Restoring a complete workshop is, at least to me, just as interesting as your other restoration projects 👍 Great job so far and look forward to see the end result 😊 Best wishes, Jimmy

I did some work part time in a machine shop while I was in school, and a tip for blasting hardware and smaller parts that my boss taught me was to throw things in a wire mesh kitchen strainer. Comes with its own handle and keeps the parts from running away or falling through the screen in the bottom of the cabinet. They wear through eventually, but they're cheap enough to replace when needed.

You can use a square cut from Scotch-Brite pad for a filter in the parts washer- works for Mineral spirits based machines or water based as well

Great progress and glad to see that it's coming right along. To keep the top of those work benches ship-shape, you could lay down a sheet of zinc-plated or stainless steel. Makes cleanup a breeze and of course would make the top much more durable. Just a thought.

Nice one. Glad to see you’re cracking on with it. Re lighting, have a few different lights on different circuits, being able to vary the ‘shadows’ when working on something is a godsend sometimes. Oh, and you should have painted the floor under the press before bolting it down lol.

I used to use 60grit aluminum oxide for etching surfaces for bonding, but also works great for rust removal. It will make the surface semi rough, but if you follow through with glass bead it will smooth it out. I was fortunate to have 2 blast cabinets so i didnt have to clean out the system and lines to change the media. 1 was dedicated for glass bead the other for aluminum oxide. Only thing is glass bead can really make the surface slick to allow paint and stuff to really stick. You can make it happen, but you have to keep an eye on it. Also boron carbide nozzle for sand blasting and used ceramic nozzles for glass bead.

Excellent progress. I hate to think how much it would cost to buy those I beams now with current steel prices, but they will make awesome tool strands. Bolting the hydraulic press down will make it much easier to use, but the need to have it close to the wall for practical reasons may be restrictive if you have an awkward part to deal with. Best wishes.

Was that Tu-Pac epoxy? 😁 Also, for the incandescent light tubes, you can get LED versions that fit into the sockets, and they are way brighter. I did the swap in 2 of my ceiling lights and its a big difference. Its amazing how much stuff you can cram into a garage, especially when you go vertical. I know, I probably rearrange mine once a year to fit more projects and tools/equipment.

Very cool! Thanks!! Can you please say more about the professionally done wheel refinishing and what to look for? You kind of convinced me not to do my own. You had me at "acid dipped." Most services I see here in the US are just wheel repair shops looking for business and that is not what I want. Also your wheel/tire rack (hope it holds) made me realize I probably need a spare set of wheels/tires, (and a rack) since I only have one car. Thanks for that, too!!

Good to see it coming along. Now I'm gonna be that guy. I've been blasting with Clemco Pulsar VI cabinets and another Clemco pressure pot for about 15 years. It's so old I don't even know what the model is. But it's a beast. RIP to your epoxy paint. After a while nothing survives in there. We blast semiconductor parts so we actually blast the paint off before we put any live parts in there because it comes off so fast and we can't have contaminants. I'm in the desert southwest in the US so rust isn't a problem but definitely something to keep an eye out for in the UK. If you're removing rust with a pressure pot (I might be playing games on my phone and half paying attention but it looks like that's what you're using) and you're using 40/60 AlOx you're going to blow through or deform your part. Even 70 is a lot. Those are for creating surface roughness, probably somewhere in the 2 - 4 um range, which is a lot for a bare metal or painted part. Maybe look into 150 or 220. That should do the job just fine in that beefy cabinet and leave you with a smoother surface finish. And AlOx was the right choice for what you're doing. If someone tries to sell you SiC shoot that suggestion down. It's amazing for super hard surfaces, but it breaks down faster and it's super sharp and will likely embed itself in most of the materials you'll be blasting. AlOx lasts forever, comparatively. Speaking of deforming parts. Turn your pressure way down when you're blasting sheet metal parts. It takes zero effort to deform sheet metal parts in a pressure pot. Turn it down to like 20 PSI (sorry, I only know freedom units) and work up from there. It's wild how fast it happens. Good luck with the shop. Been here since day one and I'm excited to see where it goes!
