I guess many of us think that he wasn't able to wish her because of his ego. But that's not true. It's not ego. He's just not used to greeting anyone. And when somebody stops greeting people for like 14 years(assuming before the incident in Sheesh Mahal, at least he used to wish his Di and family), they don't know how to greet anyone anymore. They become emotionally numb. And when the same person started to feel those emotions to such an intensity that Khushi stirred in him, breaking those walls, hate cultivating in him for the misunderstanding and when it cleared, the guilt was too much, and again that stirred a lot of emotions in him, he just didn't use to let them out, piling all of it inside his heart. And when he knew it was her birthday, he just didn't know how to wish her. He is not used to it. He tried because he wanted to wish her anyhow. If he wants to do that, he can but for that, he needs a lot of push from inside, battling with the various range of emotions he struggles with within him. And when he wasn't able to do that, he'd cry hiding from everyone, just like Arnav did when Khushi slept, wishing for her wholeheartedly and his eyes moistened because he knew Khushi wanted just a single wish and he wasn't able to do that for her even. It hurt him a lot too, for not being able to wish her, fulfil her wish of wishing her. He's just struggling with his own emotions after being emotionally numb for so long. It's common. Nothing to do with one's ego or pride or success.

Whatever they say that khushi is not their biological daughter, but they love her more than payal. Arnav and khushi are always at bua ji's place. Love the bond between Arnav and khushi's family.
