In episode two, Richard Bass examines Israel-Palestine from the biblical era through the early years of Judaism, until the reign of the ancient Israelites ended with the destruction of their Temple at the hands of the Romans. He explains how the region became known as Judea, and how the Israelites battled against the empires of Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Greece and Rome and the challenges of imperialism, slaughter and dispersion that they presented.

I would like to see the basis for claiming David and Solomon actually existed, as well as citation for all other factual claims in this episode. Can we have links to your research material please, or at least citations? Critical thinking requires a credible source, after all.

Excellent point Eran. Critical thinking should absolutely be based on credible sources which for our purposes I will interpret as extra-biblical evidence/sources which support the Israelite and/or biblical narratives. The primary source materials include archaeological and epigraphic artifacts and correspondence from the cultures of the ancient Israelites, Phillistines as well as the annals of kings/empires of the time (Egyptians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians). The following list is by no means meant to be exhaustive but should provide a pretty good start to addressing your request. You should easily find material online that will provide quite a bit more detail to my itemized list below. 1. Re: Existence of “Israel” in 13th c. BCE search Merneptah Stele (also mentioned and shown in the video) 2. Re: Existence/Arrival of Sea Peoples especially Phillistines search pottery fragments found in abundance in Gezer and Beth-Shemesh dating to late 12th and early 11th c. BCE and also El Amarna letters (Egyptian). 3. Re: Existence of the Kingdom of David search the Tel Dan Inscription/Stele and City of David Excavations. 4. Re: Existence of Biblical/Old Testament scriptures existence at this time see Dead Sea Scrolls. 5. Re: Existence of King Solomon search for information on the First Temple and its detsruction as well as archaelogical excavations that have revealed the remains of impressive buildings and fortifications at Gezer, Megiddo, and Hazor dating the time period associated with King Solomon’s reign. 6. Re: Existence and fall of the Kingdoms of Israel and Judah, the Baylonian Exile, and Judea search Assyrian Eponym Chronicle, Mesha Stone, Annals of Shalmaneser III and the Kurkh Monolith (which mention Israel’s kings Ahab and Jehu), inscriptions of Tiglath-pileser III and Anals Sargon, Annals of Sennacharib (detailed description of his punitive expedition against Kingdom of Judah), Siloam Tunnel and Inscription, Babylonian Chronicles, Bulla (seal) of Baruch ben Neriah, Cyrus Cylinder and Edict of Cyrus (noted and shown in video), Coins bearing he name Yehud (Judea) from 4th c. BCE, 7. Re: Destruction of Temple at the hands of the Romans in 70 CE search Arch of Titus, The Burnt House, Judea capta coins.

so far, its a very good and balanced documentary, but just one thing i'd like to add. when you talk about the Philistines, you should know that the Philistines was not their actual name. it was the Israelis who named them, that, the 'Plishtim' as it is in Hebrew, and the name comes from the Hebrew word "Palash" which means to invade. when the Philistines invaded, they never controlled much of the levant, in their prime, they controlled a small strip of land from Northern Gaza to Ashqelon.

Hey! Obviously you've got to pick and choose what goes into the videos. But since the Roman exile is something that gets brought up a _ton_ in modern discussions of the region, it might be valuable to go back and cover that in some detail. For example: a big part of the tension that existed between the Romans and the Judeans was really between the Greeks and Judeans. The last autonomous Judean dynasty, the Hasmoneans, was incredibly brutal (I would say genocidal). In addition to virtually annihilating the Samaritans, the Hasmoneans killed tens of thousands of Greek non-combatants in at an attempt at ethnic cleansing. So you've got a part of a repeated theme in the region: multi-party conflict. Ethnic conflict (and attendant terrorist actions) between Judeans and Greeks turned out to be impossible for the foreign empire to manage. Whereas the British would eventually just throw up their hands, the Romans punished the Judean client state. The Roman army destroyed the Judeans' temple and exiled the leaders of some idealogical movements. By this time, the majority of world Jewry had been outside of Judea for generations. Sixty-five years later, Hadrian banned Jews from living in Jerusalem, although it's evident this didn't stick. So (and I say this as a Jewish person), I think it's extremely important not to buy into the simplistic "the Romans kicked the Jews out of Israel" narrative.

