Attic Raiders Retro Reviews takes a look at the abstract strategy vintage board game Isolation released in the UK by Action GT in 1978 (first released as Isola in Europe by Otto Maier Verlag in 1972).
The "Don't Get Stranded" strategy game, players must move around the board, removing tiles as they go. Try to isolate your opponent, but don't get trapped yourself!

Awesome review! Simple construct, yet not-so-simple gameplay. Elements of Chess. Also, it kind of reminds me of an early version of Stratego.

Yes, the similarities to other strategy games are definitely there. I love the physicality of popping out those game board pieces though - just a cool upgrade over the original release where you just lifted squares off the board.

Solid Review! I’ve been looking into adding more 2 player strategy games to my collection so I found this one cheap online and snagged it! Thanks buddy! :)

Nice. Hey Mark, did you know Bernardo is still alive and actually is thinking about playing some of his games? Wild I know. : ) Thanks for the review!

Hahahaha! Yeah, Bernardo, Luke and I have been chatting fairly regularly (well, they chat, I throw in the occassional GIF :p ) - I'm looking forward to seeing this island of his in action!

👍 Good review as usual! Really enjoyed the ʼ80s training montage about 3:45 and the ʼ80s final‐showdown montage at 5:46… I have a Lakeside US edition, and it does indeed have the knobby pawns in your editionʼs cover photo (which looks like it could have been taken in the Attic Raiders jungle…). I actually enjoy the gameʼs minimalist esthetics: I like abstracts, and when Iʼm browsing eBay or BoardGameGeek and spot some unfamiliar board arranged in solid‐colored rectangles or circles or triangles or hexagons, my gaming heart goes pitter‐pat! 😀 That said, your Indiana Jones suggestion is both amusing and intriguing. Glad you could overcome your resistance to this gameʼs perceived esthetic deficit. It really is a nice little game-I love the fact that you get to destroy the board!-and Iʼm sure that as a two‐player game, this Isolation has helped you through your householdʼs pandemic isolation. 😛

You got to have a bit of a high-speed play through with a game like this! And nothing makes watching games being played more fun than cheesy 80's electro-rock! I really love games with story and narrative, so ones that are purely abstract and have none of that to hook me in generally don't appeal to that side of what I look for. That said, I will always give a game a chance and I am finding more and more that I enjoy ones with more strategy (just not ones that I have to read a tome for or remember all the things that I can do to mitigate an event - even in D&D I keep forgetting all the extra little things my characters should be able to do in a given situation).

@@AtticRaidersRetroReviews Abstracts can be good frames on which to hang oneʼs own narratives-indeed, you did just fine in bringing in Indy! This game might be particularly conducive-a struggle on a collapsing island…maybe a forerunner to Escape From Atlantis. But _why_ is the island collapsing? Are the two combatants hapless victims of circumstance? or are they the authors of the destruction, wielding their magic wands-or deploying their remote-controlled earthquake machines-or packing their experimental Genesis devices with protomatter, an unstable substance which every ethical scientist in the galaxy has denounced as dangerously unpredictable? Etc. etc.

Seems a bit of an oversight in the rules that you can eliminate the use of half the board in the first few moves of a game.

You COULD eliminate half of the board, but I'm not sure you'd want to as a tactical move as you'd be just as restricted as your opponent. It's always fun seeing what does and doesn't work well as a strategy with this one.

I know from your collection pics (and Norm's interview) that you have the set - I'm not so keen on the Score Four game, but I do want to pick up Blockade at some point and have a go.

The instructions state that you must drop a platform "in front of your rival" however in the video you drop platforms behind your rival after your move. Which is it?
@AtticRaidersRetroReviews
@AtticRaidersRetroReviews 2 жыл бұрын
The rear of the box has a brief overview of gameplay and does indeed say that. However the full game instructions are printed on the inside of the lid and state "After you move your pawn, remove one tile from anywhere on the grid by pushing it out through the board." So it is a little contradictory but you can remove tiles from ANYWHERE. :)
