If I had a choice between dissolving North Korea, Russia, any african dictatorship or the netherlands id dissolve the netherlands first. If I was in a room with two mustached dictators from the 1940s and Mark Rutte with a gun with 3 bullets in it I'd shoot Rutte 3 times.

So great to see your Marquis on the road in the Netherlands! I was so surprised to see your first video in Florida. The values on them have gone up here this year in the States (I'm in CA with a 2001 LS). I bought mine in 2013 for $3500 and it's probably worth around $7000 now--no intention of selling it. There's a cult following here of people who appreciate the Mercury Grand Marquis and the Ford Crown Victoria, especially govt and fleet cars. I say drive it around, get some good pictures, and get some Dutch guy to buy it in a few years, who'll really appreciate it. Maybe find some of the guys who are importing old US cars and fixing them up for resale and show up where they are. Someone in the comments was asking about display in Metric. Mine easily switches back and forth between Imperial and metric speedometer, odometer, trip odometer; they're all LED so no problem! I'm sure yours would be a popular addition to any old ,American car show. Film what the Dutch car lovers say about it. Have fun with it its a great daily driver.

Nice choice buying an Ultimate; might not have the Handling and Performance Package, but the 2.73 rear end will get better gas mileage, which is especially important where the car is now! I've been involved in a number of Single Vehicle Approvals (SVA) for Panthers in the UK, which is what they're required to go through before they can be registered. Often times the fog lamp had to be a certain height off the ground and they wanted it on the passenger side of the rear bumper, about an inch to the left of the tailpipe. They were also pretty picky about amber blinkers in the rear; most folks got '98-'01 Crown Victoria taillights, which had amber lenses on the bottom, but they just looked out of place. I like that you got the keep the red AND substitute one of your backup lights for a fog lamp! As for the side blinkers, someone I know in the UK with an '03 Grand Marquis was able to pass by converting the corner/courtesy lamps on the front markers to actual turn signals that would alternate between that and the factory blinker.
@Kerleem
@Kerleem 2 жыл бұрын

I'm surprised how much it cost. In Finland this would have been slightly cheaper. A few years ago (2018) the light law was deleted in Finland. Every American car can now use original lights. If imported over 30 years old car, it is the most cheapest (almost free, old cars get usually about 100€ taxes). Under 30 years old cars get more taxes. A newer car always gets a little more tax. I want to see more videos this Mercury! This car is probably boring daily driver in the USA but amazing car in the Europe.😃This Mercury could have ended up in a scrapyard in the future (in USA), but now it got an eternal life in Europe! The some day I was looking at European car sales websites. I'm was surprised how many old Ford Crown Victoria police interceptors are in Netherlands, Germany and Poland. @6:20 that's an important thing you said right there... I am thinking about importing a car as well, or buying one tat has been imported already. One factor is sourcing one that has not been heavily modified. Germany is not the country to go: they require amber lights and fog lights. Luxembourg does not require either modifications but it's a small market. Also Germany (and Luxembourg) coat their roads with salt in winter. What about the Netherlands? Steel frames hate brine!

@@tr33c21 Why would they salt the roads above 34C?
@MrNicoJac
@MrNicoJac 2 жыл бұрын
We use a lot of salt on the roads in the winter here. We do not actually see much snow, usually. But we see a lot of around-freezing temperatures. Combined with morning dew, the result can be roads that are safe at night but unsafe during rush hour. So salt usually gets dropped daily before rush hour, in those months. (depends on how green or conservative your municipality is though) In general, I'd say that salt corrosion is *definitely* something to be aware of and keep an eye on. Especially if your replacement parts have to be one-time ordered from across the ocean.... Secondly, if you live or drive within ~30 miles of the sea, sea spray can coat your car in a tiny layer of salt even in summer! (although it's usually stormy weather that blows the top of the waves inland, aka early autumn or late spring) It's not toooo bad (our cars survive, somehow), it's just something that _will_ bite you if you ignore it completely :)
@MrNicoJac
@MrNicoJac 2 жыл бұрын
@@ThatManitobaGuy We do NOT salt the roads above 34°C 😂👍🏼 (in fact, since those salt machines don't do anything for most of the year, many local governments saved money by having fewer of them - which meant that we had to ask Germany to come save our asses when we had surprisingly harsh winter weather a few years back😅)

Great video! At 6:10 you talk about side markers that have to be installed? But isn't it the other way around? Like, in europe they are not mandatory, but in US they are, right? Oh nevermind, at 8:20 you mean the side turn signals ;) Also, nice to see they've hidden the foglight at one of the reverselight places. That looks alot better than some generic square axilery light they place under the bumper sometimes. By the way, are you going to use this car daily, or just for a fun drive on the weekends? Also, maybe for a future video, could you do one that compares ownership costs of this car, comparing US and Dutch? So like Fuel costs, roadtax, insurance, annual inspection, etc. Keep it up! :D

Here you go: about 90 euros per month road tax, without haven driven a mile. Mine is registered somehow at a lower weight so lucky me I'm paying only 70 bucks a month. Gas here is 7.70 USD per gallon, so a full tank of gas sets me back about 140 euros (that's about 140 USD as well). Yearly inspection is not that expensive, like 40 or 50 euros. Insurance not bad either at about 35 a month for me. Parts are not too expensive either but they have to be imported from the US which makes em at least twice as expensive (shipping), plus import tax. So yeah I would say, it's not too bad... But hey, I'm used to our high taxes here lol. A panther in the US is much cheaper!

