I like to think of the Leviathan (the big guy who eats you in the good ending) as kind of the ocean protector. In the bad ending, you summon Cthulhu and something that used to be your wife at the cost of the world. In the good ending you make the choice to spare the world, and the Leviathan eats you - the one with the knowledge of where the book is and how to use it - to make sure the world stays spared. I also liked encountering the Leviathan just swimming around the map while playing. It never attacked - though I know it does if you sail out of bounds.

The "Leviathan" also will randomly encircle your boat then attack you if you're at max paranoia if you're far enough out in any patch of open water even within bounds of the map, and you can use "banish" on it in that case. There's also a similar kill with a giant tentacle that comes out of the water and smacks you, a shark about the same size as the boat-anglerfish that charges you, and a swarm of either flying fish or birds that attacks your boat, though I've only seen that last one once. I wanna try to do a "no sleeping" run after the godawful amount of time I spent trying to randomly roll research parts for the research tree achievements.

Actually Gab, what you’re hearing aren’t eagles but hawks! Eagles have quiet cries in reality. In medias such as movies, programs, and video games, the eagle’s cry is replaced with a hawk’s cry. (The same way the “lion” roars in the Lion King are actually tiger roars!) The more you know! 💫

Gods, this game is just so powerful. Dredging up the past, how it can drive you insane, the choices to move on and their difficulty, coping with loss and the life of sailors and their families. Losing someone to the sea and having no one to blame but the ocean, but that ocean is your life, and if you blame it, you live in fear and isolation. Ah its just so damn good and relatable for someone like me who grew up around fishers, sailors, navy, and the balance of taking from the sea but not growing so ready that she takes back or takes you. Gods this game, it had me crying and enjoying!

The way they make you stay within the map is great too in this game as that same leviathan that kills you in the good ending starts hunting you. Fun fact. So there are still couple things I do not understand. The first one being that black goo that basically zombified that Dockworker. None of these creatures in the endings or the beasts/ bosses of each area really have a black goo to them so why is it a thing? Can you continue to talk to him through him after some time? He is constantly looking at the bottom of the sea so I would assume it is something for the endings. Are we the Old Fisherman? When you ask the Mayor about the fisherman before us who owned the boat, he talks likes he hates him. The old Fisherman was lazy, he would sleep all day and then be put all night and says that he is untrustworthy. Was that us when we found the book? When we lost our wife? There is four characters that know about the truth: the Lighthouse Keeper, the Old Mayor, the Collector, and our Wife.

Part of me is fairly convinced that these gaps and ambiguities are completely deliberate. If all loose ends are neatly tied up in a story, the whole sense of mystery and unease just evaporates. I played through this game before starting any of Gab's streams (damn, the first one was hard to not watch, as the game hadn't even been released at the time). Then started watching Gab's playthrough while doing another run myself. And in all three cases, the interpretation of the story is rather different. This, to me, is far more satisfying than a 'more satisfying' conclusion. If you see what I mean. 🤔

I live in California and the areas with the orange sky gave me flashbacks to when the Bay Area actually looked like that. At one point in 2020, wildfires were so bad and there was so much smoke in the atmosphere that it distorted the light and turned the sky that same orange. It was so unnatural that you couldn't take an accurate picture on your phone because it would try to color correct it. It really looked and felt like the apocalypse, so the game using that imagery for the Lovecraftian Horror areas was a great addition to the atmosphere.

Okay so here is my silly little interpretation of the story that’s most likely wrong Spoilers ahead! Okay so the main character is the husband described in the notes we find in the bottles, I have no clue how but somehow either him or his wife may have messed with some eldritch horror. Whatever took her caused that red book to appear and for a part of the main character to split off as a semi-self aware person who remembers the incident and knows enough to understand getting all of the relics would bring her back. The aberrations I think are caused by some sort of curse that comes from the red book just being out of the ocean, after the good ending the fog is lifted, the sky clears, and the sea calms. The book being handled may also cause the weird aberrant fish. Then there is what happens to someone who eats the aberrant fish, I think one of two things happen, the first idea I have is they get deathly ill and die for a couple of seconds and revive, but they come back different possibly possessed by the eldritch horror maybe? The fishmonger said something about a rumor, one where eating the aberrant fish grants immortality, but at the cost of not being in control of yourself possibly. Think of the sick dock worker, whatever package we gave to him leaked the same substance that was leaking from his mouth and ears. He was getting aggravated by our presence when we asked if he was alright. Maybe consuming the aberrant fish makes said person ill, maybe they don’t end up controlled by the eldritch horror but rather they see our character in a different light. Maybe they see us and remember something that we have long forgotten? The scientist that we meet says her sister was dead yet she finds those bottled messages in her handwriting, this may hint to some sort of time distortion that occurred upon her death, maybe some part of her exists outside her body like how the collector exists outside our main character. The scientist may actually be our sister in law but we don’t remember her and she may not really remember us. As far as the town goes I think we keep returning there in some sort of time loop or something like that. Maybe we keep dying, but come back every time with no memory. Maybe the town forgets us too to a certain extent, except the lighthouse keeper seems to remember. But how long have we been in this loop? How many times have we failed only to come back again? I do have a small theory that the lighthouse keeper may have been a part of our dead wife that split of during the incident trying to have us let go so both she and the main character can finally rest peacefully. Anyways I may be wrong and totally off the mark but if anyone has any ideas, criticism, or suggestions to add or alter this theory, feel free to add.

