I originally published this review back in October 2020 but everyone was hating on the music so I removed the music. BUT, in this video I unbox and get right into an in-depth review of the P30 charger from ISDT. At the time of this original publishing there was only currently only 1 other video out about this video and it doesn't cover much so, I picked one up and took a deep dive into the settings and give it the stress test. I hope you like it! Like and subscribe for more videos.

Great video, really like the call out to let your batteries balance out when parallel charging. I understand your fear about parallel charging. I had some minor issues until I calibrated each port. Highly recommend calibrating, been spot on ever since. You can quickly discharge if you using the XT90 as your source power. In system settings just adjust the lowest input voltage to what you want the storage voltage to be.
@JoshMoenheli
@JoshMoenheli 3 жыл бұрын
That's a good point. Setting the input voltage cutoff to the storage voltage is a good idea. There's no balancing done there but you could set the voltage limit 1/2-1v below your storage voltage then charge them back up to storage so they are balanced.

Too bad it doesn't have battery slot programming memory! So you can program in say up to six different LiPo battery pack configurations->3cell, 5cell, 6 cell, 2cell all with different charge current parameters with direct recall to each one individually so you don't have to constantly be reprogramming.. .

Hi and thank you for your great review, now I'm really curious und have so many questions on my mind :) 1. since the P30 can operate as a kind of bench power supply with 1-32V, is it possible to connect both outputs in series an get a powersupply with 2-64V ? 2. it does also support recycle discharge, but does it support to have the battery to discharge on ch1 and another battery for charging on ch2 and nothing connected on the input?
@JoshMoenheli

I'm glad you liked it. Shoot your questions to me and I'l do my best to answer them. #1. I wouldn't try connecting 2 of them in series as a 64v power supply. I don't know the internal circuitry of these chargers so I would not recommend it. #2. It does not support regenerative discharging functions like those found on the iChargers. Nor will it discharge from one port to another. If there is nothing plugged into the power input of the charger, it will not power on. I hope this helps.

Good day, is it possible to balance both batteries connected without a power source? Thanks Tom
@JoshMoenheli
@JoshMoenheli Жыл бұрын
No, the charger requires power to operate, regardless of the charge level of the battery. You could use a battery to power the charger if you wanted to.

Hi, you said in your intro that you were going to talk about why it doesn't deliver 30A from each channel, but then you don't mention it again. When I charge 2x 4s at 30A each simultaneously, power delivery to both batteries actually hovers around 20A x2, not actually 30A x2. I wonder why this is... Perhaps the internal voltage convert can't convert from 14V from the alternator in to 16.5V for the LiPos. Perhaps it would only work at 30A x2 if the power supply is higher voltage, e.g. your 24V. Insight would be appreciated, thanks :)

Hi @Shahzad, Sorry I didn't elaborate on it. There are a lot of factors that come into play here so I'll do my best to explain it. The P30 will output a maximum of 1500w, with the max per channel being 1000w. Theoretically what this means is if you are charging something on ch1 and it's using 1000w then you only have 500w available for use on ch2 totaling 1500w. What I said about not being able to deliver 30a per channel may not be entirely correct as I fly mostly 6s-8s packs I will never see 30a per channel, however, lets do some math and find out where that breaking point is. Using 4.2v per cell fully charged: 2s LiPo at 30a = 252w 3s LiPo at 30a = 378w 4s LiPo at 30a = 504w 5s LiPo at 30a = 630w 6s LiPo at 30a = 756w 7s LiPo at 30a = 792w 8s LiPo at 30a = 1008w If we take the 1500 watts that are available and split it in half that gives us a theoretical 750w available on each channel. This means we could charge up to a 5s pack at 30a on each channel but when you reach the voltage of a 6s pack at full charge, that ends up going just over the 750w. Now, you could charge up to 1000w on one channel so in that case you could charge a 7s pack at 30a(with some spare wattage) on one channel and then a 5s LiPo on the other channel put the total charger output around 1422w. Again this is using the voltage of 4.2v per cell which is fully charged. This all varies depending on the voltage of the battery you are charging. In your case of only getting 20a per channel is most likely because the input voltage is stopping the charger from it's full potential. Get 24v going into the charger and you''ll see different results. I hope this helps! Thank you for watching and asking questions!

