Yeah...it was pretty bad........all they do is ask awkward questions about sexy French women............I mean I've seen some pretty awful interviews by Americans with Huppert and Deneuve. Like Charlie Rose, who kept saying "DeNOOOOOOOOOOOOVE." Isabelle was great in The Piano Teacher. I only watch French interviews. It should be a requirement to read Elfriede Jelinek before interviewing about the Piano Teacher.

@@cadecannon159 The Rose interview with Deneuve was an astonishing embarrassment. He outdid himself in his own narcissistic clumsiness. And Denueve shot back at him. She was gracious but held her ground. There was nothing to play along to unless she wanted to play along with Rose's inept flirting. And of course, she did not. This was just Colbert playing dumb but it was so unnecessary and she was so graciously understanding. Ironically to your comment, "Mr. Jellinek" of Strangers With Candy overplayed the "Americans are dumb" bit and we got worse because of it. It started out sort of sweet but then...ugh...I was practically waiting for him to aske her what she thought of Jerry Lewis and the Three Stooges but the audience is too young now for all that.

Why do americans always have to compare themselves with others? Isabelle Huppert can't be compared with Meryl Streep because they are two complitely different actresses. You kind of discredit the french actress comparing her. Both are very great, but in their own ways. I think that was a bit rude to start with...

You totally missed the joke. The moment he started talking about "freedom fries", you should have understood that he was trying to be funny and sarcastic. You didn't understand any of the humor or the joke he was playing. Stephen was making a joke about American arrogance, the type that mostly comes from stupid, ignorant Republicans and the conservatives that vote for them. It's the same way John Oliver makes jokes about Great Britain's past of imperialism and the same way you might hear a German make a joke about how their country was once run by Nazis. You and sweiland75 both totally missed the joke. That was humor. He wasn't making those statements literally. It's funny how everyone wants to tell Americans, "Don't take yourselves so seriously," yet you all don't know how to take American humor. Notice the part where he mentioned "freedom fries". Remember "Freedom Fries" during the start to the war in Iraq, a foolish concept initiated by conservatives and Republicans. "Freedom fries" is a dumb concept that would never be embraced by any non-conservative, such as Stephen. Stephen is an American making a joke about American arrogance, the type that mostly comes from ignorant Republicans and conservatives. Interesting how when John Oliver makes a joke about Great Britain's violent, aggressive past you can immediately tell it's a joke, but when an American does it it's something else. Learn to take a joke.

And name one good Meryl Film in the last ten years? I can't barely think of one, she won for that garbage Iron lady, the only good performances recently I think it's the year she had Prairie Home and Prada, she's terrible nowadays, only the whitest and laziest academy members go for her mediocrity, I mean, some of them ranked her over Amy Adams in Arrival. Huppert kicked ass in the 80s and in the 90s, just in 2013 she was in Amour, a best picture nominee and Palm d'or winner. This is 2017 now, Huppert just gave two of the greatest performances of her career and the female acting world in general. so yeah, Meryl wishes.

It's painful to watch that interview. It's actually Stephen's monologue. There is so many questions he could asked her, she is such intelligent woman, yet he chose to talk her ear off. He done exactly the same thing in interview with Marion Cotillard. I love Stephen, but he disappointed me.

spaceboy2095 I think she proved that she could speak well enough to exchange about other things than clichés. I love Colbert to bits, but it really wasn't a good interview. Like carogatto said, Colbert tends to fall into clichés when interviewing foreigners, instead of discussing current events. We French LOVE to debate, so it's really a shame our actors are always given questions about sophistication, food, and whatnot.
@spaceboy2095
@spaceboy2095 7 жыл бұрын
Let me rephrase it then. I think he's afraid that she won't speak English good enough for a US audience to be receptive to what she's saying. And I remember when he was interviewing Cotillard, he was speaking very very slow, and there were still things she didn't get. It was SO obvious!
@annieranai2198
@annieranai2198 7 жыл бұрын
spaceboy2095 You may be right, but then that's quite insulting to their ability. Cotillard has done many movies in English, and Hubert has even been in a British play in 1996. Even if we put that aside, you can talk about various things with limited English...
@spaceboy2095
@spaceboy2095 7 жыл бұрын
When they are acting, they know the words they have to say, but holding a conversation, especially on television is quite another thing. US audiences are very tough about accents and I think Colbert knows that or that his production team tells him that. And to have the usual level of comedy they have on such a show as Colbert's, you need a high level of English. Even Gal Gadot looks weird when she's on a talk show and she speaks quite a good English. I'm sorry but that's the way it is, and only in France would you have a subbed or dubbed interview... ;-) (I know that because I'm French... ;-) )
@KaiCarver
@KaiCarver 7 жыл бұрын
Colbert's flaw is he's happiest talking about himself and showboating. Meets fantastic, smart woman? Ignorantly spouts clichés, doesn't let her talk. Imagine 10 minutes with Meryl Streep talking at her about hamburgers and cowboys. Embarrassing.

I love Isabelle Huppert with all my heart and soul. She's such a wonderful actress, so talented and brilliant. And yeah the interview was kind of awkward but you gotta remember she's French and english is not her her primary language, she does speak it though but still struggles with it, and everybody that has followed Isabelle and her career for some time knows she is a shy person (which makes her even more adorable and endearing), so I do think Colbert what tried to do here was to keep the conversation going and not talk about "too important" stuff, so she wouldn't struggle with the language. This interview would've been way more fluent and "fun" to watch if she could just have talked in french but as that was not the case it ended it up coming off as awkward. But she did seem to have a good time, they even joked and laughed a few times. And she also looked stunning, I CAN'T BELIEVE SHE'S TURNING 64 IN MARCH THIS YEAR, LOL.

You will not disrespect Emma Stone like that, you will not refer to her as "average at best". Emma is an excellent, charismatic and beautiful young actress. Just because Isabelle was the most deserving of the Oscar doesn't mean you can disrespect Emma.

Unfortunately that stupid academy likes to give oscars for young stars (Lawrence over Riva, Brie (who?) over Rampling and now that Stone over this amazing ISABELLE HUPPERT). No sense.

I'm french, i both like Huppert et Colbert but... uhhh, this is a little bit awkward. Huppert is shy and she's not totally fluent in english so doing a late show (where you have to be funny and eloquent, in a very short time) is obviously a tough job in her position. And Colbert didn't help her :)

She is absolutely one of the best actress in the world. And Streep is so huge that it's a great compliment. I just heard that she is always looking for a new director or big challenges as an actress. Respect to that Dame. And he is very elegant. Good one.

Meryl Streep is a virtuoso of acting, no doubt, the dream of any director. But Isabelle Huppert is a brave actress and very explorative who works at the deepest level, always searching, always exploring, always trying new things with new directors.. a true artist always looking forward and within. If you compare their filmographies, I personally admire Huppert's more-because I place those style of films at a higher standard. But they're both amazing artists.
