Playthrough Rules:
1. Only my starter in battle
2. No items in battle (except held items)
3. No glitches or exploits*
4. No Double-Team TM before level 100*
Other rules:
-- My Pokemon have perfect genetics to ensure fair comparison between species.
-- *Pokeballs & Pokedolls are allowed in battle
-- *The badge-boost glitch is not restricted at all
-- *Skipping the Rocket Hideout & Marowak is allowed
-- I play the game at 4x game speed (238 frames per second)
-- My Pokemon has perfect DVs
-- The bike is allowed
-- Skipping the bike is not allowed
-- Saving between league members is allowed
-- If the solo Pokemon faints and I choose to blackout it counts towards my reset counter
-- I can pause the game & timer to take breaks
-- The footage is sped up / slowed down to match the pace of my narration
*Double-Team:
-- Almost every Pokemon can learn Double-Team through TM
-- The TM can be purchased in Celadon
-- Using it would centralize the meta
-- Every Pokemon would use it to overcome tough battles at lower levels
-- It raises evasion
-- It triggers the badge boost
-- Banning the TM allows Pokemon who learn it through level up to use it
-- I believe evasion is part of Pokemon and shouldn't be banned entirely
-- I don't want the videos to all be double-team spam though, that's not fun or entertaining
Terms:
-- STAB
-- Same-Type-Attack-Bonus - a 1.5x damage multiplier
-- Stat Experience
-- The Gen1&2 equivalent of effort values. You can invest in all stats until they max
out at 65535
-- DVs or Determinate Values
-- The Gen1&2 equivalent of IVs (individual values), these range from 0-15
Resources:
-- Gen 1 Stat Calculator: pycosites.com/...
-- All Trainer Pokemon have IVs (DVs) of 89888 (hp, atk, def, spd, spc)
-- All Trainer Pokemon have EVs of 0
-- Gen 1 Crit Rates: www.smogon.com...
-- Crit rate is determined by dividing base speed by 512
-- High crit rate moves determine their rate by dividing base speed by 64
-- All crits have a 1/256 to fail, even if the rate is 100%
-- Crits don't multiple damage by 2, it's a formula based on level

Great run! Here's a fun Gen 2 interaction for you: Belly Drum is actually programmed to call Swords Dance's effect 6 times, but for some reason the first Swords Dance goes off before the HP check. So if your Belly Drum fails due to low HP, you'll still get a +2.

Careful you don't start throwing runs because hidden power + return is so good and everyone can use it. If you're looking for the fastest times, and those moves are needed to get them, then use them if they are the best options. Wouldn't want to see caveats on times because you didn't use a move that would've been the best option because you wanted to do a weaker option just to mix things up.

It's sort of incredible how Snorlax doesn't care about being slow at all. I honestly figured that it couldn't reach S tier rank because of its base speed but seeing as it was very close, I was surprised. Still, it makes sense that Espeon would have a higher rank because it just annihilates most targets before they can even move, cutting its time significantly.

Scott ! Gen 2 trivia Belly drum has a weird quirk where if you use it when you have less than half health technically only fails to MAX your attack but it gives you a +2 in ATT (MY GUESS it programed to give you multiple sword dance boost until you're +6). Like so Scott see this comment so he can use this info in future Pokemkn Crystal solo runs.

I had both gold and silver growing up. I loved snorlax so much I caught both snorlaxs in each version and created a team with 4 snorlaxs (i transferred 2 of them to one of my games). So you talk about having a tricky time deciding a movepool...well, with 4 of them, I had different moves for each one. Snorlax 1(attacklax) - Belly Drum, Rest, Body Slam, and Earthquake Snorlax 2(elementalax)- Thunderbolt, Ice Beam, Flamethrower, and Rest Snorlax 3(Magiclax)- Psychic, Shadow Ball, Hidden Power (which I think was Dark type or at least that was my goal, I think it ended up being fighting) and Rest Snorlax 4 (Stallax) - Protect, Toxic, Body Slam, and Rest It was very fun to play against my group of friends. And yes, my team got banned in my friend group after 2 weeks of playing with 4 snorlaxs.

Snorlax was a winner of circumnstances in Gen 2. The nerf to critical hits and Hyper Beam means you can't easily one-shot or two-shot it in the physical department, while the Special split and the fact Amnesia no longer boosts damage means there are nearly no special attackers that can do that either. And then there's the things it directly got, such as the massive fact that, in Gen 2, Sleep Talk can successfully call Rest, alongside Leftovers, Curse (to patch up that physical defense), a STAB that only two evolutionary lines are immune to, and if you add Earthquake then only Skarmory resists, and a few other factors...

