Facts. I was off for 20yrs. I don't have the ability I used to, but I remembered basics and mechanics of old tricks. Just harder to get my body to follow my brain.
@PHeMoX

That definitely depends on your skill level when you quit skating though. And actually, you _will_ lose tricks along the way. Usually just because you stop doing them versus learning new tricks and doing those more often. I don't doubt things like kick flips and tre flips will come back when you used to do them. But at the same time when still learning it's so easy to lose the basics.

similar experience: picked up skating after 15 plus years off. got all my (few) tricks back in weeks and learning new ones since. also the skaters who never stopped are very welcoming and supportive.

Yep, kind of. Took a good 25yrs break and when I jumped back on it in April I could still pump and roll pretty good - no tricks whatsoever though. Then in a few months got my ollie back and have been improving slowly as well as trying new things like transition. One thing for sure is that I got the bug again and have no plans to stop.

I appreciate this positive outlook, George. I got back in to skating about a year ago right as Covid was taking off. I hadn’t skated in well over 10 years. I would beat myself up for not being able to do basic flat ground stuff that I could pull off with my eyes closed back in the day or even pull a high and clean ollie. I’ve gotten a little better and have grown comfortable with the board under my feet but I’m still not getting flip tricks back just yet and I’m learning to be ok with that. I’ve spent that time trying to get better at transition skating, even if it’s just dropping in and carving around a 6ft bowl without any lip tricks. That’s still more than I did as a kid because transition just wasn’t as cool back then. It was all about throwing yourself down a massive stair set or gap. Anyway, you are spot on about finding why you love skateboarding and for me it’s all about catharsis and the meditative state it can put you in. Keep up the awesome work man, All the best!

Ancient Shart sounds like something my grandpa does... Anyway, damn I needed this video. Thank you, George. The seshs were awesome af! That Nollie flip was STEEZY. Lately I have been skating with a friend who rips and its been helpful in some ways, cause he hypes me tf up, but also I tend to compare myself to him. (despite the fact he's been skating for 10+ years and I have been skating for maybe 2) regardless its so much nicer to skate *with* someone. I also always try to keep the mantra of "anytime I even push around I'm progressing because I'm getting more comfortable. Hope you're staying safe and sane! much love, Otis

Sick Prius, George! I got an 07' yellow one back in may and I love it. Also, skateboarding is one of those things where you want to get better. The only way you get better is just genuinely having fun. I noticed when I get hurt or burnt out is when I'm not having fun progressing. If all you wanna do is pop sum Ollies and cruise some transition, that's fine, as long as you're enjoying yourself.

I can relate with the aggravation of taking breaks. I f***ed my ankle this past summer and had to lay off any tricks for around two months. i still can't kickflip better than the first day i landed it over a year ago. i find that mellow transition is the best way to get back into skating after a break (especially after an injury) though because it doesn't take as much effort from your ankles and your feet in general.

I think these emotions your feelings have a lot to do with making your passion your profession. There’s a real stress and consequence to work, money, time. I’m a glassblower (15 years) and at times I feel like I get worse. I haven’t worked for myself in years and I can feel it. It’s one of my passions but, it’s become an obligation. This year hasn’t helped either. But, I started skating in June, and it’s helped my head a lot. Btw, I suck at skateboarding. Thank you for being so open with the world.

I feel like there’s a good positive vibe entering skateboarding lately. When I started skating in the late 90’s I could pretty safely say there was a toxic mentality. There were pretty strict rules as to what tricks you could and couldn’t do, what clothes you could wear. And there was an unspoken insinuation that if you weren’t up to a certain level of skill within a few years of starting then you were wasting your time. As a “not so good” skater in the late 90s early 00s I definitely got called a poser a lot. Just started again this year and can happily say that the scene has definitely loosened up a lot. Happy to see kids and old people doing no complies and slappies and just vibing. Looking forward to skating as an old man in this apocalypse with y’all.

from october to april i cant really skate because of wet weather 24/7, around this time every year i have such anxiety that im gonna forget all my tricks and be worse than the previous summer but no matter what i always end up learning a new trick or too organically and just rolling with friends is what its about! its like riding a bike...

I’m the same way with productivity. I feel the need to progress EACH week. No full days off.

Came at a useful time because I was stuck in the same mindset of constantly trying to be productive and it was taking the fun out of skating because I’d be disappointed if I didn’t skate as hard as I wanted to, hopefully looking at it as an escape from that will help

I just gripped my board myself for the first time and I literally had to tell myself after I finished "its ok that this sucks" lol

my very first grip was actually 10x better than my 2nd and 3rd because on both of those secondary attempts i had nothing sharp enough to cut it and the sound of my board looked like mount everest

Totally agree, skating is meant to be a fun pastime. No time for haters and their rules for what makes someone a "real" or "good" skateboarder based on their ability, their setup, their sponsors (or lack of), how/why they're popular, etc etc.
