He was up there with Benny Hill at his peak. The opening scene of him with the window illusion joke is burnt into my childhood memory.

Benny Hill was awful, the worst of British humour smut. Harry was far more talented

Thanks for this, he was a sweet uncomplicated character and sorely missed, I'm 74 now and I still whenever the chance arises do the window scene for my 9 year old nephews, it is timeless but unrecognised these days, I dont know why but there it is.

I can remember seeing him at the Brighton Hippodrome at the very end of music hall in about 1965. The entire theatre was helpless with laughter at a well-meaning character who seemed to be terminally confused and helpless. Brilliant.

I used to love Harry Worth. When I heard that he'd died I was only 33 and I mentioned it to my work colleagues and their reaction was "never heard of him!"

Born in the picturesque town of.......Barnsley I was too young to see his early work. All I remember was that pic of him with the shop window to explain symmetry in a school maths textbook, and a BBC sitcom called O Happy Band in the early 80s i think

I was surprised to hear an American voice narrating this video, Harry Worth was so English. This would have been excellent if not for very poor editing which resulted in needless repetition throughout, a major weakness it many other videos of this kind. However it was very informative. I didn’t realise Harry Worth had been in a David Croft comedy series. Harry Worrh went to ITV because the BBC decided not to make any more comedy series with him, as you said the comedy landscape was changing . His ITV shows were less successful. I remember him appearing on the Royal Variety and doing his ventriloquist act, the entire show that year was easily one of the best and he helped to make it so. You are right he deserves to be better remembered

Worth decided to leave the BBC. He spent 10 years travelling backwards and forwards to Manchester and his home in Hertfordshire often not returning till 4am after live shows (didn't like hotels). When ITV came knocking offering what was then a fortune he accepted. Jonny Amonds was particularly upset. Worth himself personally regretted leaving the BBC, but did go back to the BBC for Radio and TV shows in 1980 up until his death in 1989

Thank you for this, I did get the impression that the BBC had not renewed Harry Worth’s contract, so it’s nice to have this information. The ITV shows were not as good as his work at the BBC

When you covered Charlie Drake a day or two ago I thought of Harry Worth - both seemed to sum up 60s tv sitcoms and one or other was always on the air. Funny moments but generally - even as a young lad - to largely dross

Harry Worth is 1960's, not 1970's as stated. By 1970, he was yesterday's news. Benny Hill displaced Harry Worth completely in his own milieu. Where Benny Hill left off, Dick Emery or (standup) Les Dawson took over. No room any more for H.W.

1970s was huge for Worth, becoming one of Britain's highest paid comedy actors. Along with Radio and Theatre he headlined the following TV shows - My Name is Harry Worth, 30 Minutes Worth, How's Your Father and Oh! Happy Band (1980)

Illingworth is a suberb of Halifax in West Yorkshire. The shop window scene at the beginning of Harry's show was done in Manchester. Othe famous people from Barnsley are, former talk show host Michael Parkinson, former wrestler and actor Brian Glover and former cricket umpire Harold "Dickie" Bird.

There was an incident between Wilson and Worth on the night of the Kennedy assassination. Whilst the night in question was awful Worth accidentally created comedic confusion between the pair. I think perhaps the person putting the video together unintentionally left the incident out

I never found him funny. His material was very childish and when he came up with phrases like "My name is Harry Worth, I don't know why, but there it is" and this got a laugh - we suspected it was a canned laughter track. My father at the time said "He just isn't funny". At the same era we had Dickie Henderson; Benny Hill, Stanley Baxter and Dick Emery all of whom were more professional. But that's my opinion so don't take me too seriously. He just wasn't our type of comic.
@tomsidford2107

Comedy as life is subjective. Worth never once uttered the phrase My name is Harry Worth, I don't know why but there it is. It was Mike Yarwood who used the line.
