Muslims are a minority in Nepal. There are at least 2.5 million followers of Islam in Nepal or around 10 percent of the country's population.
Broadly speaking, Nepalese Muslims are divided into four major ethnicities, namely Muslims from India, Kashmiris, Tibetans, and native Nepalese Muslims who previously converted from Hinduism to Islam. There are also Muslim Nepalese mountains. Everyday they live in mountainous areas.
Conditions for Muslims in Nepal improved in 1990, when the country's political transformation occurred from a Hindu monarchy system to a multiparty democratic system. At that time, a law was issued that guaranteed equality without discrimination of religion, race, gender, caste, ethnicity or ideology.
With this law, centuries of Hindu superiority in the country were erased. As a result, 31 Muslim leaders were able to participate in Nepal's political scene for the first time.
