Love this beautiful island. So pleased to see people who know their roots, returning and seeing all the places they probably heard of so many times. Hope you enjoyed your trip.

For what it's worth, archaeologists residing on Lewis have pretty much demonstrated that the Calanais stones measure the 19.5-year cycle of the moon. Every 19.5 years, for three full moons in a row, the full moon will appear centered in the notch in the hills pointed to by the main avenue of the stones.

I enjoyed your video. Brings back great memories. Two of my sisters and I visited three years ago. There was only one MacDermid left in the area that my ancestors came from. We want to go back for another visit. I do have a MacLeod from Harris as a great, great, great grandmother though.

I liked your enthusiasm....but, please,.... the old houses are BLACKhouses, not BLOCKhouses :) What a great pilgrimage you made, and you really did enjoy it didn't you :) Awesome. My good friend from Australia made a similar journey 4 years ago, and we found the space where his G G G grandfather had lived before leaving for south Australia. It's very moving.

I love the Isle of Lewis accent, it is so calming, I had a couple of Lewis girlfriends in my youth & their accent is absolutely adorable. However Andrew, I wouldnae thank you for their peaty whisky, give me a Singleton of Speyside any day. Marvellous video Andrew, many thanks. By the way, it's pronounced Galik in Scotia.

a very enjoyable video. Being a Scot who owns a kilt (Ferguson) I just have to mention that many tartans date from Victorian times so I don't think it matters which one you choose. I will be going to Lewis & Harris next year in my camper van.

As far as I’m aware, the Scots fought off the Vikings and therefore never paid them “protection” money, apart from settlements on the islands, the mainland kept the Vikings out. The romans never reached the islands “hadrians” wall being built to keep the Scots/Picts at bay, Antonines wall was the furthest the romans ever got but were beaten back rather quickly.
@alicemilne1444
@alicemilne1444 Жыл бұрын
The Vikings did settle in Caithness and a small part of Sutherland. The name Sutherland is actually Norse. It means the "southern land" as seen from Orkney, but they were either driven out or had assimilated with the locals by around the 12th century. The Romans did advance further than Antonine's wall because there are a string of fortlets along the Highland fault line north of the Ochils and stretching up into Angus. Those forts were built during the first Roman invasion of Caledonia around 80 AD. They were reused a couple of hundred years later when Septimus Severus decided to invade Caledonia again around 208 AD. That was a pretty harsh invasion where the Romans tried to commit genocide on the Picts, but fortunately Severus fell ill, retired back down to York and died there. His son was supposed to carry on with the genocide, but then got word that there was unrest in other parts of the empire and returned to Rome. That gave the Picts time to "regenerate". A hundred years later they were raiding down south beyond Hadrian's wall.

That is your democratic right of course. It is just such a shame that he diminished the US and empowered China as we can no longer rely on the US to be the beacon for democracy. His failure to accept the election result has empowered dictators and made your country a laughing stock - which is sad.

@@Derbyabc I agree. He lost the election. That is the truth. The US is diminished in foreign eyes both because of his presidency and the way he handled the loss. That is also the truth. And China, whose economy has grown 7% in the last year alone, has been the winner from Trump's presidency. That is also the truth. I agree. Search for the truth.

We on the Isle of Skye used to kick the shit out of any Lewisach or Herrach that used to venture near our dance hall in Portree at a weekend....and I mean really kick their arse holes more than we would an English man....we used to feel a little bit sorry for the English as they resorted to their art of CRYING when the pain got too much.

John H. Your ancestors that come from these barren wind and rain swept islands woke up one morning after weeks of non stop pissing rain and wind and said "FUCK THIS...I AM NOT LIVING ON THESE SHIT ISLANDS ANYMORE" so they all pissed off to another country....but as these Islanders brains were pretty well damaged due to loneliness, boredom and of course the weather they did,nt know any better which is why they ended up in Canada..its a bit of "OUT OF THE FRYING PAN AND INTO THE FIRE" ....where most of the year is windswept with rain and wind, snow and freezing cold conditions....and now you lot think that you have the right to down talk the USA President DJ Trump?? Go and talk down your own Arse Hole P.M. of Canada first before insulting other countries. If you really love these Islands as you say you do (Liar) then you would have stayed on them or at least returned and advanced them for the remaining residents and put the Islands on the maps of progress...and not just buying a tourists scarf.
