I remember when Gear Fourth got revealed in the manga. One chapter ended on the same cliffhanger as the first episode from this video. Then we had to wait an extra week because the chapter timed itself to right before either a holiday break or one of the regular two week breaks.

I think the best way to describe the effect of the Muscle Ballon, is that Luffy's body can be considered natural, raw Rubber, that can stretch and be molded into most any shape. The Hardening is then like said rubber Curring or setting into a shape, which is then blown up, needing more air but under a considerably higher pressure than in Gear 3. Lastly, rubber that has set into shape, can be strethed, but will always try to return to it's orignal form or snap apart, the latter of which won't happen, because of the hardening. Now, put all that together, just for the Kong Gun, pulling it into his own arm, while under the higher air pressure in the Muscle Ballon, is a crazy amount of force being released upon impact. Now beyond this, the "science" of the gears goes out the window, but I love this setup, cause it's crazy to even imagine the power behind it.

The bigger one bounces high because of the weightlessness of air along with the bounciness of rubber. The smaller ball bounces just as high but it’s all due to the properties of the rubber. There is a video of someone loading a wheel for a 16-wheeler truck onto a flatbed, the guy bounces the wheel until it manages to go higher than the bed of the truck and moves it over to load it. Those wheels are thick and heavy which brings me to the point of this comment, at his default form, Luffy is like the big red rubber ball, in Gear 4 he hardens his skin and instead of inflating his bones which he does in Gear 3, he inflates his muscles/skin making it denser and thicker. Goes from a rubber ball to a wheel for a dump truck and trust me, you would rather get hit in the face with a rubber ball than a dump truck wheel going at Mach 3 speed

I think the idea of gear fourth is that instead of pumping his bones (gear 3), he pumps his muscles. Also he adds armament that compresses it. Its like when you compress a spring. Like Bellamy. But I think he can control his compression with the armament. Thats why python can go so far. He squeezes every last bit. And also sometimes he hardens to block and sometimes he leaves it bouncy. Orrr Im thinking too much into it, and the reveal after 300 episodes explains everything. It may be impossible to have such precise and fine control over your armament. Or maybe you cant squeeze yourself with it. Luffy may think thats whats happening, but its actually not that at all. Dunno.

I heard a good explanation about the difference between Gear 3 & 4. (Not official manga extracts or anything, it was a good analogy) Gear 3 is when he inflates his arm/bone and then he can put Armament Haki on it, so it’s like a reinforced balloon. It’s powerful because of it’s size but doesn’t have force behind it. Gear 4, on the other hand, is when he uses Armament Haki first and then inflates his muscles, so it’s as if the air is trapped inside similar to a pressurised air filled tyre. When he compresses it further when using his attacks, it’s got to be hundreds of times more powerful in comparison. Great reaction. Keep up the good work!

btw, just a quick note (not a spoiler): Luffy’s pose and the way he says "gear fourth" are inspired by kabuki theater. Kabuki is a traditional Japanese theater form that dates back to the Edo period. I think Luffy might've been influenced by the "traditional style" of characters like Momo and Kin’emon. Kanjuro also resembles a kabuki theater character, even though Luffy didn't meet him yet.

I was also thinking of Nightmare Luffy from ThrillerBark when I saw Fourth Gear for the first time. I also noticed that Luffy's voice sounds more rougher and darker in this form.

Luffy has red and black skin, reflecting both, his armament Haki (black) with his rubber nature (red).
