In announcing his resignation, Benny Gantz said the government needs to put the return of hostages "above political survival," saying in part that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is making "total victory impossible."
Gantz is a former military chief and was, until Sunday, a centrist member of Israel's three-man war Cabinet. Gantz joined Netanyahu's government shortly after Hamas' October 2023 attack in a show of unity. His presence also boosted Israel's credibility with its international partners, as he has good working relations with the United States.

Ok so GantZ doing this benefits who exactly? It doesn’t benefit a single Israeli. I don’t think it even benefits him. I don’t know why he would do this but this pretty much amounts to mutiny, treason and backstabbing. The man is a rake. This is wartime how could he do this when Israel needs all hands on deck? Israel needs to show a United front. Not only does Israel have Hamas to deal with and the Gaza situation but also Hezbollah, the other proxies and the regime and every other nation, politician and even protestor out there who wants to see Israel destroyed. At such times, Israel, which is the only nation that could possibly be put into such a situation by the world, needs to show a United front. Complete solidarity and not discord. Instead, we have the families protesting and although I can’t imagine what they are going through, I know that protesting only hurts the chances of bringing their loved ones home, it does not help it. I understand the families would give up all of Israel at this point for their loved ones and I don’t blame them but they can’t do that. They must think about the 1,400 who were brutally raped and slaughtered on Oct 7 and the young warriors we have lost inside Gaza who are giving their lives trying to find and save their loved ones. Those people can never be returned. They should also consider what happens if Israel gives in to the insane demands. The mamzer Islamists in Gaza want all of the mass murderers released. Remember what happened when Israel released 1027 mamzers for one soldier? Yo-yo Sinwar happened and Oct 7 happened. It’s just not an option. And if Israel gives in to their demands they will do this again and again knowing that they can get what they want by capturing Israelis. I’m sorry to say this. But releasing those 1027 for the one was foolish and any other such move will only make it worse. This teaches every enemy of Israel that taking their people will force Israel to capitulate. Eventually there will be nothing left of Israel. This is war.

It's weird. Gantz went into politics after being the commander in chief of the IDF. Israelis tend to trust ex-CiC in politics because it shows they did their time, that they contributed to the security of the country, that they're serious, and that they have an experience leading. Gantz talked strong, but he folded on so many occasions in his political career... This guy is supposed to know how the military works. He just saw a successful operation pushing on Israel's hostage retrieval agenda. Why did he rage quit? Just because he's technically Left while Netanyahu is Right, so he's Opposition and needs to object everything?
