Growing up in Preesall and my best friend living at Cote Walls Farm which is very close to the old railway line you walked along, I know the area well. A very interesting video, but if my friends father (now long passed!) had caught you wandering across his fields back in the day, you would have been in bother!

@@nodrog no worries, thanks for putting the time and effort in to tell these stories. Amazing how we spend half our lives passing these places without realising the fascinating and moving histories behind them.

Great video, really enjoyed watching. It reminded me of the one you did at Glosson docks but a quick look on google maps shows me that Glosson is further up the coast. Amazing that they went so deep to extract rock salt it must have seemed more economical back then I suppose Good luck from Spain!!

Brilliant ! this place has fascinated me since I was a kid. I visited once in the 70s , found a boarded over hole ,dropped a pebble down it, and had to wait ages for the faint splash, scary !

I led a geology group I belong to (GeoLancashire) on a field excursion round the salt mines which was mostly about the geological history of the site but also included a little of the industrial history. It would've been really helpful to have had access to your drone footage when summing up the day.... thanks for that research

As I’m watching this I’m fascinated that how rock salt was produced and how it created jobs which is now sad to see as it’s all gone. But very interesting information. Awesome video Nodrog. Keep up the good work.

In one way surprising about the collapse, there are salt mines that now store documents and other treasures, there's even one that has a lab, i guess those are well drained Not like Lake Peigneur in Louisianna where miners drilled into a salt mine, the amounts of stuff that got swallowed was huge, and caught on camera.

When I read up about Preesall, I found that the United Alkali company used their experience in Preesall to improve the mining techniques elsewhere, I think they made a lot of mistakes early on through lack of knowledge. I also expect the areas they operated (like Cheshire where I think you’re referring to) are very different environments.
@sparkyprojects

@@stewriley1183 I had to look it up, but yeah, one of the storage places is cheshire, i think there are others There's a lab at Boulby mine near Whitby, not sure if it's the same one i saw on a documentary

@@sparkyprojects knowing the geography of the Preesall area (very low lying and close to the sea), I guess it's probably not surprising in hindsight, especially using soluble material as support, but hindsight is always 20:20 as they say

In recent times they wanted to fill the salt caverns at Stalmine with Liquified Natural Gas. Given what’s happened with the war perhaps they should have done.

What could possibly go wrong? I suppose we'd finally learn what's in the hole after it gets redistributed across Wyre...