So... given that everything covered here is in the old testament... saying it's "biblical" isn't inaccurate, but it's not *only* biblical, it's also in the Tanakh. So, this is a choice and it makes me wonder if this is because it's just easier to use "biblical" as a shorthand, if there's a specific target audience in mind or something else

The Tanakh is often referred to as 'the Jewish bible' by Jews and people in general, or just 'bible' for short by Jews. Also - the old testament in the Christian bible is the Tanakh.

As a person who is neither a jew nor a Christian, I understand the word 'biblical' but although from your comment and the comment from @MadHatressAdAstra I have worked out what the Tanakh is, I didn't previously know. This is probably because I am from a society modelled on Christian values. However, considering where english language videos on the internet are likely to be watched, it makes sense to presume most people watching this video come from (heavy quotation marks, mostly referring to the US and Europe,) 'western countries' which are modelled on Christian values. I don't know, but a possible solution?

I love how there is absolutely no reference at all to how david became king over the israelites. Completely leaves out the entire fact that he allied with the hamitic tribes and philistines against israel, conquered israel, forced his rule over israel and they broke free a few generations later with the help of the shemite brothers from elam. Also you refer to this as the start of judaism but i would strongly disagree. judah only become a thing in the 8th century and u just said that israel was mentioned by the egyptians in the 14th century. Not the same kingdom. You have completely omitted the facts and skipped over the story. your videos are propaganda not based on history fact.

Interesting point, but I would argue that omission of some facts does not account as propaganda. Of course, you will say your facts are the most important, but considering the sheer number of comment asking for information that has been omitted to be included, I would argue that difficult decisions on what to include and what not to include were probably made. In any case, do you not think propaganda is slightly overexaggerating? Also, from the points you make it is presumed there is a dispute over the facts. However, do you not think the team merely tried to put forward the most accurate facts they could find supported by the most evidence. If I am wrong, do you not agree that the word propaganda may be unhelpful if the team actually just failed to realise you were right and made an innocent mistake. I don't know, just offering some possible solutions?

I have a few friends who have work as archaeologists in Israel. From what I understand, while there is at present no concrete archaeological evidence for the existence of either David or Solomon, it is not at all clear that they were fictional. Just a few decades back most archaeologists believed that a united Israelite kingdom never existed, but as more evidence comes to light, more are conceding that there is a good chance it did. Archaeology is hardly an exact science and it will be a while before we know for sure whether David and Solomon were historical or mythical. However, it is surprising how closely this video is sticking to the biblical narrative. I don't mind per se, but it is odd.

Why didn't you write that the "sea people" were called "Filistines" and had their own territory for several decades called "Palastine" that had nothing to do with modern-day arabic identification of "Palastinians"? However you do write specifically things like "Israeli conquest" that makes me believe you are already biased toward the arabic-narrative side, and not being completely objective.

Francia is the origin of the word "France" which means land of the "Franks" who had their own territory for several hundred years in the Low Countries and have nothing to do with modern "French" people who live in "France" and speak a Romance language. Like the Palestinian connection to the Filistines, it is a question of distant ancestry and name origin. Am I biased toward modern Romance-speaking French people without being objective to the position of people from the Low Countries? Do the modern French not actually exist? No.

I am surprised to see no mention of the most famous migration in Jewish history when Jacob took his sons and left to Egypt to live under Joseph's wings. This is agreed upon historically and in all abrahamic religious texts. The Israelites left their land to escape famine only to be taken slaves after Josephs era. When David met Goliath, the Philistines were defending their home from the invading Ex-Slave Hebrew tribe who "wandered the desert for 40 years". Right?
