In 1997, I had the pleasure of a contact with Jerry Linenger (KC5HBR) aboard the Russian MIR. They were using R0MIR as event call back then. Also said hello to one of the cosmonauts before they cleared the horizon. I used my HTX-202 5 watt HT and a simple homemade Copper ground plane.

Sounded like Astronaught Woody Hoburg...when the Astronauts (NA1SS) are on the air after they answer your call you just listen to others that are trying to contact them. It's a rare occasion when NA1SS actually jumps on the FM Repeater...Congrats! I ended up making 4 QSOs with Woody Hoberg too last year!

Yaesu FT-3D for transmitting 145.990 MHz with 67 Hrz PL tone, Icom T8A for receiving starting at 437.810 MHz dropping 5 KHz through the pass. 437.805, 437.800, 437.795, and 437.790 at end of pass. You can use any dual band radio and antenna with some success. But the Arrow 2 yagi and 2 radios is the easiest way to do it.

Bravo and Whiskey are part of the NATO Phonetic Alphabet (letters B and W). Sometimes when you try to spell a word, the letters sound the same over radio. If you had callsign N0BDP, it could be very hard to understand. Instead you say November Zero Bravo Delta Papa to make sure the other person understands the spelling clearly.