It is interesting how different rules are across Europe to import and register non-EU cars. I did not have to get an official CO2 measurement for my truck (though truck pay road tax based on "tonnage"). Cars that don't have an official CO2 measurement pay road tax based on their engine displacement in Luxembourg. I noticed the whole car bounced like jello when you reversed just, like my truck :) I love how quiet body-on-frame vehicles can be due to the fact that the engine is not directly connected to the body and ... your seat. I'd personally going for an Imperial Lebaron or Chrysler New Yorker from the mid-seventies. I suppose those are not common in the US either especially in good conditions. Can you register it soon as a classic car in the NL and pay even cheaper road tax and insurance?

@Kerleem
@Kerleem Жыл бұрын
There are a few reasons, you can google it for more but basically, even though Europe and the US calculate octane ratings differently, Euro95 is about the equivalent of 91 at the pump in the US which is considered "Super" or "premium" fuel in the US (91 or 93 is usually the highest grade of fuel at a normal fuel pump). The standard fuel is 87 octane in the US. Usually only luxury or sports cars require premium fuel in the US. Aside from that, the US has been using 10% ethanol in fuel for a long time (maybe 10+ years) whereas this is relatively new in Europe and some older cars here need an additive (which usually isn't the case in the US). So yeah, the fuel quality this car is getting here is much better than it would in the US.

How do you like the US headlamps on your Grand Marquis? Does it have the automatic load adjustment (as mandated in Europe to compensate for the load)? The headlamps on the US market Ford products are so horrendous and hardly qualify as "headlamps". I've talked with the Germans who own the Panther cars with composite headlamps. They told me the headlamps are so bad that some of the owners made the modifications. Some use the headlamp bezels from the work trucks so they could use the 200mm ECE headlamp capsules. Others get lucky with aftermarket ECE headlamps designed specifically for their vehicles (mostly F-Series models). A few took the clear-lensed US headlamp housing apart to insert the ECE headlamp capsules from other vehicles inside the housing.

Are you planning on converting it to LPG? Many US cars in NL are running on LPG. It does increase your road tax but the price per liter is a lot lower so you'd have to make the calculation if its worth it. Also if you're planning on taking it on roadtrips, l know there are certain countries in Europe that do not allow LPG cars in underground/multi storey carparks due to (outdated) fears of explosions so that might also be something to consider. Alternatively you can wait till its 25 years old and use the "oldtimer regeling" where it becomes road tax exempt and the APK will only have to be done once every 2 years. I don't think LPG cars qualify for that so it might be better to bite the bullet for the next 5 years or so till it qualifies for tax exemption. If you're even planning to stay in NL that long haha.

At 3:40 you can see the size of the American car and the size of the parking spots in The Netherlands. Those two are not a great match. I see at 8:40 that the delivery van in the back has about the same measurements. It doesn’t fit in a single parking spot. On busy parking lots that would be a problem.

The Mercury is 5385 mm Long and 1986 mm Wide (excluding mirrors) For comparison, a Tesla Model S (common car in NL) is 4980 mm Long and 1,964 mm Wide (excluding mirrors), so it's only a little longer than a Model S. So yes, it's large, but there are other European-market sedans close in size.

@Kerleem
@Kerleem 6 ай бұрын
Well they probably are not going to be banned anytime soon. There are many benefits for allowing imported cars, and generally they are imported and sold by enthusiasts in small numbers (in relation to general purpose vehicles). I prefer amber turn signals in the rear as well, but the Netherlands (and some other Euro countries) allows red turn signals, actually, so that's something to take up with the Dutch government.

@MrNicoJac
@MrNicoJac 2 жыл бұрын
@@Kerleem I doubt that a US car would be cheaper to own or maintain in the EU (and especially in the Netherlands). Maintenance will presumably be more expensive due to part scarcity. And ownership will absolutely be more expensive due to worse fuel efficiency and higher environmental taxes. But I also see more imported cars on the road than I'd expect. Sometimes it's a big truck, and in that case I think there's just no European alternative that offers so much load capacity (without resorting into a semi-truck). So I suppose those cars could be useful for plumbers and the like. Other than that, I suspect the main reason for US cars would be expats who just want _some_ thing to feel familiar...? And there's something to be said for getting adjusted to a new road network without _also_ having to adjust to a new vehicle simultaneously - both safety and just convenience wise. But hey, I'm not an expat, nor a US car importer. So maybe I'm woefully wrong 🤣
