The Cowsills Play the Playboy Mansion

Make that the faux Playboy Mansion. When Hugh Hefner conceived his 1969-1970 "Playboy After Dark" TV program, the idea was to re-create a typical Playboy Mansion party within a studio; in this case CBS Television City in Los Angeles.
This clip, from 1970, treats us to the Cowsills as Hef's guests. Surreal pairing, eh? Made even more so by the fact the band chose a religious-themed song for the centerpiece of their set. So how did the nation's First Family of Milk end up performing in this den of iniquity? Turns out, as is revealed at the beginning of the video, that Nanci Roberts - a regular on the show - was married to guitarist Bob Cowsill for six years; a lengthy union by California standards.
A bit of history about the Cowsills: The group - five brothers, one sister and their mother - began in the mid 1960s and soon drew attention due to their unusual mix of family members.
As the Cowsills notoriety grew, it wasn't long before the American Dairy Association took note of the bovine connotation of the family's name and realized they would be a perfect fit to shill their product. Numerous print and TV advertisements pitching milk would follow and proved quite lucrative, although the family members would later concede that the infamous "Romulus and Remus" ad campaign depicting the seven of them drinking milk straight from the udders of cows was a poorly conceived idea.
By 1970 the Cowsills reigned supreme among the existing family bands. While others, such as the Osmond and Defranco families, attempted to topple them, none managed to do so. But all of that would soon change with the arrival of the King Family on the scene. Comprised of some 300 family members going back several generations, the massive singing King Family was determined to ascend to the top and came gunning for the current champs: the Cowsills. What would follow has come to be recognized as some of the darkest days in music history.
In the early 1970s the Cowsills had gathered at their secluded family compound in the mountains of northern California for a much-needed sabbatical. Instead they found themselves relentlessly chased through the hills by torch-wielding mobs of King Family members. It was this harrowing event that marked the beginning of the end; putting a strain on the band that would eventually spill over into their live performances. One particularly troubling incident that revealed the inner strain occurred during a live show in Ohio. While singing the song "Hello, Hello," Susan inadvertently changed the lyric "would you like some of my tangerine?" to "would you like some of my tambourine?" before launching into an impassioned tambourine solo that went on for over 20 minutes while the rest of the band looked on helplessly. While Susan was a virtuoso tambourinist, this was nevertheless uncharacteristic behavior which culminated in her being led from the stage for "observation." But the rest of the band knew the real problem: the stress of dealing with the King Family was taking its toll.
To escape the King Family's reign of terror, the Cowsills eventually scattered and isolated themselves to some of the most inhospitable nether regions of the globe -- from the stagnant, mosquito-infested swamps of Louisiana to the frozen wastelands of Canada. The King Family's ranks would eventually become weakened through inbreeding, but the irreparable damage to the Cowsills had been done.
If any of the above lacks accuracy blame Wikipedia.
So what do we have here? Things kick off with a beautiful rendition of "Where Is Love?" from the musical "Oliver."
The tempo then picks up with their own composition "IIxII" ("Two By Two"). My religious days are blessedly long behind me but that doesn't prevent me from loving this one; it's just a flat out great tune - the sort of tune that defies the bubblegum category the group is so often shoehorned into. They could be singing about washing dishes to this tune and it would still sound great. Barry sings it with such passion and conviction you'd think he'd written the words himself, but IIxII was written by Bill Cowsill (inexplicably under the pseudonym "David Ray"). Bill had left the band the previous year.
By this point in the band's career Susan's spirited dancing to the music had become a show within itself. When Byron Gilliam - a dancer on the program - engages Susan in a dance at 5:29, watch how smoothly she segues from dancing to spinning around toward the microphone and delivering her vocals right on cue. The timing of a seasoned pro! She was very much in her element in this venue, surrounded by other dancers.
The show closes with another good one: "Poor Baby."

