Mike Hailwood's Isle of Man TT comeback in 1978

The glorious return of one of motorcycle racing’s biggest names to the Isle of Man TT is the stuff of legend and still one of the most talked about events at the fabled road race more than four decades on.
In 1978, multiple World Champion Mike Hailwood returned to the iconic 37.73-mile TT course, after a self-imposed 11 year absence from the world famous circuit. Few doubted Hailwood still possessed the legendary skill which had brought him 12 TT wins, but a comeback at 38, after more than a decade away, was still a daunting prospect.
With a fine handling, but under-powered Ducati V-Twin at his disposal, Mike the Bike went head-to-head with fellow great Phil Read, riding the much faster 4 cylinder Honda in the opening race of the TT festival. Amazingly, Hailwood roared to victory in the Formula One race!

I'm 51. I never saw Mike race. But if you've ridden or raced, his achievements are not lost on you. I came across this clip as I was explaining what an extraordinary man he was to my partner. I'm delighted that your comment shows that his grace and humility has been carried forward through the family name. What an absolutely magical man.

I have said this before but I'll say it again. He wa my all time hero and when I got the chance to get my book signed I was so in awe of him I couldn't speak. Sadly his last accident was on my birthday, a day I'll never forget. He really was a legend.

I watched an interview with Jamie Whitham. He spoke about going to IOM with his dad for Mike's return. He managed to convey the pressure and the emotion of the crowd (and his dad!) desperate for Mike to do well. It sent me looking up the reality of Mikes career, his epic achievements and how many people say such great things. Being a 'top bloke' in motorcycle racing says so much more than in a normal profession. I loved this video, I wish we had many more on Mike and his generation but the more you read the more you realise how great Mike was.

I was 19 when I met him at the Motorcycle show in Belfast in 1978, I asked him would he sign 2 photographs for me I had at home, he sent me home for them and made sure he got me back into the show for free. What a gentleman and arguably the greatest motorcycle racer ever.

*I well remember the Race of the Year at Mallory Park September 1964, and long after the race had finished and the crowds had gone, asking a Marshall if I could drive my car (Citroen DS19) around the circuit, he said better ask Mike (Hailwood) and directed me to him. I asked Mike, who I had briefly met a number of times before, and he said of course you can, and told the Marshall to let me through the top gate (Near Hairpin) - He said come back after we are having a bit of a Party with Chris Barber later. Did two/three laps and then went back. Mike appeared genuinely pleased to see me again and asked how I got on. Had a good laugh together as we found had a lot of common interests (3 years older than me and born on the same date 2nd April) and had been to the Belgian Grand Prix the previous year in my Morris Minor 1000. Stayed until late with many of the riders and "Chris Barber & his Jazzmen" playing. Imagine that today, the pits were open and you didn't need a fancy pass to get in. I was very keen on Jazz Bands, and in fact had an Acker Bilk Beard at the time, and was often mistaken for him ! (Maybe Mike thought I was "Acker") Still got the Program Price 2/6p and signed by many riders then including Phil Read, Jim Redman, Mike Duff, Bill Ivy etc Incidentally Mike Won the race on the MV Agusta and was £1000 richer. Huge amount in those days. So no wonder he was happy. He held the 350cc Lap Record from 62-64 at 84.93 mph and the 500cc Lap record at 53 seconds 91.70 mph in 1962 !*

It would have been an immensely popular win because everyone revered him. I saw him at Brands Hatch around 1967 or ‘68 at the Race of the South on his Honda 6 when he beat Agostini. We saw him giving the ACU officials heaps in the paddock over something or other, he certainly didn’t like backing down.

I was there and at the post TT at Mallory. The likes of riders such as Hailwood and Agoustini can't be underestimated. With multi class wins at GPs and on the IOM they were the best of the best but for mike to come back after 11 years previously riding on drum brakes and cross ply tyres to smash the technology of the 1978 Ducati says it all. A great would be great in any era and against any opposition, it's the man not the machine and Mike was the man!

I remember this! My dad spoke non-stop of _Mike the Bike_ . Of course at that time, I'd only been to a handful of races with the biggest stars at the time I had seen being Gregg Hansford and Graeme Crosby, and had no idea as to the feat of Mikes accomplishment. Fast forward half a dozen years or so, and both dad and I were shocked to learn of his death.... At this point I started riding my first motorcycle and started my infatuation with the Isle....

lol.. my 5 mins of fame. We were drinking at the pub in parliament square that day and watching from the car park. We were doing roughly a pint a lap (young man) the laps were about 20 mins long back then and there were 6 of them ! On his last lap we were very drunk and very happy and we made a lot of noise lol.. I remember him mentioning it in MCN and thinking yeah, that was us :). Interesting addenda. After the TT Mallory park use to host a race called the post TT (don't know if they still do). We met my girlfriends parents there on the way back to London. They were friends of Barry Ditchburn, the works Kawasaki rider. At the time he was considered the "King of Lean" having been recorded regularly cranked over up to 50 degrees (What is Marc Márquez up to now, 64 degrees lol) I remember him commenting following a rider who he didn't know into Gerrards the very long right hander at the the end of the start finish straight. He said the bloke looked slow because of his upright riding position and he kinda took his eye of the ball and followed him in with an overtake in mind and nearly wiped out big time. Back in the paddock he realised his mistake, it was Mike Hailwood !

I saw him on The Island and Oulton Park. He was and still is the GOAT. Never mind Ago being this or that. Ago was racing with no real opposition. Every time Ago came up against Hailwood he was second best. I've seen Read on the IOM and in the paddock at various tracks. He was quick but same as Ago never really had Mike The Bike to contend with after Mike's death. Hailwood was a gentleman of the sport. Read was arrogant, unapproachable and condescending. This is great isnt it, he first reaction, without hesitation is to go and save that guy. Taking time to struggle with that seat belt in a fire, catching fire. The heat must have been intense. It’s too hot holding your hand above a glowing bbq never mind being IN the flames. What a great act of human bravery caught on film.
