Jawdat al-Khoudary's home was known as the most beautiful place in the Gaza Strip. Now, nothing remains of the house or garden.
Khoudary, one of Gaza' most successful business men, whose family dates back nine generations in Gaza, had created a 100,000-square-foot oasis amid the besieged coastal enclave.
Ahmed Alnaouq is a Palestinian journalist from Gaza and co-founder of We Are Not Numbers.
Yasmeen El Khoudary is an independent London-based researcher and writer specialised in Palestinian archaeology and cultural heritage.
Chris Rose is the director of Amos Trust.
But now, the mosaic paths which weaved between verdant groves of exotic plants and greenhouses filled tens of thousands of tiny cactuses from around the world have been turned to desert by Israeli bulldozers. And the ornate columns and chandeliers which filled his adjacent home have been torn down.

Hello gardeners from Gaza. I know you are suffering, I am sorry for your loss and pray for your safety. In 2014 I became homeless and lost my rare collection of plants. Hundreds of plants that took years of care and love and money. I still feel immense sadness thinking about it to this day, even though i have a house and a plant collection again. I hope you have plants and gardens one day again soon. When you rebuild after the war, I will send you some of my orchids, carnivorous plants and cacti.

Something of the same happened to me but you have recreated beauty of Nature from such loss - remember, beautiful roses cannot be made without manure! Such is the case with these beautiful gardens and with others who have lost so much - the seeds of joy, beauty and hope can never be extinguished. I am planting a tree and sowing seeds as a symbolic gesture of solidarity with Jawdat, with his people and with the message that such sad ists will not win in their mission of hate

I am a gardener from Australia who learnt about this famous garden some time ago in a documentary of some kind. It was one of the places I thought of after October 7 - wondering what would happen to it. It is so painful to think of that garden being destroyed. And all the historical artefacts. Shameful.

@@sharonrichards1627 I would agree to a point. For much of the world, their cultures have been destroyed by the same dominant paradigm of power&militarism. It seems most humans now grow up not knowing what culture is, where it came from and what ancient worlds are. They only know what capitalism and a life oriented towards money and surviving within that system is. The Palestinians, by contrast, kept their culture intact while being fully engaged with the modern world through becoming highly educated in all fields, especially science and medicine. Their music&dance is also unique to their culture. I believe the israellis were threatened by the reality of the Palestinian's accomplishments and the israelis knew the real history. That Palestine is ancient, it is not european& hebrew and didn't begin in '48. It's history, now buried in the isrealli imposed rubble, lives in the Palestinian people and the land which cannot be erased. And the world will never forget. Would that I could have left the planet before this, now it is etched in my own memory.

😢 The opportunity to glimpse each other's pain and beauty is so important in this life. This morning, like every morning for 7 months, we cry again for Gaza. We tell ourselves, "What I go through is nothing compared to what Palestinians experience." But I think we owe it to the people of Gaza to let them know how much many of us do share in their pain, how incomparably painful and nerve wracking these 7 mths have been for people all over this damned planet. I want Gaza to at least know how many people have spent these months carrying the greatest pain and disappointment of our lives. That we do not get on with our normal lives because we are completely distracted by this heartbreak. That in fact our world is shattered. They deserve to know that their suffering is breaking this damned world!

Jawdat al-Khoudary you have inspired me sir! I want to make my home one of beauty too, and I will remember your passion. We can help to rebuild the destruction that was blindly done. I live in the USA, and a lot of America was destroyed to make cities, and get resources, and we are slowly learning what a horrible thing was done. People are learning and getting advice from the Indigenous people who took care of the land, and returning some of it back to what it was or recreating it to work with nature and all life. Yasmeen, you are so right. You shouldn't have to tell your story for people to care! but I so admire the strength it takes to do it anyway! Jawdat, what you created is absolutely breathtaking. It is an important piece of human history, and to Gaza and its culture and those connections to your people.. it is for all of those reasons that it is so special that also made it a target as dangerous to Israel's false narratives as any human in this atrocity. No matter what they destroy, they cannot erase the many memories that you and everyone who enjoyed it, they cannot erase the beautiful photos you have..most important of all..the world now knows the beauty that is in Palestine and even more beauty inside its people! The world has been made blind by our governments for many years but we have seen the truth now and my generation and those that have come after do not give up until we receive justice and freedom for all! No. Absolutely not. The answer to death, destruction, destroying beauty, gardens, history is NOT more death, destruction, destroying more beauty, gardens, history. Do you think this heartbroken gardener will be made happier by seeing more plants killed, more gardens destroyed, more beauty defiled? I think it would break his heart a second time. The answer is refusing to let the Israelis destroy beauty and life and the humanity within ourselves. The answer to their destruction is creating more beauty, growing more plants, protecting more history, incorporating more culture into everyday life for adding more beauty and life into the world. Not becoming as evil as they are. Then they win.

As a horticulturalist and Permaculture teacher I feel this pain so deeply. I actually Im crying also. Because these are my dreams that are as yours. . Im busy with such garfening. This is a shock. Ive been imagining little gardens been destroyed. Old trees, Agricukture capacity. This is killing me inside. Im so enraged that such herittage is attavked and destroyed lile this. Because they dont want the world tk know the civilisation of Palestine. Im sorry for this loss. I can understand. It represented the spirit of Place. Its en ecology ecodided. We know from the news certain stuff (can they all be called Facts?), but when it becomes the personal, the intimate, the dreams, the love and care and attention for those gardens, for me it hits me even more (I don’t have television so don’t see all that is happening, but see and know enough not to be totally unaware)… It seems like the world is with you and your land - but the people who have chosen power and money above humanity and decency are those who make decisions. And let’s look at it - it IS ALL about POWER and ESPECIALLY MONEY… Why people vote in these individuals rather than peacemakers and honest politicians is beyond any reasonable person’s comprehension… Thank you Chris and Ahmed and Jawdat and Yasmeen, for sharing, for caring… from someone who cares…

Yasmeen and dad, I feel your pain as I grew to appreciate home and things related to, living abroad. Places where we spend our life or part of, are part of our memories and identities. The loss is deep but you will always carry these memories in your heart and when time allows, you will rebuild that. The flowers will be more beautiful because the blood of all these people who died will embrace the seeds and let them grow even more beautiful and stronger and… deeper. Peace

This man’s pain is so so deep - and that of his daughter too. Their loss is immense in so many ways. What must be equally painful to accept is that people exist who would willingly and deliberately destroy such incredible beauty, people who are so devoid of appreciation or so full of hatred that they are prepared to carry out this unspeakable act of destruction and cruelty. God forgive them and may God comfort this cultured and dignified man and his family. May Gaza rise again to be a place of beautiful gardens full of its beautiful people and the laughter of their many children. 🙏🍉