@@JoshMoenheli thanks. Indeed, it turns out the charger has a max input current of 60A, which isn't well advertised. My car outputs ~12V after losses. 60A x 12V= 720W available. The charging voltage of a 8s Lipo is ~17V => 42A max charging current when charging 2x 8s Lipos. This number tallies neatly with the charge current shown, taking into account losses/efficiency. It looks like I'll have to satisfy myself with this figure, unless I want to spend big money on a high current voltage inverter for my car to up-convert the voltage. 🙂

Hi can we charge 30 amp on 2 channel at same time. As well how big of power supply is needed to accomplish
@JoshMoenheli
@JoshMoenheli 2 жыл бұрын
This is a complicated answer. If you read the specs closely, they state that you can charge 30a per port but at a max of 1000w and only 1500w as a total meaning you'd only be able to charge an additional 500w on the other port. Now that said, that is still a whole lot of power! So yes you can but it is totally dependent on the battery capacity and cell count. In theory, if you had three 5000mah 5 cell lipos in parallel on one channel you could charge at 2c which would be 30a and that would around 630 watts total. With this setup, you'd be able to charge 30a on each channel because your total wattage is 630 watts on the port and still under the 1000 watt maximum allowed on the port. You are also still under the 1500 watt maximum of the charger since you are using 1,230 watts total. If you were to charge three 6s lipos in parallel on each port at 3c the charger would top out at 30a on one port and about 28-29a on the other port. A 6s pack at 30a is around 756 watts which leaves you about 744w of wattage to use on the second port. As far as a power supply is concerned, that will also depend greatly on how much wattage you anticipate needing and adding 20-25% as a buffer.(If you plan on using 1500w I'd get a 2000w power supply.) I hope this helps.

Does the input voltage need to be higher than the output voltage or will the charger step it up on its own? Looking to charge a 4s lipo4 battery at ~14.6V (3.65v/cell) using a 1000W 12v power supply.

The charger will step up the voltage if needed. Charging a 4, 5 or 6s pack from a 12v source works just fine the charger just works a little harder.

@@alexsunfinishedprojects yes it could but it will take a while seeing as the 8s voltage is more than double the 12v that the charger input has. It will work it’s just not as efficient as the charger has to boost the voltage internally.

@@alexsunfinishedprojectsIt could do 40,00V, like a taser or bug zapper, it just ramps up the voltage - but not the amperage limit of the power supply. You cannot power a tesla with just a taser. So let's say, to try to conceptualize this, you have a power supply that can pump out 10A while holding 12.6V, and a charger that can output at up to 38V while you could charge a 2S 7.4V at the full 10A (but bucked down to the battery's lower voltage, only able to give it 74W not 120W), or a 3S, once you go 4, 6, 8 cells, while the power supply may be feeding the charger the full 10A at 12V, which is 120W, when the charger boosts that to 36V, while it is still feeding (almost) 120W into the battery, the resulting amperage your charger would read would be whatever 120 divided by 36 is, minus a little overhead, about 3A. If the 8S battery in question were the same weight as the 3S, it would charge either at roughly the same speed, but of course 8S packs tend to be pretty damn big. My advice regardless of whatever charger you have and whatever you currently fly or drive presently, give yourself options and go heavy on the power supply. I'm about to buy a 36V 65A, which is three 12V computer server power supplies wired in series, which at full blast would pump out about 2250W, which happens to be the max of a high performance giant I fly, and also close to the limit of a common household circuit fuse, 20A/120V, which is 2400W. I could remove one or two of the three units to drop down to 24V or 12V to help jump a truck or car perhaps, power a plane I am testing without batteries, and of course charge all my packs at the same time in parallel. Not bad for $135, or $100 for the 24V unit, by far the best deal I've found and I've relied on these things forever from this company, search Lipo Connect Solutions.
