Went into guitar center last month for the first time in a couple years. I was clueless about current market prices for new models from the big names. $1400+ for the bottom of the barrel bog standard models from Gibson and Fender and decent quality strat customs starting around 2.5-4k!?! Gibson's definitely demanding higher prices. The high wall really nice stuff covered in $6-8k guitars?!? Like whut??? In this economy? They're smokin crack!!! 😆 If I hadn't seen that with my own eyes I would've thought the deals and prices for your swap was crazy. I'd say you did good. You threw in all those extras and it was a real great condition 70's strat. He got a good quality strat he can make a good sale on in his store to the right person. That Les Paul looks to be an easy $3.5-4k turn around in todays model prices.

Great deal. I may be biased as I am not a huge Strat fan (I hate bolt-on necks, it’s like reaching under a girl’s skirt and finding a coq! They also sound very banjo like to me). On the other hand Gibson have significantly raised their prices… that Les Paul would have cost $2200 new a few years ago, I don’t think you will get $2500 for it, probably $2000 to $2200. You got what $350 in cash? So that puts you at $2350 to $2550 and frankly your Strat was worth more than that given the asking price for the 2 same year and model at the other booths. I also think, at guitar shows, everyone is looking for “a deal”. Personally I would put it for sale on Reverb for $2800, taking home $2625 or more after fees and shipping costs (provided you offered free shipping, I tend to personally). Could you have made out better financially? Yes but it would have 1.) taken longer and 2.) more hassle. By the way, one thing you didn’t say that I think is worth mentioning is dealers with booths will usually act like something is not special or act like it is near worthless WHEN something is nice, it’s a tactic to wear down the seller. They do this when they want it, but they want it super cheap and you’re expected to sell for less because “hey buddy I gotta make profit” that’s not our problem so feck that noise LOL

the cowhide esquire with the plain looking headstock is modeled after leo fender's early prototypes that were made between 1945 and 1949, they had that 3 on each side headstock and the volume/tone knobs with no selector and were called 'snakeheads' since the headstock looked sort-of like the head of a snake.

I would think a Guitologist Reverb store would do really well... I know packing and shipping aren't fun, but I would think your audience would pay a premium for your gear where as the average reseller buyer at a swap meet would want to offer bottom dollar. I'm all about the used market shitting the bed for a few years. I held off from buying anything during the the guitarmageddon that was going on as a result of the Covid lockdowns beyond necessities: like strings, cables, etc. There were a couple guitars, an amp and several preamps and pedals. I have one of the guitars. It's 3 years old, and i got it for 60% of the price new. I was seeing them selling for like $50 off the retail and i just refused to do it, in spite of being able to buy it. The other guitar's price has dropped dramatically too, but I'm putting that off for a couple years. I wanted to pick up an Egnater Rebel 20. I had one years ago and i remember it was awesome for slaving preamps and modelers. You can run it from 20W down to 1W, or switch between 6V6's to EL84s. It wasn't even that bad of a price, considering the absurd prices of everything else, but i held off and ended ponying up $60 more 10 months ago, for the Rebel and a 15W Tweaker 12" combo. I sold cars for several years before i started working on guitars and amps. It doesn't matter if it's guitars and amps, pedals, or a mid-sized crossover SUV; i don't mind paying what something is worth. Sometimes, for various reasons, the price of something will spike. Maybe a component is suddenly unavailable and they no longer build them in that form, or maybe someone sees it on John Mayer's pedalboard and the price goes up. Covid created a widespread, but predictably temporary large increase in demand. People were locked in their homes for a year with nothing but time and enhanced unemployment benefits on their hands. Eventually that would end, followed shortly by a lot of gear suddenly starting to they the used market. -Sunrise, sunset.-7 I do feel for the independent shops getting squeezed.