That girl could dance! Had a crush on Susan when I was a kid. All these years later she's still making music and I still got a crush on her. Listen to some of her interviews on KZfaq.....she grew up to be the beautiful pearson we hoped she would and has a great outlook on life, both past and present. It seems to me this video shows. a certain raw and realness not found with network or record company oversight and control. They should be in the R&R Hall of Fame as they are an important part of that era, The world will be singing about flower girls in 2067 and beyond.......we owe them thanks for making the universe just s little bit brighter and a little bit better.

This is a great example of how The Cowsills sounded live (or at least live vocals). Actually, as one may clearly see cables along the floor of the band's stage area, this may be one of those genuinely live-on-television performances by a rock & roll band. By the way, "isorindu," your description of the battle between The King Family and our beloved Cowsills is hysterically funny, and not necessarily without a bit of truth, as those family configurations of singing vocal groups were raging by the early '70s, what with all variations of Cowsills, DeFrancos, Jacksons, Kings, Lennons, Osmonds, Wilsons, and, dare I say it, "Partridges" (in or out of pear trees)! And thank you, for explaining this program was recorded at CBS Television City in Hollywood, not at an actual Playboy Club or Mansion. One wonders which studio of CBS-TV City was actually used for Hef's syndicated show, if the "Playboy Mansion" parties-of-the-airwaves were staged in the same studio where Art Linkletter once held court with his "House Parties," or perhaps where later Gene Rayburn played all sorts of "Match Games" in between his "Encino Excursions" (of cocktail soirees) with Brett Somers and Charles Nelson Reilly? If ever you find out the precise location (studio #) of this "Playboy Mansion," please let us know.

Playboy After Dark was mostly live performances. One of the only cases where it was sync was when Three Dog Night was on and it was just Danny, Cory and Chuck and not the full ensemble. The great story was when the Grateful Dead appeared (one of the classic episodes), Owsley Stanley (who was handling sound for the group at the time) got ticked because the producers wouldn't let him set up the sound system his way. His revenge, dropping some Owsley Purple into the coffee pot. Everybody except Hef (who drank about a case of Pepsi a day back then) got obviously dosed, which made for a scene at the end of the show.

I think their LIVE stuff was so much better than the album versions. This is rockin' and the album cut is rather ho-hum. They were restricted WAY too much in the studio. They are rockin' here...well, Cowsill Rockin' at least.

Thanks so much!! They were a favorite of mine back in my teen days....And- this reminds me that on a scale of 1- 10, Barbi Benton was a 26!!!! One of the all time great lines: When Hef first asked her out (she was about 18) she said "Gee, I don't know, I've never been out with anyone older than 22" and Hef said "That's OK, neither have i!" Classic!;->

Susan Cowsill was always a Groovy Dancer, but I like the way all these jet setters are free style dancing - everybody with different moves. Barbi Benton and Hugh Hefner were the cool cat couple of the day and knew how to groove on the dance floor too.

I watched the documentary on ShowTime and got quite a lot of insight into this family and their peculiar dynamics, but have so many questions still. It would be great if someone (perhaps a member of the family) could work with someone and write a biography of The Cowsills and their musical ride. Now, this Playboy After Dark gig really surprises me; it seems an exceedingly odd booking for a family group like this, even if Bob had married one of the Bunnies. Perhaps it's another example of a decision the Bud made that a professional manager would not have. It's so discordant with their image.
@laneyday7943
@laneyday7943 10 жыл бұрын
After seeing the documentary and knowing Bud tried to have sex with his wife's sisters and their daughters (his nieces) and being inappropriate with his daughter Susan, the Playboy Mansion gig was for him. Notice he is never on camera (even though he made an appearance on every other special/tv show), but you can bet he was there. He was probably having (or trying to have) sex with a PlayBoy Bunny. And did you notice that after the first song, Barbara is no where to be found/seen. Probably trying to find her "Cad/womanizer" of a husband.
