The US support for Israel was actually quite limited until the 1970s, when the Soviets started pouring money and weapons to their Arab allies in Middle East, leading the Americans to provide more weapons to Israel. The US was neutral during the Six Day War. Only after the Yom Kippur War with the Camp David Accords did the US start to develop a close relationship with Israel.

In addition, the Jews did arm themselves during the truce. They had been fighting with old, even ancient weapons, unlike the arab modern weapons. The arabs also tried to arm themselves with better weapons, and they would not have had to smuggle them it; they could have brought them in, in full view. And they tried!
