The big problem is EPA regulations, they keep sensible vehicles out of the market. It is absolutely insane. Personally I would love to see something similar to the first generation Tacoma, a small pickup with a 4-banger and a manual transmission. Nice and simple.

Kirk, Moving Tacoma production to Mexico was the saddest day Toyota pickup fans will ever have to endure. 🤨 The loss of the 'right-sized' Toyota T100 was the second worst. In the case of Hino's T100, the Chicken Tax just made it finger lickin' good. 😉

@@igglybiggly6951 Poorly made may be bogus but poorly paid is the ugly truth. It is the loss of high quality manufacturing jobs that concerns me. The made-in-California 2010 Tacoma we have in the family was built by middle-class, tax-paying American production workers who could actually afford to buy what they were building. Toyota and every other automaker disgrace themselves with their poverty pay in Mexico.

They need to add a small pickup to their lineup. It would make huge numbers in major cities. At the end of the day, I’d love a pickup for its utility, but in Los Angeles there is literally not enough room for most of these huge new pickups. Parking alone is a massive reason why I haven’t gotten one. But if a small pickup was an option, I’d buy one immediately.

OMG, at 0:31, that small silver Toyota pick-up was the exact truck I owned. I remember paying $8600 for it brand new from Toyota of Orange in California. It was the base, stripped out model, no hubcaps, no door mats, and not even a rear bumper. All it had was an AM/FM radio. I had to pay extra for the air conditioning, which was a lifesaver in the summer. The seats were vinyl and when I saved enough money I bought Toyota's velour bench covers and they were amazing. I bought floor mats and I paid $300 to buy a rear bumper. My last big purchase was I paid $600 for an aftermarket stereo. It was awesome driving down an empty fwy at 2am, windows rolled down, blasting Mozart's Requiem. Unfortunately, I sold the car two years later when I moved to NYC. I think I got $6,000 for it. What I loved about the pick-up is that it was really cheap, even for its time. To put things in perspective, Honda CRX's were selling for around $14,000. Civics were selling for not much less. I never had a care in the world driving that little pick-up. Oil and service charges twice a year was something like $60. Why can't we bring back simplicity again? Get rid of all this computer crap! If you must have an infotainment screen, use a magnetic smart phone mount. Make cars analog again. Kirk, you are Superman! Just Do It! How do you improve a spoon?
@1250ships
@1250ships 10 ай бұрын
“You won’t get a lemon at Toyota of Orange!” Unfortunately the EPA and crash rules make a true small pickup impossible to build. The Maverick (which I’m lucky enough to have) is really not that small. If I park it next to a 80’s or 90’s Toyota pickup it looks huge. I agree with Kirk that a hybrid Toyota pickup would sell like crazy. Ford clearly can’t produce enough hybrid Mavericks. Someone else needs to get into that space- the demand is there.
@davidhunternyc1
@davidhunternyc1 10 ай бұрын
@@1250ships Hah hah! You remember the commercial! 😆 It was everywhere. Do you remember, "Go See Cal Worthington and his dog, Spot!" Anyway, inclusive of crash rules, I can't see why auto manufacturers, in 2023, with modern materials can't easily make a small two door pick-up. It's not rocket science. The reason manufacturers don't build small, simple, affordable cars is that there's not enough profit. They'd rather build luxury cars and throw in gizmos and charge 4 times the price. I don't buy that profits are razor thin on automobiles. The CEOs, executives, and shareholders make millions. This is like the media pushing the narrative that Disney is "losing" money. That's funny, Bob Iger, just one guy at Disney, made $195,092,460 over 5 years. Disney is losing money alright, to Bob Iger. I believe that Kirk can move mountains.... and leap over tall buildings in a single bound.

After just finishing a river cruise covering, Germany, France, Netherlands and Switzerland. Our country has to really do a lot of re-thinking. I didn't see any "large" SUV's or trucks. There were tons of smaller very economical vehicles and everyone seemed to get around just fine. I am guilty as I want the luxury of a larger vehicle because that is what I grew up with. However, in my younger days I had a small SR5 pickup and it was a blast and got great mileage, very dependable too. However, as I wanted to tow larger items and haul larger items I eventually gave into a full size pickup. The part I keep struggling with is that at one point I had a Ford short bed with an inline 300 cu in 6 cyl, got anywhere from 17-22+ mpg. put 130,000+ trouble free miles on it. Flash forward to today and we don't get a heck of a lot better mpg's. Granted cleaner boring and more power & torque but at a tremendous increase in price and reliability. It doesn't matter what we want, it boils down to the dollar and profit and meeting safety and emissions standards to the dealers and manufacturers. It is beyond me how I survived all those years without ABS brakes, air bags, lane assist, a review camera, power windows, sunroofs, power adjustable mirrors, adaptive cruise control, GPS, etc, etc, etc.............. somehow millions of us did. :) PS: If you got this far reading this, you are doing a great job! Seriously, really enjoy your channel. Even my wife watches occasionally.

