Women's football has gone through so many changes in it's relatively short history. With some nations banning the concept for varying periods of time, to now being one of the largest growing sports in the 2020's. Despite these huge advances, there are still several key areas that are not keeping up with the ever-growing spectacle of the game. Players are getting bigger injuries due to the increasing fixture schedule and lack of knowledge of female physiology, negative effects to people's mental health, misogyny across the industry, and generally a lack of respect towards the women in football that have been doing incredibly well in developing the game for spectators and young girls and women hoping to get involved in football.
This video project is my take on the current issues in the sport, highlighting the problems and what could be done to improve the situation, pushing it closer to the level the men's game is on at this moment.
This is something that I have been working on for over a month. Researching, recording and editing a video of this size has been one of my biggest projects on the channel, but I felt compelled to talk about a subject that has become a huge part in my consumption of football.

The first women's football match was in Edinburgh Scotland in May of 1881. During the first and second world wars, women all over the UK played matches to paying crowds and the funds went to the war effort.

I have watched some US high school games on YT involving girls and boys playing on artificial american football pitches and the number of injuries for the girls seem to far outnumber the ones i have seen for the boys. Nearly all of the games have had to be stopped at some point for an injury. Some of them requiring stretchers. I have also seen games with their non playing teammates on crutches as well. From what i can make out, it is due to the surface used, and the girls incorrect way of tackling . Some seem to think they can just shoulder charge an opponent to gain possession of the ball, like in ice hockey. Some of the refereeing seem to allow it at times too which doesnt help. For me the coaching at this level needs to improve to prevent all of this unnecessary charging around that happens in the younger female game. In the US at least.

My main issue is who is 'women's' football marketed to? Is it other women? Or is it men who already have an interest in a thriving, better, more refined version in the men's game? I struggle to see how men should care about the women's game just like we are not obliged to care about Netball for instance, which is a women's game for sure. And I'm not saying the women suck or i hste them, but to me it just feels like they are trying to validate their sport by using the preexisting male audience.

I agree they should get paid like men, but only when they bring in the revenue to pay for it. Contrary to what people say a handful of games are sellouts, they said the fa cup this year was sold out when you could see empty seats and official attendance was 78 thousand in a 90 thousand capacity stadium. Most champions league matches don't sell out. In an interview in Australia Rhonda Rousey UFC fighter was asked about equal pay, she replied they don't run a charity they pay her the big money because she brings the attendance and viewers. They should be paid based on the money they bring in and not just because they play football regardless of skill level. You can be paid more when there's more money to pay them with. Womens football has a long way to go still and locking many games behind sky's paywall won't help them gain new fans or viewers.

@@1Alex117 All countries need to implement a youth system such as what is present in Europe, coaching from former pros at a very young age. The issue with women's football is that it is an afterthought by male clubs at this point trying to cash in on it quickly. Clubs are seeing it as a quick cash grab and it will not be taken seriously until it has a long and storied history like the men's game. Women are seen as having had this handed to them, men had to play for decades before it became financially beneficial for them. They can't come to the scene this late(professionally) and expect parity when they don't earn as much revenue as men's teams, but they should never expect world class wages for a level of football that is equal to the 5th tier of English football or lower. They shouldn't expect elite wages for non-elite levels of play.

They will get elite facilities and top level pay when the game brings in money to fund that. The men's game shouldn't have to subsidize the female game. Men get paid more because they generate more revenue. The last men's world cup made $4B the last women's world cup made 1/50th of that.

Resources should be invested in it to help grow the women's game. That could be through the men's game, but governing bodies such as FIFA, UEFA, and other confederations have a duty to help grow the game across the world. There is still a lot of untapped potential in women's football from the player quality and infrastructure that will close the gap.

@@jaffajackson7277 Women want to make it without the help of men and they shouldn't be using funds that they didnt generate to elevate their game. That would be like a cleaner at a multinational company expecting bonus' on par with investors. You get paid and get training facilities based on revenue. Women's sports is a joke, did you the the WNBA actually makes losses and is propped up by the NBA? If women athletes want equal pay, it's not gonna happen until they find their own audience and sell out every game like men do.

@@jaffajackson7277 FIFA and UEFA get their money from the mens game, but it isn't the governing bodies job to do that. It is the job of individual FA's to booat the coaching quality. But even then it will not match up to the mens games strength and intensity because biology.

It would be healthier for everyone if we focused on women's strengths and help women shine in those areas more. I'm not against women doing physical things for fun or to stay healthy but women are simply not built for this type and intensity of physical strain. Some may do relatively well, but it will never be on the level of men's football. It actually hurts women to pretend professional women's football is a good thing. The mental/emotional aspects mentioned in the video are another example of why this is not good for women. Women are, in general, more emotional and social than men and will likely suffer more when put under the same amount of emotional pressure as a man. Let's let women be women for everyone's sake.

I think every women has the right to pursue elite sports. One of the key issues I speak about in the video is the lack of resources and knowledge around female athletes and their physiology. The non-specialized equipment coupled with the increase in high-level competitions means (like in other sports across men and women) will lead to being more susceptible to injury. Once more information and data is collected regarding these things, the chances of injury should decrease. We are seeing an uptake in injuries in the men's game as well. That goes towards the mental side of the game as well. If clubs, leagues, organizations, and confederations provide resources and guidance to female athletes than they can thrive and become professional players, just like how young boys aspire to be. We have seen many successful female athletes across other sports, so why not in football?

@@jaffajackson7277 I think some women could be moderately successful, just like I think some men could be moderately successful in traditionally female jobs/tasks an I'm not looking to stop anyone from pursuing their aspirations. It's more of a question whether or not we should societally encourage it. I think men and women are equipped for their unique roles in society and I fail to see a reason to push either away from playing into their natural strengths.

@@winterbear8633 Personally I believe in equal opportunity regardless of gender. I think the landscape nowadays is different, being able to pursue jobs and hobbies we would be judged on. Equal opportunity is an amazing thing, and saying to one gender to not pursue something because it isn't societally optimal seems backwards today.

@@jaffajackson7277 While I think the intention behind that is very noble, all people are born different and thus, nature itself grants us different opportunities (inequality of opportunity). For example, you have a talent for making videos and I have different talents. I could become a decent video maker if I put enough time into it but I would be better at something I'm built for (and most likely I'd be happier too) That being said, I think no one should be stopped from pursuing what they want to do as long as it's not immoral. My point wasn't to discourage certain behavior, but rather not encourage certain behavior, so to keep it neutral. That way, I believe most people will follow their nature and let the chips fall where they may. I believe our hearts are both in the right place but we just differ ideologically. Glad we could have a mature conversation about this!

Obviously women can't be as explosive as men, that's just basic biology; testosterone. I think a lot of the bitterness towards women's football stems from a lot of it being thrown in peoples faces, it's the same with the LGBT stuff; it's very heavy handed and unnecessary but that's just corporations banking on trends. It's not Women's or the LGBT communities fault so you shouldn't direct that anger towards them. Women's football can be great if you base it on it's on merit; me and my stepdad watch it from time to time, it's still a lot of fun and we should absolutely be encouraging young women to commit more to sport; it's so much healthier than social media and other predatorial time sinks that are mainly targeted towards women. This is one area where they just can't seem to win, men complain about the latter but when they're striving to encourage objectively healthier hobbies/passions they still complain; let them have this and we should support them. It'll only get better with time