Here's a recap of how the whole thing panned out: Happy newlywed couple goes on a boat tour of a bunch of nice islands for their honeymoon (guy is a fisherman). Guy decides to be romantic and rename the boat with his wife's name but the ceremony must be done right or else it will bring "bad luck", however the wife doesn't really believe in that and fucks up by secretely keeping an item with the boat's old name. During a trip they have some first bad luck with part of their stuff falling into the water, so the husband sets up some "dredging equipment" and the couple gets into dredging stuff up from the depths looking for treasure. They dredge an old locked chest, open it, husband gets cursed (void in his eyes) while the wife starts getting chills and feeling bad: the chest was sealing an evil summoning book (think Necronomicon but related to sea monsters), a mysterious fog starts showing up everywhere. Leviathan (giant huge ass fish) destroys their ship possibly to try stopping the book from being read, wife drowns and is cursed under the ocean. Husband washes ashore alive, still holding the book but having lost everything and mourning his wife. The void takes shape as the "Collector", an alternate persona that erases his memories to ease him out of the pain. Time passes, meanwhile all sort of shit happens in the bay, monsters and krakens and the fog covers everything. Enter the "fisherman", which is actually the husband with memory loss, who gets employed by the Collector (his own cursed counterpart) to gather all the past relics of his wife to perform a resurrection ritual with the book. The wife is actually still cursed at the bottom of the sea, and can only communicate with the surface by sending some bottled messages we can find, hoping for the fisherman to throw the damn book away. The ritual works, wife is released from the sea, but the old god responsible for all the aberrations and monsters tags along. Or, alternatively, the fisherman(husband) does the right thing, let go of his grief, throws the cursed book back where it belongs, and then the Leviathan eats both so that no trace (cursed book and cursed owner) remain around.

People are missing that the main character was deliberately messing with the occult in the first place. The specifics of the renaming ceremony wasn't just to prevent "bad luck", it was an excuse for the wife to be oblivious to the fact the ceremony had very real magical purpose. But by not telling her, she messed it up accidentally believing it to just be silly superstition instead of life and death. He gets her killed, and in spite of having the power of the book that he wanted, he was now empty without her. The curse was caused by him. The Collector isn't just a manifestation, it's the curse he put on himself to make him forget about his own painful memories for long enough to hunt what he needed to resurrect her. In other words, who he was 20 odd years before, someone who was captivated by the occult so much he gave up his job as a fisherman in search of power. In a way the Collector is the protag confronting himself as the spell wears off in a delusional way, not a completely seperate entity.

what an amazing game tho i will say kinda wish they leaned a bit more into horror stuff at times like rewarding you in someway for going insane maybe more scary fish which is worth more a reason to be up late and so on. and ofc maybe just more visual stuff like a giant eye starring at you from underneath the ocean at night stuff like that just random encounters here and there that makes you nervous.

I'm usually not a fan of games that involves any fishing mechanic, but this one was an exception. They've mixed a lot of things in here, without detracting from its main premise. Plus, you're guaranteed a catch, once you move towards a particular spot in the waters. It encourages the collector in you, while exploring these islands that're rich with Eldritch lore. I'll miss this series.

This game has so much expansion and DLC potential. With map new areas, missions and fish. The leviathan is still out there and all kinds of stories could be developed that coukd follow on. I REALLY HOPE they extend this and deliver a Dredge II game.

I too spent a long time after that aberrant aurora jellyfish and I finally got it when I trawled around the OUTSIDE of the basin islands instead of around the interior. Almost immediately too once I went outside the islands. Not sure if it's an actual technique or just blind luck tho.

I've really enjoyed watching this series! I first heard about the game from a friend, then I saw Sean's vid on it and yours, and I got it immediately. You're so much braver than me lol, I've just now made it to Twisted Strand and I'm playing it soo slow because the night terrifies me! I love how it gets late and you're just like YOLO and go for it lol. I've also learned so many things from watching you play, like the spyglass and how the little boxes show up on your boat as you're collecting things. I'm not finished yet but it's quickly become one of my favorite games! So spoopy. Thanks for doing this series!

This was such a coooool game. Awesome vibes, and as short as they were, I loved the two endings. For our strange eldritch fisherman, perhaps being eaten by a beast of the sea was completing a circle. And for the other ending, he got what he wanted. And I have a feeling he knew what the consequences of that would be. I wonder what more can be done with the fake-out wreck creatures, the panic rocks, and what other spooky devices the… fish altars? have to offer- like the one that gave the Maw of the Deep in exchange for crabs.

Subscribed. This has been a delightful series. Dredge itself is chill and relaxing. Though, I like that you listen to comments, not just in your stream but also from KZfaq. That and writing notes has made for a frustration free and more put together experience. It's a breath of fresh air from other youtubers who just wing it. And it avoids the common but understandable pain point of viewers noticing something that the lets player overlooks because they(again understandably) have to play and talk. Thanks for the videos!
