Back in the old days, used to make amyl-nitrite from nitrite salt and iso-amyl alcohol. The hippies used to incorrectly call it amyl-nitrate and wanted some to use as a type of aphrodisiac. I obliged them and synthed up a batch. I never understood until one day after a synth I washed the reaction flask with some hot water in the sink. Only then did I finally understand why it would probably work for that purpose.

Nitrite esters generally smell very SWEET and FRESH when first made. If they are NOT pure, they will not smell this way. They will have off odors of bitterness or acid or unpleasant, adulterated base alcohol odors.

You need USP grade SN to make consistently good ester nitrites. Once opened it needs to be protected from O2. If the SN isn't good, the reaction temp will spike and you will have all sorts of horrid impurities making it impossible to preserve. You need to absolutely keep the reaction temperature as close to 32F as possible.....a range of 25 to 35F might suffice. Keep in mind that when you mix SN in water, it sucks up heat fast. You need to factor in this temperature change. The temp can drop 10F in a heart beat. If the temperature is too low, the yield will be scant and you will gets tons of thick precipitate.

I have a friend who used isopropyl nitrite recreationally. I had heard of rare eye damage issues but thought them insignificant. The very next day he woke up with a permanent weak spot in his vision that never recovered. You have been advised. I always use an ice bath and have to babysit lest the ice run out and things overheat. I once realized too late that I had added way too much water to the nitrite soln. but as I was now out of nitrite I had no choice but to use it. Besides, the reactant would oil out anyway. But I found for the first time I no longer had gassing and overheating issues even when I became quite liberal with the HCl flow. So the extra water aided in maintaining a higher nitrous acid content and obviously more time for reaction before gassing off. Now I swear by excess water. Someday maybe I will even learn to feed in the sat. carbonate soln. slowly instead of always dumping it and then fighting the foamover. Lol!

@rob leigh You want n-butanol or n-amyl alcohol...nothing ISO. Find a supplier like Science Company in Denver. I use TCI alcohols. Go to Menards and buy Sunnyside muriatic 31%. Buy SN from Duda or Science Company. Buy HiMedia Potassium Carbonate on Amazon. Use excess water, excess SN and acid. 10-11 grams SN in 30mls water, add 11-12 mls alcohol to this, then 15-17 mls acid dripped into the solution at cold temps....you will end up seeing blue nitrous acid. Wash crude nitrite with several rounds of cold water and then 4-5 brine/baking soda rinses. Dry on Kcarb, 20 minutes....pour off on Kcarb 12 hours...pour off onto Kcarb for final storage.

Nitrite esters can be incredible aphrodisiacs, but they have to be pure. They are unstable and do decompose fairly rapidly. Furthermore, the sodium nitrite used to make them is very sensitive to oxygen so it's important to use fresh sodium nitrite of KNOWN purity or you will end up with lots of impurities that will interfere with any desirable effects.
@kenjoneslee

@i Prakash Amyl nitrite cannot be dosed accurately via ampules. There are patents trying to address this issue. Amyl nitrite is ideal for males wanting to bottom. It's like an on/off switch. The second it takes effects, the prostate/anal canal feels relaxed and wonderful. The second it wears off, it no longer feels wonderful. Nipples become very sensitive as well. Toxic impurities, water and acid prevent optimum effects and sometimes add toxic effects, such as unpleasant warming of the face/head.

Amyl nitrite should smell fresh like camphor or have a medicinal scent. Butyl nitrite should smell fresh and VERY sweet like a thick candy liquor. Isobutyl nitrite should smell fresh and like peppermint or wintergreen. Any odor that isn't like these....or any "off" odor of any kind means there are impurities that are not good.

I tried this and either my alcohol was weak or the acid was too strong. Make sure to not overdo the acid addition. Maybe check the pH every once in a while. Using Doug's measurements I actually got a runaway from the nitrite decomposing after it got too acidic. I had a scrubber in place so it's not a big deal but still. I tried again and it happened again but instead of adding more acid like last time I immediately separated it and washed it as fast as I could. It worked after that haha.

I have seen Isopropyl Nitrite dissolve steel, epoxy, silicone caulk, magnets and everything BUT glass. The only problem with removing vacuum grease from a seal is having a container big enough to immerse the seal in the liquid. The stuff evaporates so fast it might be near impossible to apply it to the seal long enough without resorting to immersion. Might be possible to wrap a paper towel around the seal and wet it with the nitrite and the wrap with Saran wrap to slow evaporation.

@@fizzyplazmuh9024 That certainly sounds like it would need a hardcore, ignition-proof fume hood to go with it. From the description of this stuff, it sounds like it will make your butthole fall off if you smell it, and you're saying it evaporates agressively.

