Reading the wonderful autobiography of the great G Meir, "My Life'', brought me here. Along with the founding fathers of Modern day Israel, Chaim Weizman and Ben Gurion, Golda Meir could rightly be called the founding mother of the Jewish state. I once read that Golda's staff bought her a chic Chanel handbag to use on her trips abroad since they thought her "Jewish Grandmother" large black handbag was not setting the right image for a world leader. She opened the gift, complimented everyone on the chic handbag, and went back to using her original handbag. The Chanel handbag was never seen again.

Fascinating! Nixon was very helpful to Israel, although he was personally anti-Jewish, and Golda was very grateful to him. They got along splendidly. Both of their legacies are complicated, Nixon’s with Watergate; and Israelis have mixed feelings about Golda. They certainly understand her role in the return of the Jews to their ancient homeland, but are justifiably astonished at her bumbling leadership during the Yom Kippur war (these observations come from my daughter and her family, who are Israeli).
@susanprice7202 Жыл бұрын
Nixon had few shining moments domestically within the US but his skills lay in International relationships and ally building. I have read (I assume correctly) that while in the midst of Watergate, Nixon took a call in the middle of the night from Mrs. Meir telling him how essential it was to have immediate access to US military equipment. By making sure Kissinger and others followed through for Israel, Nixon provided an incalculable benefit to our most important middle east ally.
