Welcome to the Isle of Trains, where you are the conductor, and constructor of one of the island’s locomotives. You’ll build trains and load a range of goods to complete contracts across the island, and also deliver passengers to their destinations.
Isle of Trains: All Aboard is a card-based engine building game where cards have multiple uses: You can use cards as locomotives, freight cars, passenger cars, or buildings to improve the effectiveness and abilities of your train. Cards can also be spent to pay for the construction of your new train cars and buildings, or you can use your cards as cargo and load them onto available freight cars.
You will also have a range of passengers who want to be taken to different destinations. You will draw these passengers at random from a bag when you build passenger cars and certain locomotives. You can then load passengers into any available passenger car. When passengers are delivered to their destinations, they will give you an instant powerful bonus!
Loading cargo and passengers into opponents’ trains is important on the Isle of Trains as it’ll also gain you extra bonuses that turn! But this will help the other train conductors get a little closer to completing their goals, by giving them the cargo or passengers, which they can then use for deliveries and big end game points!
The game ends when a certain number of contracts have been completed, or a certain number of passengers are delivered. You win by scoring the most points, which you earn by building up your train, completing contracts, and delivering passengers.
Isle of Trains: All Aboard is all about balancing the need to upgrade your train, with loading cargo or passengers onto opponent’s train for big bonuses, and delivering cargo and passengers to their destinations before anyone else. Build your engine effectively enough to be remembered as the greatest train conductor on the Isle of Trains!

5.0 - My absolutely favorite games. You can pry them out of my cold dead hands.
4.5 - Love this game! At the same time missing something that would make it a 5. Could be hard to table, lacking variability, a little light, etc.
4.0 - Really great game, almost always keeping, although has meaningful complaints as to what takes away from the experience.
3.5 - Really enjoyed, don't love it, may lose out to better games but the idea of never playing again is a bit sad.
3.0 - A good game, would play and suggest with the right people, if I never played it again wouldn't lose any sleep.
2.5 - A game I'd play again , but will never suggest it myself
2.0 - A game I don't want to play again
1.5 - A game I can't find any reason to recommend
1.0 - A game that is just bad.

Thank you Alex. It looks like a fun little game. Nice mechanics.

Discarding cards as currency is a cool mechanic and I really like that decision in race for the galaxy. I feel like the cards in Race for the galaxy are easier to make quick decisions on whether they fit with your strategy or not given that they aren't as multi-use. However in Isle of Trains it appears that the cards can be used in a number of different ways so choosing what to keep/discard could be an engaging decision but also an AP inducing one. I would probably play this primarily solo, but right now I have a ton of games coming that might fill a similar time slot/size in my collection. I might pick this up later if I back a future Dranda games product.

Yep, it's a good game but you kind of have to let go of making optimal decisions.

Thanks for this. I backed it because I like trains and train games, but I just cancelled my pledge now. No knock on the game, but I see now that this won't work for me and my group.

Hi Alex So if I understand you rate this game (3.5) the same rating as for example (they are so many more) Septima from MindClash games !!!? Is this logic for you ? Don't you honestly think that the scale (1 to 5) you've been using since so many months or years (knowing that you never use 1 or 2 rating as far as I remember) is completely not tailored to fit all the richness and subtilty of all those games ? Isn't it time to move to another scale ? maybe going from 1 to 20 (or else) would be much more fair with your quotation, with manufacturers, and with the way you can express a real and fine evaluation of a game ? Another example: in your last ranking 146 to 1 games, you put many 4.5 rated games less good than some 3.5 games ? I mean what is the logic of your evaluation? I don't understand. Anyway thanks for your work.

I prefer less ranking than more. A 20 point scale is way more than I need. I rate based on desire to play in general.

I like having a final rating score but it is hardly the be all and end all. It is a quick way to see how the game aligns with Alex's tastes but that's really it. I think Alex provides plenty of information throughout the review itself that allows a viewer to understand his evaluation. The Dice Tower doubles the amount of ranking scores in their reviews and you still get the same issue. There are good 7 out of 10s and bad 7 out of 10s but I won't know that unless I actually listen to the review.
