I wished I'd learn about Islam before I commited all the sins then I would have less regrets in my life. I slowly started to practice Islam praying 5 times a day, fasting, giving charity, etc. moving on when I was around 10 or 11 years of age I realised I am attracted to boys but homosexuality is a sin in Islam. I had an honest inner dialogue with myself about my feelings. remember I have understood this fact that if I do something which Allah has prohibited I'm going to regret it. trust me that feeling of regret I hated it to my very core. Allah gave humans natural sexual desire for opposite sex and we can only fulfil that desire with our spouse after marriage in Islam. Allah will not give me homosexual feelings and then punish me for acting upon them. at that young age I realised these feelings are not from Allah as Allah is just. inner dialogue: this is my conviction this is my belief that nobody is born gay. I have submitted my will to the will of my creator and homosexuality is a sin in my religion. I will not be a homosexual I am a Muslim. I will not follow desires but I will obey Allah and his messanger Muhammad pbuh. I have chosen my path and my path is Islam. after this inner dialogue with myself I asked Allah sincerely about my situation and asked Allah to help me resolve these feelings. I prayed tahajjud asked Allah sincerely that Allah Is ar rahman ar raheem I don't know what went wrong how did I get these feelings ya Allah remove these homosexual feelings from me. ameen I prayed 5 times a day held tightly onto Qur'an. I did few things subconsciously Subhan allah when I look back I realise they were very beneficial Allah would not give me homsexual feelings and then punish me for acting on them. I put my Complete trust and tawakul in Allah. 100% of my being believed that I was not born gay and these feelings are not natural. Maybe you are correct, majority of Muslims know that homosexuality is haram so you have muslims that don't even think about it any other way, homosexuality is not spoken about in muslims households and again is not a topic that you would talk about. So when a person asks about it most muslims try and change the subject or say its haraam n move on from it without hurting someone's feelings cz of course ppl have homosexuality tendencies and relationships.

Paul is a Muslim, may Allah preserve him, I wouldn't compare him to Declan. Declan's a liberal Catholic academic who, quoting from his website, "is the bronze winner of the 2017 Independent Publisher Book Award in the LGBT non-fiction list for his book Trans Voices - Becoming Who You Are."... However, I believe in the capacity for people to change; Declan shows some level of open-mindedness in being able to sit down and have this discussion. One hopes what the Shaykh said resonates with him and he explores and embraces the Din.

Personally, I am trying more recently to assume the best until assumption is no longer possible. I find I am quite a negative and skeptical person, so like you would probably intimate such thoughts. But, I think it is also possible for people to change, and to allow for that we must on our part believe they can change. When arguing with people it is tempting to debate them into a corner. But like fighting an army and doing the same, this may only make them more beligerent in staying their current position and 'fighting to the last man'. Like the Chinese tactician, Sun Tzu, suggests, one must leave an opening. In reality, I am sure we both agree that we would not want the interviewer to be doing such a thing, and we wish for him to be honest and also to accept Islam. I hope that the Shaykh's words urge change in his heart.

@veiled.monotheist I speak English and Arabic. Sheikh is an arabic word. Although there isn't a perfect way of saying it in English that matches the phonetic notes required in arabic, its easy to see that shake is far closer to the arabic word sheikh than sheek is. Sheek is way off. Sheek is wrong. Shake is close. Tbh the only thing missing is the 'kh' sound in 'shake'. In sheek however, the ee sound is flat out wrong and the Kh sound is wrong so there is more wrong with that word.

@veiled.monotheist shake is so close to the word sheikh infact that an English person could go to the arab world and use this term and people would be able to guess the word they are trying to say. Sheek on the other hand would just cause confusion.

The reason I'm being picky in this is because I have lived in England my whole life and I often hear English people say things in a way that's just way off becuase they're trying to sound right but they do more damage becuase they can use the phonetic sounds in their ability to sound pretty close to the arabic word itself. I am not sure what your point is here? Yes people will continue to perform evil. These aren't loopholes in Sharia, the practice of Bacha Bazi is absolutely forbidden, in fact the Prophet Alayhis Salam explicitly spoke on that very subject (young boys). It is, I think, a bizarre cultural loophole, similar to the Pakistani practice of Hijra transgenders etc. Again, Sharia has clear views on these. That people continue to practice them is another matter. As for historical evil, sure this always existed, especially in private, and as you imply in the upper echelons. Of course with reports of rulers/politicians being involved in such, one has to bear in mind polemical sources and that many of these come from political opposition or people who hated these rulers for other things they did. But were some of them commiting such evil? It is not difficult to imagine they were. The rulers had to many times be corrected by the pious, and we have the likes of Yazid in history after all. Finally, regarding your last comment regarding Imam Yahya bin Athkham, this is slander, there is no actual evidence he commited such things, and the claim is routed in the political-theological happenings of the time such as the state Mu'tazilism under the corrupt Abbasid Caliph at the time, amongst other groups. We look to the Prophet Alayhis Salam and Prophets Alayhim Salam and then the Sahabah Radiyallahu Anhu. We cannot however rely on history thereafter, history is not perfect as Muslims are not perfect. But for all the evils of history there are good examples as well. For every Yazid, there is an Umar bin Abdul Aziz too.

You’ve gone awry after making some sense, but there is a great deal of nonsense in what you wrote too a lot of it not worth addressing, but I’ll say this: morality does not evolve in the final revelatory dispensation, therefore homosexual acts are immoral and prohibited and will remain so until the end of time. The abuse of an institution and tyrannising the weak do not necessarily mean the institution itself is immoral per se. In the case of slavery there were prescriptions for how a slave was to be treated, these were obligations as the shaykh mentioned and the slave could seek legal redress against his master where his rights we trammelled, this last is something that did not pertain in western slavery. Your visceral loathing of slavery is purely down to your being born in the present age and after the abomination of the Atlantic slave trade, you’re then transposing that on to all historical instances of slavery.

This is incorrect and contradicts Islamic law. "People becoming known for it" is never, and I mean EVER, appropriate justification/evidence for implementation of the hadd punishment for liwat. Even someone talking about it in a Muslim country might warrant ta'zir punishment like whipping but NOT hadd. The person should also be given a chance to say he was mistaken in his speech and that would be the end of it. I don't care what your "eastern" interpretation of Islamic law says. The law doesn't change based on your desires

@hassanabdaladl I know that capital punishment applies only when there's 4 witnesses. But Ta'zir will be applied in the cases where there's a strong, but not enough, evidence that the person is practicing homosexuality acts. It's not correct to say that penal laws only apply on public display cases. It is like saying that there will be no criminal case if a woman gets pregnant while single because we don't have 4 witnesses. Like any other criminal cases, if someone is known to practice homosexuality acts, he or she will be under surveillance by authorities until they capture him.

We hold no antithetical theological position on "gay bornedness". All things are by decree. There is no natural causation. If Allah decreed someone to feel these feelings, then they are still responsible for not sinning. Being "born with a desire", whatever that means, is not a get-out-of-jail free card for sinning, I was "born with a desire" for women and yet you don't see me sleeping around, though I certainly have such a desire to do so. May Allah preserve you.
