The International Court of Justice (ICJ) holds public hearings on the request submitted by South Africa on 10 May 2024 in the case South Africa v. Israel
The International Court of Justice (ICJ), the principal judicial organ of the United Nations, holds public hearings on the request for the indication of provisional measures and the modification of provisional measures previously prescribed by the Court submitted by South Africa on 10 May 2024 in the case concerning Application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in the Gaza Strip (South Africa v. Israel) on 16 and 17 May 2024, at the Peace Palace in The Hague, the seat of the Court. Session held under the presidency of Judge Nawaf Salam, President of the Court.
The State of Israel requested the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to reject the request for the modification and indication of provisional measures submitted by the Republic of South Africa.
The UN’s top Court in the Hague heard the oral argument from Israel today (17 May).
Gilad Noam, Co-Agent of Israel said, “Mr. President. Members of the Court. It is an honor to appear before you once again on behalf of the State of Israel. This case, even by its very name, the application of the convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in the Gaza Strip suggests an inversion of reality.”
Tamar Kaplan-Tourgeman,Co-Agent of Israel, said, “Mr. President. Members of the Court. It is an honor to appear before you on behalf of the State of Israel. If you've just heard, Israel is still under attack. We are still counting more and more of that and attending to thousands more who are wounded.”
The hearing came after the request for the indication/modification of provisional measures submitted by South Africa last week. The Court heard South Africa’s oral argument on Thursday (16 May).