Well if you sniff this stuff, it will lower your blood pressure, used to be used as treatment for angina instead of nitroglycerin. But it reacts with other blood pressure medications and can cause fatally low blood pressure and spontaneous fainting. The isopropyl ester has the shortest half life of all alkyl nitrites used medically, it goes up not with carbon branch length, but number of carbon branches, 1-butyl nitrite has a shorter half life, never used in humans but I've tested it, 2-methylpropyl nitrite has a longer half life, but less intense effects, amyl nitrite has longer effects with about the same intensity and cyclohexyl nitrite has the longest effects but is not very potent at vasodilation. Chemically they react with ketones under acidic conditions to give oximes and they can be used to selectively nitrate aromatic groups

A high purity sodium nitrite will produce a deep royal blue nitrous acid that strongly effervesces and is nearly transparent in clarity. Once the sodium nitrite starts to degrade, almost immediately once you expose it to air, it will produce less and less nitrous acid and the color of the nitrous acid will become hazy and light blue and then greenish once the sodium nitrite has totally bit the dust.

why isn't any 2-chloropropane formed? Thinking through the mechanism (assuming an electrophilic addition of the H+ to the delta negative O, forming water, then nitrite ions joining to the carbocation) could it not react with the chloride ions in the mixture as well? Thanks in advance if anyone can answer this.
@billsmathers7787
@billsmathers7787 5 жыл бұрын
The mechanism isn't a nucleophillic substitution reaction on the carbon (the conditions aren't harsh enough for a secondary alcohol like isopropanol to participate). Instead the nitrite and hydrochloric acid react to form nitrosonium cation in solution, which displaces a proton off of isopropanol's hydroxyl group by attacking the lone pair.

I‘m just gonna try and answer as best as I can: I was very surprised that this esterification worked as well as it did so it might be very plausible that the acid+alcohol will work just as well, especially since (I think) he used stoichionetric amounts of HCl and NaNO2 which means in the end, he did only have HNO2 (and NaCl as a sideproduct). If you try it and that doesn‘t work (highly unlikely) you can just get NaOH and HNO2 to make your NaNO2 which you can then dry (carefully. I‘ve got the suspicion it‘ll decompose to NO and some NO2, especially if there‘s water present). It shouldn‘t form the nitrate bc that‘d need quite a bit of oxidizing which, just using the two reagents, isn‘t really given. You could tell the difference by distillation (iPnitrate 100 deg C and iPnitrite 40 deg C) tho that might be a bit too much work.

HCl is soluble in water forming the hydronium ion while isopropyl Nitrate is insoluble in water. This means that when you wash the Isopropyl Nitrite with NaCl the water will be pulled from the Isopropyl thus removing the HCl from the Isopropyl Nitrite. There is no need to add a base to the Isopropyl Nitrite.

If it be so , well I have a bumper crop of zinc nitrite. But here's my advice! I'm going to go to Google and get on A.I and ask if the substitution can be done, if not all I have to do is ask how to do the conversion and A.I will give detailed instructions! Been doing this for about almost a year now and it is a godsend at times, but sometimes with more complicated compounds you must run a double check with a different source as the A.I can give you a mixed up blue print! I would like to know a simple way to test sodium nitrite for purity? I would like to know at what purity the sodium nitrite has to be in order to get a high purity nitrite ester. I would like to know what sodium nitrite degrades to and what chemicals are produced during an ester reaction once this decomposition has started to occur. My hunch is that sodium nitrite has a limited shelf life and is not stable when exposed to air; hence, high grade nitrite esters are very difficult to make consistently.

1) it's NaNO2, sodium nitrite, not NaNO3, sodium nitrate. anything reasonably pure should be fine 2) use an equimolar amount of H2SO4, and then dilute it 3) maybe -10°C. if you don't have a freezer, you could probably just mix the two slow enough to keep it at room temperature. keep it cold to avoid decomposition 4) H2SO4 + 2 NaNO2 > 2 HNO2 + NaSO4 5) i don't know

Hydrochloric acid is more acidic than sodium nitrite in the presence of water and once reacted, they form nitrous acid.
@John-mk3oe
@John-mk3oe 7 жыл бұрын
You need USP grade sodium nitrite for this reaction to work. If you get degraded SN, you will get all manner of impurities and not the nitrous acid you are hoping for.

steveu235 Sulfuric acid is drier, so won't contaminate the product with as much water, but as he said most of the water was removed in the purification step. Also there are other pros and cons. HCl fumes, while H2SO4 does not. However, H2SO4 is significantly more expensive

This patent: www.google.com/patents/US2927939 claims that alkali carbonates can be used to stabilize short chain alkyl nitrites, has anyone tried this, does it work? i plan on making some but don't have any immediate use for it and weekly pressure venting due to the short shelf life sounds like a pain. Does anyone have experience with this?
@John-mk3oe
@John-mk3oe 8 жыл бұрын
The carbonates work but have to be anhydrous. MS4 works too as long as still active. Activated alumina absorbs water which is the biggest enemy initially. They are using epoxidized linseed oil as well. Good nitrites are hard to make repeatedly. You can't judge Doug's brew unless you are sniffing it for odor and effects. Lots of impurities can arise and they make the stuff unfit to inhale.