I get where you're coming from with the move variety issue. Trying fo pick a moveset for it is definitely hard! I personally would go for a set of Return, Belly Drum, Earthquake and a 4th slot for whatever I need to beat certain trainers (or maybe just rest). The only pokemon I can think of that resists both Return and Earthquake in gen 2 is Skamory. But I can see an argument for defense curl + rollout as well, but I don't think that would be as good as belly drum on snorlax, especially once you get the leftovers. Edit after watching the whole video: I think you did well with Snorlax. Its main weakness is that it needs set-up when other top tier pokemon don't, and it's slow so it has to let the opponent act before it, which both takes time and means you'll need rest more often, which is slower than just sweeping.

Snorlax has one of the most varied movepool for a normal type. It's basically can take any way it can, even though I wouldn't have tried a special attacker's set with it. I think that the moves that you were using were good for it, as long as it doesn't get confused. I would personally prefer to use sleep talk, rest, belly drum, return/body slam, because setting up cruse would take longer, but it's more consistent. I wonder how a skull bashing Snorlax from gen 1 would do in gen 2? 🤔 Anyways, that was a really good video, so thanks for doing these for us. I really appreciate that. ☺️

I'm sure you're already aware but the Poliwrath was using Mind Reader prior to Dynamic Punch. It's an equivalent of Lock On which guarantees inaccurate moves hit

SPOILERS BELOW! I think Snorlax literally missed the S-teir because it was too slow. Like, if it had the first hit against all the pokemon it one-shot, that's gotta be at least 45 seconds saved. But that's just how Pokémon works! Still a nice run!

Punches are all special in this gen. Return would always do more to everything than punches except for maybe steelix. Honestly return and EQ or shadow ball would hit everything extremely hard leaving you with curse and rest for survival.

Return and EQ cover more than Return and Shadow Ball. Psychics are hit hard enough with Return anyway and the Ghosts you fight are the Gastly line who are all weak to EQ.

In gen 2 i think belly drum gives you +2 if your below 50% health cause belly drum does swords dance 6 times when it works but it needs 1 swords dance when you use the move to start the procedure i saw it on a glitch youtube video

He will mosey his way along but he shall mosey with flying colors. After finishing I’d like to add that curse or belly drum is the correct play. You can always use the mint berry to wake up from rest but it’s usually bulky enough to wake up with good HP.

Whats hilarious about hidden power, you had perfect ivs for snorlax. That is hidden power dark if I am right. I'm think I am. You still could have used it for morty.

I think snorlax is still my fav after all these years. Ok I’ve watched it now. I wonder if the lower attack needed to get hidden power ground is what caused the failed one hit on snorlax at the end? If so, I wonder if hidden power dark would be fine? Probably still as good against morty, and you could use fire punch instead of ice punch on jasmine. Maybe?
@ShiningJudgment666
@ShiningJudgment666 Жыл бұрын
The lower Attack DV for sure. I mean, Ground seems necessary until Earthquake becomes available so the DVs have to stick or it's not really a proper solo run. HP Dark probably won't be as good against Morty as Dark is a Special type in Gen 2.

Belly Drum is absolutely a trap for this kind of playthrough on this kind of pokemon. Belly Drum could work in a no items solo playthrough on a pokemon fast enough to reliably outspeed the enemy's pokemon so it can clearly sweep after setting up, but Snorlax is way too slow. So you get what happened against Chuck, where not only do you give your enemy a free hit when you set up, but also every turn after that the enemy gets to attack. And you're at low HP because of Belly Drum. It's a recipe for disaster. I think that what would work better is Defense Curl plus Rollout. I know, it can be unreliable, it's not always the right call, but it A) helps fix Snorlax's lackluster defense and B) gives it a seriously powerful move against enemies that Normal-type moves aren't great against. If you didn't want to resort to Hidden Power Ground, this would have probably been a better choice for dealing with Morty (assuming you don't get hit by Hypnosis but that's a worry in any fight against him with a slow 'mon like Snorlax.) You mention that you'll learn Rollout later anyway, but see that's why I think going for Defense Curl+Rollout early is actually the better option: You really want it early on (it'll help vs Whitney in place of Belly Drum) and then if you need the move slots for something else in the mid game, you can safely replace them knowing that at level 50 you'll get another shot at Rollout. Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

I dunno why this vid got me thinking of my first ever online battle… 3v3, 1 on 1, and I squeezed a victory. How the heck did I mirror match, let alone with poor stats and non-IV trained, I somehow won due to my Gyrados knowing ice fang. (For those curious, Pokemon Sun, team was Alolan Richu, Inceneroar, and Gyrados)

If Snorlax is to have the best chance to finish faster than the box legendaries, it must be allowed to have every advantage available, especially hidden power ground. The ghost and steel gyms can be optimally fast with this upgrade. :) Belly Drum Return Hidden Power Ground Rest

So little fun fact about competitive, Snorlax is the single best Pokemon in gen 2. This INCLUDES ubers, so Lax is ranked above Lugia, Ho-oh, Mew, Mewtwo and Celebi. Absolutely insane.
