I would have guessed there was at least one or two Haiti mods. The whole slave rebellion/Haitian Empire/being ruined by buying your freedom from France storyline basically writes half the focus tree

They didn't buy their freedom, but diplomatic recognition. Something that Haiti, being a nation born of a genocidal slave revolt, was struggling to get. The Haitian leadership at the time thought that getting it was the first step towards rebuilding the country and putting it back on the path to prosperity, and so was willing to pay any price for it (the gambit didn't work, obviously). They did also pay reparations for "lost french property (slaves). In that sense, the Haitians did technically buy their freedom, except that by that point they had already paid for it in blood. In reality, it was just an excuse the French used to take advantage of Haiti's desperate situation and humiliate them at the same time.

@@lavaknight3682 haiti was the first western slave revolt that succeeded. insofar as Haiti has a tradition it's shooting slaveholders. thanks to this, they got absolutely turbofucked in a way the Americans didn't: when the Americans ran to France saying "hey if you back us you can really piss off the English" the French said "hon hon hon sounds good to us here have a bunch of money and guns and naval support." when the Haitians ran to England saying "hey if you back us you can really piss off the French" the English said "oi mate it's not even that you're black, it's you saying peasants are allowed to kill inbred aristocrats for torturing them. we take that MUCH more personally than the black thing. fuck off." as a result of which the Haitians had to pay back the French for their losses in the Haitian revolution, with interest. basically imagine if America's reward for independence was having to pay England the cash value of all the land in America, all the buildings, and all the people. we had a hard enough time paying back some of the French loans, if we'd gotten the Haiti package we would probably not be a country

@@juicy342yt4 the "you nerds are stuck fighting napoleon" exemption ended up serving us real good that and the Louisiana Purchase, wherein Thomas Jefferson said "we will not pay back any of our debts, but we will buy the entire Mississippi River Valley from you" got the French off our backs one of the big alt history scenarios is what if Napoleon, instead of sending an army to stomp Haiti back into obedience, sent that same army to Haiti with a "hey what if you guys linked up with us and invaded the southern united states, the only part of that whole dumb colonial enterprise that makes money." order probably would have taken most of it!

I know these types of episodes arent as fun for you to play but these are my favorite types, seeing you as a third rate power starting as a no-rate power is a lot fun. That side war you were leading as the mini Comintern vs the mini axis was interesting. It also started in similar conditions, you had more land and more manpower but didn't have the time to develop it peru had the troops In the beginning to be ahead but time was against them