I'm an uninformed buyer , but so many of these shows seem to be full of inventory but the demand side looks thiner , and the demographics always look similar, if the totality of Gen z/x is starring at a phone , where does all of this inventory end up , and add to that the new instrument pipeline is running at 100% , just a bit perplexing , interesting landscape

My advice, after nearly 50 years buying and selling guitars as an active player in gigging bands is this: Buy what you like to play. Don't speculate financially on guitars that you wouldn't or don't like playing. If you don't like the way Gibson Firebirds play or feel, don't collect one.

But immediately pulled out a Huge wad of cash from his Louis Vuitton bag and walked off with it…. It was amazing. The dude was about 6”7 with gigantic muscles. I talked to him after, super nice guy. . It was epic.

I got a 76 with no S. I think the transition was in the middle somewhere. The hardtails are usually lighter.

That LP you acquired was about as good a deal you'd get anywhere, with it being in Brand New Mint condition. It's a guitar I would love to own for sure! Good video🍻

That's how I've done business for over 45 years. Being self employed for over 32 years, I had 1 check/payment bounce, and that was rectified about a week later. Treat people how you want to be treated, do any work on your clients home as you would do in your own home, and do what you said you were going to do. No shortcuts, bait and switch, or white lies. Do your job, and you will be rewarded in life.

Ampegs are worth less because the tubes for most of them are no longer available.

@@TheGuitologist you starting a tube factory? Because changing the tubes to a different tube is exactly why ampegs are worthless. A 59 bassman converted to run el84’s isn’t worth crap.

For someone like me when I was hunting a swap meet in my teens in 92 and had zeeero funds. Would love to see you do a "find the cheapest deal in the show" on day 2. Whether it's a box project wreck in parts and pieces or a beat to hell late 80's honkin boat of a Hondo bass! LOL Only stipulation is it's all there so if put together it should work. You know the Ghetto Gig special. Cheapest dang deal at the show! Don't have to buy it just find it! LOL Maybe also the best value to dollar "best buy" Guitologist pick guitar. Same deal just give us a what you would hunt if it was for your personal enjoyment and a good value not necessarily welfare level but fair budget buy in today's market. Thanks man for walking the show for us. There's so many nice way over the top for my blood priced guitars out there at these shows today. Lot's of beautiful rare picks for the financially frivolous. Not too many nice in the hand and on the pocket book, a lil ruff on the eyes but soppin with mojo models these days. And is it seriously like not much less then 4 bills is the bargain bin price right now at a show like this???🤨 Left all the 1 bill wonders on the pawn shop wall I guess.😏 I know this is not a low end swap meet by any means but someones gotta have a few cheap beaters out there. Anyways, whatever tomorrow brings I'll be watching. Happy huntin.🤘👽

Those Spectra 225 amps were good sounding amps. My friend had a music store in the 80s and was a dealer for them. They were sold through Dean Markley. I wish I bought one of them. They also made tube amps.

I use to go to two or three vintage guitar shows a year and always had a great time searching for a guitar or two to bring home. Thanks for doing these videos Brad, I still enjoy looking at vintage guitars and amps, but can no longer get to the shows, or need to be bringing more guitars home.

Cool. I have my fathers Gibson 1960 ES355TDSV he bought for $600 as well as his Gibson GA55 Ranger RVT he bought in 1965. That amp weighs 78lbs and he hauled it around. The market does seem very soft right now.

just being honest, but the premium you're probably expecting due to the "light" weight isn't perceived as that high to justify the asking. but good luck!

MAN!! I love the idea of the Old'sCool guy's idea of a variable headroom knob. I'm sure I'm not repeating this idea correctly. But I've never heard anyone with something exactly as he's describing, and I know you can't really hear through a live video with a lot of background noise and using a camera microphone, but the idea intrigues me. I'd love to hear your thoughts on the idea. They say there's nothing new under the sun, but I suppose with technology that might not be true. Gimmick or possibly a good idea?

Yeah, as in…. I’m not going to share how I’m doing this with anyone. But honestly I can’t really blame him. I suppose that’s the chance you take buying from a little guy/boutique company. If it breaks, can you get it fixed if they’re out of business? Probably. But I certainly couldn’t. Brad probably could because he understands circuits. IDK….
