A Reform, Reconstructionist or Conservative Jew would have no problem marrying someone who converted or is Christian. And there are Orthodox Jews who marry converts. Some very closed ultra-Orthodox sects discourage marrying a convert and it's rare in those sects for such marriages to happen, like one of them said, if a convert tries to join their community they encourage the convert to marry another convert instead of marrying someone born and raised within the sect. But likewise if a secular Jew, born to a Jewish family but raised irreligious, and then who becomes religious, tries to join their sect, they will also try to pair that person off with another newly religious person or perhaps a convert. These ultra-Orthodox extreme sects don't represent the majority of Orthodox Jews though, and even with these communities there are converts hwo occasionally join and marry born members of the sect (although usually it's to someone who is divorced or has some other "skeleton in the closet" and whose "worth" has come down). Back in the 1960s there was a very big rabbi, the leader of the extreme anti-Zionist sect Neturei Karta who married a French convert from Catholicism, after he became widowed. Actually I don't think there's enough representation to secular jews. Most of the people here are on the religious side, very few are truly secular and none at all are atheists or close. The truth is that there's a big majority of secular and mostly atheist jews in Israel who would probably answer "I couldn't care less what anybody does with their religion". I expected to see some of that as well, but I guess going after these people for this kind of question is a bit mundane and would get some boring results. :)

ArrantFrost g'day! i'm not maori, but am from NZ originally. i'm converting with the reform movement in north london. if you are interested in it, i would recommend going to local synagogues for shabbat, see which one you like, i don't know how much choice you'll have in nz? it's been a very interesting journey for me so far, there's lots of resons to convert, but make sure you think it through first, because it's not easy,. good luck! let me know how you get on.

when you convert, you join the jewish people, their culture and history. It becomes yours as you become a part of the jewish people in far more sense than just religious practices. You can see it as naturalization. In the past, the converts basically assimilated into the jewish culture and rarely, if at all kept any aspects of the gentile culture. In modern times it is different of course and cultures are mixed to a certain extent anyway. But if the jewish culture and history do not resonate with you at all, I'm not sure why would you want to convert and join the jewish people then. There is an interesting correspondence between one Obadiah, a 12th century convert from Islam, and Maimonides, a prominent philosopher and influential Jewish scholar in the Middle Ages who lived in Spain, Morocco, Egypt and Palestine. Obadiah wrote several letters to Maimonides, asking about the status of the convert in Judaism. Could he say the parts of prayer that refer to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as his forefathers? Could he thank God for having taken “us” out of Egypt or thank God for not having made him a gentile? (not that there is anything bad about being a gentile)-all parts of the standard prayer liturgy. Maimonides replied to his letters, assuring him that he could. As a full-fledged member of the Jewish nation, Obadiah was just as much a descendant of our forefathers, and heir to the Jewish tradition, as any other Jew.

I don't think that's how he meant it- he was comparing the feeling of certainty one should have when forming a long term relationship with another living thing. His point is that it is not trivial and if you're second guessing at all then you prob shouldn't do it. I don't see a comparison here between the two groups and I think he has a good point about relationships in general. If one finds faults in a being for things beyond its control then its best they don't get involved with that being for everyone's sake.

How does it work when you can prove you are genetically jewish with DNA testing, yet your great great great grandparents on both sides converted to christianity 'back in the day'? I refer to myself as messianic jew as I'm genetically jewish, but raised christian and follow both parts of the Bible. But I have no idea how jewish people would view someone like me. If your lineage gets lost (i.e. due to diasporas or forced/voluntary conversion) do you count as jewish?
