Funny how some people still don't know much about Islam..like I'm a Muslim but I know many religion, I know how they pray, how they life style is, etc. But I just know enough to respect them(it's not like I follow them when their were praying or else) it's like how my Christian friends respect me when I was fasting during Ramadan & I respect them to do whatever their religion told. 🤗 I was blessed having such a great friends like that.. Ugly but useful: The sheep blowfly is one of the fly species that might provide humans with new antibiotics. The surface of flies is the last place you would expect to find antibiotics, yet that is exactly where a team of Australian researchers is concentrating their efforts. Working on the theory that flies must have remarkable antimicrobial defences to survive rotting dung, meat and fruit, the team at the Department of Biological Sciences , Macquarie University, set out to identify those antibacterial properties manifesting at different stages of a fly's development. "Our research is a small part of a global research effort for new antibiotics, but we are looking where we believe no-one has looked before," said Ms Joanne Clarke, who presented the group's findings at the Australian Society for Microbiology Conference in Melbourne this week. The project is part of her PhD thesis. The scientists tested four different species of fly: a house fly, a sheep blowfly, a vinegar fruit fly and the control, a Queensland fruit fly which lays its eggs in fresh fruit. These larvae do not need as much antibacterial compound because they do not come into contact with as much bacteria. Flies go through the life stages of larvae and pupae before becoming adults. In the pupae stage, the fly is encased in a protective casing and does not feed. "We predicted they would not produce many antibiotics," said Ms Clarke. They did not. However the larvae all showed antibacterial properties (except that of the Queensland fruit fly control). As did all the adult fly species, including the Queensland fruit fly (which at this point requires antibacterial protection because it has contact with other flies and is mobile). Such properties were present on the fly surface in all four species, although antibacterial properties occur in the gut as well. "You find activity in both places," said Ms Clarke. "The reason we concentrated on the surface is because it is a simpler extraction." The antibiotic material is extracted by drowning the flies in ethanol, then running the mixture through a filter to obtain the crude extract. When this was placed in a solution with various bacteria including E.coli, Golden Staph, Candida (a yeast) and a common hospital pathogen, antibiotic action was observed every time. "We are now trying to identify the specific antibacterial compounds," said Ms Clarke. Ultimately these will be chemically synthesised. Because the compounds are not from bacteria, any genes conferring resistance to them may not be as easily transferred into pathogens. For example, wound contamination with Clostridium welchii - leading to 'gas gangrene' - was a frequent cause of death amongst battlefield casualties. It is from such situations that early observations were made on the beneficial effect of some blowfly larvae in limiting the bacterial infection of wounds. Indeed, some military surgeons would deliberately infest wounds with blowfly maggots in order to prevent bacterial complications. Now, a century or two later, the search for new antibiotics had led researchers back to these early observations, and in this article, Gory Erdmann describes progress in understanding the antibacterial action of blowfly maggots. Prophet Muhummed (sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallaam) said: “If a housefly falls in the drink of anyone of you, he should dip it (in the drink), for one of its wings has a disease and the other has the cure for the disease.” (Al-Bukhari) Also, Ibn Maj’ah narrated that the Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallaam) said: “One of the fly’s wings carries poison while the other carries antidote. When it falls in the food, dip it, for the sake of Allah, for verily He (Allah) makes the poison (take effect) first and He makes the cure come last.” This Hadith contains two areas of interest, Fiqh (Islamic Jurisprudence) and medicinal. As for the Fiqh part, the Hadith states that when a fly falls in water or fluids, it does not make it impure, according to the majority of the scholars. None among the early generations contradicted this ruling. The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallaam) ordered the fly that falls on the food be dipped in it, thus killing the fly, especially if the food is hot. If the fly’s death inside the food would make the food impure, the Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallaam) would have ordered us to discard the food. On the contrary, the Prophet sought to salvage the food. As for the medicinal value contained in the Hadith, Abu ‘Ubaidah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the purpose behind dipping the fly (in the drink) is to extract the antidote from (its other wing) just as the poison was extracted from (the wing that fell on the food). Houseflies carry poisonous materials as evidenced by the effect of their bite, such as rash and infection, and this poison is the fly’s weapon of defense. When the fly falls into what harms it, it tries to defend itself with the available weapons. The Prophet (sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallaam) ordered that we neutralize the poisonous substances produced by the fly with the antidote that Allah has kept on its other wing. The fly should then be submerged in the water or the food so that the antidote could neutralize the effect of the poison. This is a remedy that the best medical minds would never be able to discover on their own, because it is coming from Prophetic knowledge. The doctors who have good knowledge and comprehension submit to this Prophetic remedy and admit that he who was sent with it, is indeed the perfect human being who is supported by divine revelation that is beyond human power. I think the reason for the confusion is because Saudi Arabia banned women from driving for quite a while. The reason they used was that women would drive to nightclubs and do haram things. The ruling was stupid imo since the Prophet (PBUH) never forbade women from riding camels or horses.

@Habib Bhai That's true. My issue is just that it seems to me that the sunnah clearly goes against that ruling. It's one thing if non-Muslims blame us for an aspect that's a part of our religion, but it's even sadder when we're blamed for a ruling that shouldn't be a part of the religion in the first place. And most of the reasoning I've seen from the ban on car driving for women is simply conservative opinions and no real proof.
