George wasn't literally the "richest man in town" moneywise, his brother meant, he was the richest man figuratively, because he was the most loved.

I know you are correct, and it wasn’t the point of the movie, but George, though not the _richest_ financially, he, at the end, was given by his community the equivalent of at least $519,624.77 in 2023 dollars (at least $33,000 in 1946 dollars). Again, not the point of the movie, but it shouldn’t be missed, and it wasn’t by the folks in 1946. I think people miss it today because $33,000 doesn’t sound the same as over half a million dollars.

@@polferiferus1938 Exactly! This ending has got a double meaning: by the end of the movie George Bailey was the richest man in that town because how loved he was AND, because every member of that town that George Bailey ever helped got together to help bail him out of trouble this time, George Bailey also became the richest man in Bedford Falls financially too ♥️

It tugged at my heartstrings when you said you had no friends. Think about the movie you just watched. Think of all the people your platform is reaching. Think of the people who feel they have no one to relate to, and then they tune into you and are entertained for a while. You may have even saved a life or two yourself.

Black and white is wonderful but, like classical music, abstract painting, or other media, it helps if you understand a little about it. Without the distraction of colour, B&W allows the photography to bring out textures and the contrasts of light and shade. These contrasts can add drama to scenes without exaggeration. Please, do yourself a favour and watch more black and white movies.

The racial structure was what it was back then. You just had a choice about whether you were a jerk about it or not. If someone's your employee, regardless of skin tone, you have a choice about how you treat them. Lilian Randolph, a terrific actress, plays Annie, their housekeeper and for a movie made in 1946, there isn't even a hint of overt racism. They treat her like she's part of the family. Growing up, she was my favourite character. Lilian was known for her VoiceOver work mostly, and I really need to check that out, as long as we don't end up with racist caricatures, which were common at that time, unfortunately.

It's mean as well to be proud of your life, because even if you don't know you can have a big impact on people without noticing it if you live a decent and respectful life. And the movie is a touch of realism as George is very human with hope and dream crush, anger, bad temper sometime, we can all recognise ourself in this.

This is such an iconic and adult Christmas movie. This was Stewart's 1st movie after returning from WW2--the bar scene he recalled raw emotion from PTSD. He was also unsure about taking the role--thought he was too old. Lionel Barrymore (Mr. Potter) was a close friend and talked him into taking the role. Barrymore is from the acting family (Drew Barrymore is a current generation relation). He was solid as a comedic and dramatic actor. My mom always resented that Mr. Potter got away with stealing 8K.

t's a Wonderful Life is more than a Christmas movie I am not christen and I love it. It is a feel good movie and one of the first time travel element movies. It is so much about time travel or alternative realities that Back to the future 2 allude to it :). Fun fact the movie was not a financial success when it came out and was forgotten. Only because of a copyright registration error ( Which was fixed decades later) the movie was considered public domain for years and because of the that the Tv Networks aired over and over every Christmas till it became a cult classic. Another fun fact the scene with the uncle that was drunk and fell down was adlib because one of the stage worker dropped something in the middle of filming. I love George speech to Mr Potter about the working class. The actor who plays Mr Potter is by the way Drew Barrymore great uncle. If you want another great Jimmy Stewart movie you should watch Mr Smith goes to Washington and Harvey.

👍 👍 Two things 1.) The crow was actually a Raven (a trained bird that appeared in almost every Director Frank Capra film (it is also the same "crow" that landed on the Scarecrow's shoulder in the Wizard of Oz. 2.) James Stewart (George Bailey) was a real war hero as he piloted B-24 Bimbers over Germany and commanded entire bomber squadrons. He remained in the Air Force Reserves after the war attaining the rank of General. You can look it up.

Merry Christmas, India. It's always fascinating watching people if today look at how the world was before their time. This movie, like most you will see, serves as a time capsule into the past. The absence of technology, the cost of living, social norms, and other things that were acceptable are always surprising to people on this side of the 2oth century. Some would even say that as much as technology has advanced many things, it has brought just as much harm as good. Also, the old man in the movie is Lionel Barrymore. He is Drew Barrymore's great uncle and part of the great Barrymore acting family. They were a well-respected dynasty on film and stage. As long as you are in a black and white mood, you should take the time to watch Marilyn Monroe in SOME LIKE IT HOT with acting legends Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis, father of Jamie Lee Curtis. It's funny and very good. And the John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart western THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE might give some perspective on how the west was won. I've been subscribed to your music channel for about 3 years and am glad to see you expand your platform. Happy Holidays and good luck into the New Year.

