Appreciate the video. This product has helped me tremendously in reducing brush strokes from varnish application. How long should you wait between isolation coat layers? Thanks.

Complete, detailed, application information is available on our website: www.goldenpaints.com/technicalinfo/technicalinfo_isolationcoat - this recommends only waiting until each coat dries before applying another. How long that takes depends on your studio conditions, but 30-60 minutes after application in most cases.

Will this product work over gold leaf (24k)? If so, can the MSA varnish be applied over the isolation coat after it has been applied? Thanks.

Can you paint over the isolation coat if you decide to go back into the painting?
@GoldenPaints
@GoldenPaints 4 жыл бұрын
Hello Chris, Yes! If you've only applied an Isolation Coat (and not yet any varnish) you can continue to work into the painting with more acrylic colors and mediums - because the Isolation Coat is an acrylic medium. However, for all the reasons provided in this video, you may want to re-apply Isolation Coat after re-working the painting.

Will the varnish damage a painting if applied without the isolation coat? I just want my paintings to have a little gloss finish to them. I don't plan on going through the hassle of removing the finish.

These come ready to use right? Often I see people commenting about a ratio?

Yes, the Isolation Coat is ready to use directly out of the bottle. Gently rock the bottle before use to make sure everything is integrated, then it can be brushed onto your acrylic surface.

How long does a painting need to dry before applying Isolation Coat?

Thanks so much for sharing this video. I would like to know if it is just enough to give 2 coats of this product to protect the acrylic painting and not applying varnish on it . I shall be thankful to you for your kind response.

Hello Vimala, and while a couple coats of Isolation Coat may provide some protection, it is not the level of protection that a removable varnish provides. There are is no UV protection in Isolation Coat, and it is not removable and therefore will not facilitate the cleaning that a varnish provides. Isolation Coat is usually applied to protect paintings through that varnish removal and cleaning process.

@0:34...you say it's for acrylic paintings only, not to be used on oil paintings, watercolors or any water soluable medium... Why can't it be used on water colors? What are the "water soluable mediums" it should not be used on?

I have put fixing spray over an acrylic painted pub sign I have been renovating. Please can anyone tell me if it is safe to apply the isolation coat over the top of this? Many thanks Jason

Hello Jason - I expect the answer depends on what the fixing spray is. You should reach out to our product support team for help with this: help@goldenpaints.com

So do I thin it with water for spray application? When I go in to the technical info, under "Spray application" it talks about two totally different products ("If you want to spray and have access to an airbrush or spray gun, then use 2 parts GAC 500 to 1 part High Flow Medium.") But there's no info about the Isolation coat product itself. Maybe because the guide is more general and the Isolation coat product is new.

Thanks for the catch... I think the recommendation is to thin Isolation Coat with HF medium. This may be a carryover from a previous recommendation. Contact product support (help@goldenpaints.com) to be sure. I'll look into this technical info page.

Hello Sumocat, I got some clarification from our product support team: The linked information sheet recommendations are from before we produced the product named Isolation Coat, which can be thinned with water for spraying. The amount of water required depends on the type of spray equipment. Larger spray guns may be able to spray Isolation Coat without any thinning, HVLP guns should spray well at around a 2:1 ratio (Isolation coat to water), and smaller nozzle airbrushes may need as much as a 1:1 dilution, which is the general threshold for the maximum amount of water.

Hi Golden! If I wanted to add a barrier coating (not glass) over a watercolor or chalk pastel piece, what product would you suggest? Maybe a spray fixative and then resin?

Do you by chance have a link for a good brush for this process? Also, should a different brush be used for varnish?
@GoldenPaints
@GoldenPaints 4 жыл бұрын
Hello, there is a specific recommendation that our product support folks usually make - send an email to help@goldenpaints.com and you should get that and an answer to the question of different brushes (although, I expect you will want to use different brushes if using an MSA Varnish - versus an Acrylic Isolation coat - the whole water vs. solvent thing)

Why would varnish need to be removed from a painting?
@GoldenPaints
@GoldenPaints 4 жыл бұрын
Hello Maria, that is a great question! A quick search in KZfaq will yield videos of art being restored with varnish removal as the first step. Granted, these are generally very old oil paintings, but the idea with varnish has always been as a "fugitive" coating that deflects and sometimes captures dirt and oils that come from long term hanging and handling - intended for eventual removal without affecting the underlying painting. Isolation Coat is basically insurance for that eventuality, with acrylic paintings. Contrary to popular perception, acrylics can be porous and vulnerable to dirt and oils in the same way oil paintings can be (maybe worse!) a quality varnish application will stave off threats to the surface of your painting while adding additional protection for the colors with UV light stabilization.

Dirt and grime build up over the years on the surface of paintings. At some point, when gentle cleaning fails to remove all of the contaminants, a truely reversible varnish can be safely removed without damaging the artwork. Hopefully, this occurs many decades down the road, but sometimes a painting suffers damage during storage or shipping. If the damage is shallow enough and within the varnish layer, you can remove the varnish along with the damage and restore the work to its original surface.
