On our final full day of our Isles of Scilly holiday, for the final time we use the St Mary's Boatmen's Association to be transported across to Bryher Island to spend the morning walking part of the island with Will Wagstaff on one of his Isles of Scilly wildlife tours. We visited the Isles of Scilly in spring so the flora and fauna is indicative of this time of year. It is argued by some that Bryher has some of the best Isles of Scilly beaches and after the tour, we headed across to Rushy Bay Bryher for lunch, chilling out, wild swimming on the Isles of Scilly and some drone flying too.

A huge thank you to Will Wagstaff for allowing me to share snippets of his tour. What I've shown in this video is a tiny part of what we got to experience. If you plan on visiting the Isles of Scilly, I'd highly recommend doing a tour with Will. He prefers for people to just turn up at the quay on the day and you'll find out what days and times he's running tours during your own visit by checking the blackboards on the Quay!

When I was 20 I moved from the Inner city tower blocks on the edge of Salford city and Manchester City border to the beautiful island of Bryher in early 2006. Spent nearly two years working as a chef in the kitchen of Hell Bay Hotel. Best years of my life. The most amazing people already working there and true Islanders welcomed me with open arms. Weather can be savage through the winter but it adds to the beauty of the place

All of the islands are beautiful, but if pushed I'd have to say that Bryher is my favourite. You can comfortably walk round the coast path in a morning, and spend the afternoon until the boat turns up revisiting some of the lovely spots. Thanks again Caroline

Hi David, so pleased they're able to do that. I've moved onto editing videos for my next series, but these are really sunny too so thinking about it - it does make me feel warmer!

Will seemed like a cool guy, you can tell he loved telling you about the island and he clearly knows his stuff. I thought you were going to say the water was nice and warm, it surprised me when you said it was freezing cold haha. I guess things are still warming up in May/June! Lovely drone shots, especially the one looking down into the water. Excellent series and I'm glad you made it out of there with your drone intact!!

So pleased I was able to capture Will in the way you've described as it was just like that in real life too. I'd do another tour with him without hesitation whenever we make it back there! I wish the water was nice and warm - I expect the last week of the summer holidays is fab though. Pleased you liked the drone shots. It was nice to get it back intact this time... it's a goner now though! 🤦‍♀️

Hi Caroline, your presentation is just impeccable - so informative, heart-warming and enthusiastic. I liked it how you incorporated Will's tour in your video. This is a kind of tour I would definitely want to pay for and enjoy. I like all these talks about the plants and butterflies and where they came from. It's incredible how long butterflies can travel for. I am also bewildered how they totally change their structure from being a caterpillar. I know it's well-known even children know it. But I still find this compete transformation incredible. The cape you got to get changed for swimming is a very convenient piece of clothing. A lot of women in fell running community use it to get changed after the race as there's never secluded places. Whether men don't care and just get changed in front of everyone. I keep meaning to buy it, but for now I use a blanket instead. I enjoy watching your Isles of Scilly series.

I'm in total agreement with you over how fascinating the change from caterpillar to butterfly is. Just evolution is a bit mind blowing for me! The cape was a fab investment. I'd initially seen the really expensive branded ones that are like duvets for wild swimmers in the winter and was shocked by their price, so took to Amazon to see if there were cheaper alternatives and found the one in the video. As I'm likely to only ever use it in warmer months I didn't need the thick ones, that one is like a microfibre towel so is a 2 in 1. Thank you so much for your kind words about the videos, it really means a lot 🙏

What I found fascinating about Brhyer was that there was clear evidence that the top 1/3rd of the island marked the maximum extent of the last Ice Age. I found the subject fascinating at school all those decades ago, and while I was walking on the northern part of the island I suddenly realised I was staring at terminal moraine. I similarly walked on Tresco looking back and Bryher, and it confirmed it. Although I had my doubts about whether I was correct, when I got back home I had a chance to look it up on the internet and I was right! If you know the signs, it is very distinctive and you can see exactly where the ice stopped.

This is something I'd picked up when I visited, but I do love a bit of geology so sad I missed it! Bryher and St. Agnes were the 2 islands we didn't feel like we explored in too much depth so next time I think I'll be keeping my eyes well peeled!

Will is absolutely brilliant..we have done a few of his tours and they are always fascinating..even when we all ended up lying on the grass in rabbit poo looking for the miniature pansy..which we found!

Oh you're so lucky to have seen the miniature Pansy as it had been spotted a few weeks before our visit and Will did look for it but without any success unfortunately. I couldn't help but giggle over the thought of ending up with rabbit poo over you in the search for it! 🤣🤦‍♀️ I look forward to taking another one of his tours on a different island when we next visit!

Hi Caroline, lovely video. Bryher is an island of amazing contrasts for its small size, tropical white beaches in the south, rugged cliffs and moorland in the north. My mum always loved going there on a windy day to watch the spray breaking over Shipman Head. Yes Will Wagstaff is a font of knowledge. There used to be a very nice young chap called David Hunt doing bird and wildlife trips back in the 1960s - 80s, my parents befriended him as they were keen birders. Very sadly, he met a very horrible end; he used to do wildlife tours in India in the winters, and one time he went off the path on his own, against all advice, and was killed by a tiger. Was that the last of your Scilly videos or is there more to come? I've been enjoying them immensely.

Oh my goodness, your story about David is so sad! It's good for me to hear these types of stories though as when I go off adventuring, sometimes I need to remind myself to listen to the advice of locals and not go off doing my own thing all the time. I've compiled a video of the different things we got up to on an evening on the Isles of Scilly as the TiC said most things post 2020 revolve around the pub, but as non-drinkers, we found some nice alternatives so thought a video like that could be helpful, then the final vlog style video will be us 'trying' to get off the islands. It wasn't the video I'd planned to make, but its turned out to be a bit of an eventful video, so I'm excited to share that one. I then have a further 3 that are a bit more informative for people who are perhaps planning their first trip to the islands - covering things I'd have liked to know before going there as a first timer. I'm so pleased you've enjoyed these videos and watched them each week

Another beautiful video from the Isles Of Scilly. Thank you 🤩 I have walked the circular path of Bryher, but we didn't swim. It was mire tempting with a beer at the Fraggle Rock café 🤣 Lovely island and thank you for sharing your walk and all the useful info 🙏😊

I definitely would like to walk the coastal path on a future visit as Bryher along with St. Agnes was the other island I felt we didn't explore too much of and I know the coast paths are a great way of seeing a lot. I'm not one for a beer, but anything non alcoholic like ice cream, coffee etc. as a comparison, then I can easily see how a wild swim lost out! 🤣 Thank you again for your really kind words about my videos.

Hi Bill. I'm afraid he doesn't have anything online like a website. He told us he much prefers it when people just show up at the quay at the advertised time on the day as he can always accommodate people. I love that you have the same name!

I did a few tours with Will back in the late eighties early nineties, he has been at it for some time now. Used to say one of his favourite birds was the Swift which he referred to as flying anchors, a real font of all knowledge on Scilly.

Hi Khatoon, I am well thank you, I hope you are too. I love how you're always able to find out the meaning behind the place names where I visit. Bryher being hill makes a lot of sense as there's a huge one close to the beach we spent the afternoon at. I didn't know about the lack of nominated person in the elections either. I guess when you have such small numbers, I can understand why it might be difficult to find someone interested in taking on the extra work!

Ooooh I didn't realise Bryher wasn't as expensive as other islands - if that's in relation to home costs, I wonder if it's got anything to do with there not being a school on the island so he kids have to get a boat across to Tresco?
