There are places where, on arrival, we feel pleasantly 'out of this world', or, at least, in a way apart, where everything we are used to dealing with is but a distant echo. One such place is Famara. Here @Story Hunters Tv meets the very likeable Alessandro. He is a surf teacher and an active volcano on an island that has more than 300 extinct ones.
The cliff you will see behind Alessandro and Barbara are the remains of a caldera about ten kilometres in diameter, dating back to the Miocene, which means it is about twenty thousand years old. The images of the sea are mainly those of Famara beach. As well as 5 kilometres of beach which, thanks to the constant waves and winds, is a paradise for surfers.
Alessandro's friendly exuberance will take you along the path of his life experience, linked to the sea and travel, and also along the cultural paths of the island of Lanzarote, the one where he has chosen to live and raise his children. Alessandro's love for this Canary Island is linked to the very reasons for his changing life. First of all, following his passion for surfing, which has taken him around the seas of the world. Then, the day he decided to go and visit in Lanzarote the girl who was his wife and is the mother of his children, what, ten years ago, was supposed to be a holiday became his home. Alessandro's words reflect his respect and curiosity for the local places and people he encounters along the way; this, we always repeat, is the frame of mind with which we must face every change and every person or situation that comes our way: only in this way can we surf new waves. This is what Alessandro seems to be telling us.
An entertaining interview, full of useful content, both as a life story and as a guide to the particular beauty of this island, so essential and, for this very reason, so full of suggestions capable of putting us in harmony with our deepest feelings. Passing through Lanzarote does not leave one indifferent, and it is an island that deserves much more than a brief visit, I would say it is an ideal place for a long retreat, during which one can have the opportunity to formulate numerous questions about our life and the way we are leading it.
Alessandro dedicates particular admiration and gratitude to a central figure in the recent history of the island of Lanzarote. The multifaceted artist César Manrique, whose creative, human and political work promoted a model of intervention in the territory in a sustainable way, aimed at protecting the island's natural and cultural heritage. He was born in Arrecife in 1919. He died in Teguise on 25 September 1992, at the age of 73, in a car accident that still leaves many doubts open. What is certain is that the figure of Manrique was seen as smoke in the eyes of all the tycoons of building speculation who would have liked to get their hands on the island to do the tourist cementing that has been done on many parts of the Canary Islands and the Spanish coast from Alicante to Malaga. All his conservation work was decisive in Lanzarote being declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1993. In order to protect his beloved territory, laying the foundations of modern installation works, Manrique had developed a new aesthetic thought, called Art-Nature/Nature-Art, a concept of total art, which has set the world on fire, in which painting, sculpture, murals and architecture are inserted into selected spaces of nature, to whose character they adapt thanks to the artist's intervention. Alessandro mentions some of these works that the visitor to Lanzarote encounters on his tour and is captivated by the simple beauty with which they express the beauty of the island. Some unmissable examples are Jameos del Agua, his house in Tahiche', seat of the César Manrique Foundation, the Mirador del Rio, Jardín de Cactús.
Alessandro's lightness made us think of another theme close to our hearts, that of simplifying life. Understanding what we really need and giving up the others. This applies as much to material things as to spiritual ones. Only by letting go or throwing away ballast will we be able to get up. If we can commit ourselves to something that fulfils our life, that is, that makes us live authentically, what we need are the few things that are indispensable to us.