I'm sorry you can't see the beauty of black and white films. There are so many amazing films that were made either before color was pervasive or as a director's choice. The story and the acting are more important than the way the film looks. Hopefully the more you see these films, the more you'll appreciate them.

My family didn't even own a color TV until I was in 9th grade in 78, then I got the old B&W TV in my bedroom. The scene where George comes out of his mom's halfway house,Clarence telling him he's gone, the extreme closeup on his face, is a very dark, almost scary scene DiCapra did! Can u even believe, this movie saved his life? From WW2? Can u believe how many movies came from this? Jimmy started out as a ww2 pilot, became an ace, squadron commander, wing commander, and an entire flight operations officer! He had horrible PTSD, until he did this movie. And the biggest crime? The banker....shoulda went to jail! He is the original family royalty, Barrymore! But he belongs in jail!!! Black and white Reese Witherspoon movie? Groundhog Day? Scrooged? Four Christmases? Click? And in some places, very dark!! And his girl, went on to massive acclaim. Movies and the Donna Reed show!! The jim Carrey 50s movie, plus Bruce Almighty, plus beautiful sunlight...plus the Truman show? The impact of this movie, ....u can't count that high! Also watch his incredible movie, Mr Smith goes to Washington! U will never hear references to Clarence, ever again, during Christmas, Angels, miracles, without thinking of this movie!! Pro tip.... SNL did a skit where several of the townspeople confronted Potter, whip his butt, then send him to jail for theft and bank fraud! Pro tip...the ginger snap cookie, was made from this movie, when George called Zuzu, gingersnap!!

James Stewart is actually a Princeton University graduate who studied architecture and learned acting as well at Princeton. He was going to go to graduate school before deciding to become an actor(Rope,Rear Window, Vertigo, The Man Who Knew too Much) He is an Oscar winner as well as Donna Reed(Mary), actress who plays older Violet, and brother Billy for different films. The man who plays Potter is a Barrymore and is a relative of Drew Barrymore the actress, producer, talk show host, and designer/mom. Bedford Falls is based on Seneca Falls, NY which is a real place and has a museum dedicated to this film. Places like Rochester, NY and Buffalo, NY made an impression on Frank Capra which is why they were mentioned in the film. There is a parody to this film called It's a Wonderful Knife a slasher film which is forgettable The guy who was Mary's date and dumped at the dance was actually in the original b/w series The Little Rascals and his character was Alfalfa. Losing 8K at the time(2023 dollars) was about 33K so that was quite a lot of money which was lost by Billy. George was offered a salary in 2023 dollars by Potter of over 300K which would have made him wealthy for the time. My advice when it comes to being a film reviewer: whether a film is b/w or color, silent or a "talkie", animated or traditional, regardless or rating or decade, just be open minded, review the film based on no prejudices: don't like b/w, foreign films since I don't like reading subtitles, or have disregard for an actor/actress. You might be surprised at how many good films there are you are missing! Have a "wonderful" holiday season. Best from (non snowy) #BuffaloNY A few of the original film differences: in the first version, George was a politician and depressed over not winning an election. 2nd when he goes home and he realizes how grateful he is he goes on his knees and recites The Lord's Prayer but the Director did not want the movie overly religious and George made the reference by praying to God and being thankful and finally The Hayes Code which dealt with censorship and moral codes did not punish Potter and was going to give him a fatal heart attack but Director Frank Capra changed his mind and thought that the punishment of the love of the town and family over Potter and getting "saved" by the angel was more than enough. Great Christmas movies that are b/w? Scrooge(1951) and A Miracle on 34th Street with Natalie Wood. #Classics

Were atheist but never used it as an excuse to cheat our kids out of all the fun and memories other kids have. In fact we bought them their own little trees for their bedrooms and let them decorate the trees any way they liked. It wasn't costly. A single string of lights, and a couple of small boxes of ornaments and a tree top piece with a color matching string of garland. Even our autistic son enjoyed going to the Christmas store and picking out the colors he wanted. And it was unusual for him to express his feelings. He picked out M&M lights and a lot of red ornaments. He still likes red.

It sounds like you are really struggling in your life. Jesus is our best friend, even when there is no one else. The Jehovah's Witness religion is not true Christianity. They don't believe in having a personal relationship with God. Also, no amount of good works can save you. The good news of the gospel is that Jesus took all of our sins upon himself when he sacrificed His life on the cross. Then He rose again to victory, making the way eternal life for all those who believe in Him. May God richly bless you, and may you find the "new birth" as is mentioned in John chapter 3.