It’s hard to compare America with Europe. For one you get off the main roads you drive mid evil roads meant for horse drawn traffic . In Germany you are actually taxed on the displacement size of your engine. Americans cry about gas prices. They don’t know what expensive gas is. Practicality is a whole different thing there. No one wants to sell anything cheap on cost only on quality.

Ford comes out with the Maverick at a decent price boom! Back in 1991 I could have bought a Nissan hardbody for $8000. Bare bones truck. Manufacturers abandoned low cost trucks because of their bottom line. 40k for a new truck they can keep them.

If the Toyota Compact Cruiser is coming with body-on-frame construction and a gas engine, is it not more likely to be produced on that production line and platform? Then the problem becomes one of where they will make this. I would assume the Compact Cruiser will be made in Japan--but it will have to be built in North America to avoid the chicken tax.

The HiLux is the top pickup in Brasil (made in Argentina).However, it costs over 50k USD there; a very expensive truck, and for years the Chevy S10 and the Hilux used the Diesel from MWM as their main engine, which happens to be from a VW subsidiary. The car business is a lot more complex than people realize. So many regulations and quirks in each country to work around. Outside of places like Indonesia and Malaysia i don't see a lot of cheap small trucks.

I hear quite a few people looking for a truck but the ones on market are either too big or just made excessively larger just to meet or pass the EPA regulations which of course are ridiculous. If the smaller trucks came back I forsure would've bought one instead of the RAV I know the cross is there but it was too late. I do feel the pricing would've been just as insane if not worse just because it is a "truck". My area has high markups for anything at a dealer even used which seems crazy I had to go quite far just to find a decent price. Edit: I seen someone find some loophole (i guess it would be considered) it would have to be electric or some kind of hybrid so who knows what'll happen.

Thinking with inflation not seeming to end and if a new compact Toyota Pickup truck was priced $10,000 less than a mid-size truck, it would definitely steal sales from the Tacoma. But, on the other hand, it seems Toyota will 'miss the boat' if they don't produce one with that market so hot right now.

If you look at it in another way, some people only buy the Tacoma because they don't have a compact truck option and they want the Toyota reliability/durability so having a compact option will definitely allow those people to go one segment below which I guess could be stealing the sales of the Tacoma. But it will also introduce more people into the Toyota family since the Maverick is still so hard to get and the Santa Cruz's reliability is questionable given it's a Hyundai product.

Since we got rid of sedans and their segments, I don’t see why they haven’t converted that line up to trucks/SUVs, Corolla? Corolla cross, Camry? Rav4, Avalon? Crown. Point is we need a truck line up that consists of a small medium and large truck. That being the new Stout, the Tacoma and the Tundra. Would actually have a good truck line up to compete with Ford and GM

I was looking forward to a new small Toyota Pickup. Thanks for the "they have looked at nothing yet" let down. Any chance for a small sporty car similar to the earliest Celica's? The first few years they were great cars. I had a '71 and never had any problems with it. It was a work car, it ran two rallies per week and drove cross country three times. Unfortunately it suffered a quick death when a babysitter watching our children stuffed into a light pole at a high speed and destroyed the front end and the drive train.

Well, I believe it’s hard for Toyota to bring out a new pickup model now considering that they’re moving towards electrification. Perhaps when they’ve already solved their electrification problems, like when they already have the best batteries, best motors, best e-axles, I believe that’s the time they can bring out new models and try to compete.

When i park my 94' Toyota 4wd xtra cab pickup next to a maverick my truck is still smaller width and cab wise. It's probably more equivalent to a tacoma from early 2000s. The maverick is definitely cheaper body and durability being based on unibody crossover vehicle. Who knows Toyotas decision fun to speculate but id rather have a smaller body on frame truck would be my preference.

I want a small pickup, rear wheel drive, 4 or 6 cylinder, available straight and auto trans. I do not want a mutation to compete with the Ford Maverick. When I say small, I mean like a 1980 Chevy Luv pickup small. Like a 90's 2 wheel drive Tacoma. The reason they quit making those pickups was pure greed.

Here's a novel idea, maybe Toyota should focus on actually producing enough current model trucks to meet the current demand instead of bringing another "flavor of the week" to market. My local dealers still have no inventory of current trucks, everything is allocations that you have to purchase sight unseen, with no ability to test drive.

I think Toyota needs to build a truck to compete with the Maverick. As far as losing sales with their other trucks, like the tundra, or the Tacoma not sure that would happen If a person needs to buy a truck to tow heavy loads, they would buy a tundra for medium loads a Tacoma for a vehicle for just fuel mileage and some bed capacity and very light towing, and a four-door people mover ,Why not a stout. I think that would make sense and would probably be a very desired truck. Look at Maverik they can’t sell them fast enough
@SaskatchewanBadAss
@SaskatchewanBadAss 10 ай бұрын
If toyota does make a new stout, sadly itll be just like mavric/santa cruz itll be 4doors 3 1/2 or 4ft bed based off a compact suv and will be front wheel drive or awd. Not a chance toyota would give a single cab or extra cab compact with a frame and rwd. They want to sell to familys so a proper small truck isnt profitable in north america . But i wish they would
