One of the best streams in a while. And the only one I've watched all the way through in months. 👍 Great stream! I totally understand sometimes you've got lots of technical stuff to talk about but there's no reason EVERY stream should be that way and there's NEVER a reason to listen the haters.

Can NSF do more Rocket Lab coverage? I want to learn more about them. They have an impressive launch-cadence by any sane standards but somehow do not ever seem to get the love or hate of other launch providers.

I miss the belly-flops and flip-and-burns. I am glad that Starship is bringing those back. If the hot-staging ring is jettisoned, does that mean that Starship will not be fully reusable and will have extended turn-around time? Also, why? CoM issue? [Edit: Asked and answered]

The UK site is at a latitude that will save fuel when putting payloads into a polar orbit. Less velocity to scrub off to get there!

46:20 I disagree. Boeing is a for-profit company, not making a profit right now - especially on Starliner. Yes it's not costing NASA anything - yet. At some point Boeing shareholders will have had enough and force them to pull the plug on a design that's just too compromised for HSF. Then what? What's the backup if Starliner completely fails? A modified Orion? BO coming up with an alternative? Starship is a quasi-alternative in that it's a separate platform so there's redundance there, but you're still single-sourcing the manufacturer in SpaceX. IMO NASA would be best served spinning up a competition for one more vehicle design that Starliner would need to compete against. I'm sorry, but Boeing has lost my trust and while I'd be fine seeing Starliner as a cargo craft to ISS, Apollo 1 is the first thing I think about when I think Starliner.

My bet is on dreamchaser, if NASA needs an alternative crew rated vehicle to go to low earth orbit the dreamchaser would probably be the best alternative as a previous candidate for the program that has slowly been developing even though they weren't selected for the program. Dreamchaser is so cool, I really want them to succeed. A couple more months for their first flight hopefully.

Star liner is a boondoggle and not worth further investment. In fact, NASA should get as much back as they can. Sierra Space is the better option.

Although it's a shame I can rarely catch this live, I'm reallyenjoying the Flame Trench. It's nice to see the range of opinions on these options (EJ makes a very good devil's advocate). And while it's in the nature of an unscripted discussion to go of the rails at times, it's surprising how much I've found myself fully invested in these side trails. Between the wealth of information we get about these flights to the observation and research they do, there's so much to talk about for sure.

Bideford is pronounced Bid- eh-ford. Its also another town in the UK like Leicester. Almost all of your towns and cities are named after British ones. Look at a British road map. Your mind will be blown😮

Every time anybody on any related thread asks that NASA cancel StarLiner I explain that: 1. It would actually *cost* NASA money, because they would have to *buy* six more flights from SpaceX or SierraSpace. 2. SpaceX already *assumes* that they will not be called upon to fly those six flights, because otherwise they would have needed to build another Crew Dragon. 3. *IF* NASA cancelled Starliner they would be *punished* financially by Congress, just as they would be *punished* if they cancelled SLS. Remember that it is not *NASA's* money that is being spent, it is the *taxpayers'* money, and the taxpayers have trusted the village idiots club on Capitol Hill with the management of their money despite the fact that demonstrably nobody on Capitol Hill can count past ten without taking their shoes off! If you disagree with how Congress is spending *your* money then vote for *anybody* but the incumbents this November!

Before I put my 2 cents on the Starliner controversy, I thank you all for an amazing job . EJ ? I think, 1° this is not just about the leek is the sum of all the issues that continue to pile up and 2°- Throwing shade on SpaceX saing that Dragon had leeks, pathetic Dragon is operative and Starliner is not even close... the hole picture looks fucked up not just one event. And to top it all up, if Starliner finally gets to fly, it is gonna be 35 million dollars over the cost of Dragon. Why??

This is the Flame Trench. It is meant to be (mostly) unscripted and light-hearted. The name was deliberately picked for that reason. NSF has plenty of much more "professional" content on the channel.

I’m a fan of the concept, it’s just EJ. I can’t bring myself to like the guy, which is a shame. I’m sure I’m in the minority, still best YT channel I know of!
