"Its All Earth and Sky!", was the reaction of one German-Russian immigrant when she arrived on the plains of the Midwest. Like many others who came to the region seeking a land of promise and opportunity, she and her family enduredand prevailedon this rich, expansive landscape.
Immigration implies departure as well as arrival. Transport from one country to another may mean deportation; it inescapably includes exile whether voluntary or forced, and brings disruption to families in the old country and in the new. Immigrants require courage and fortitude, even when they are weak and poor. Like many others who have come here seeking a land of promise and opportunity, Germans from Russia have suffered and they have prevailed. Since their background and history is as rich in texture as it is in diversity, they serve here as a model of assimilation of other ethnic groups into American society. Five representative Germans from Russia who have attained success and stability share their insights on the process of becoming American.

I love the comment about German language because that's how it was in my family when they settled here they tried to learn English as quickly as possible and my grandfather's rule was only English spoken in the house if you want to speak German you have to go to the barn. When he had visitors that only spoke German than they always left the house and went out to the barn to converse. They thought it was a very heavy liability to be heard or seen speaking German.

Gotta love the fact the governor of Montana, who is actually native Montanan, hates Montana. Thank God, my home state finally has a non-native Montanan governor, who actually loves Montana.

Very insightful and resonant of my parents and great grandparents. I thought Marquart made an interesting observation about the girls leaving the hometown and never going back. My mother did the same. She didn't want to stay in the area and marry a farmer, so she became an accountant. She was ambitious and intellectual. I am perhaps her opposite; not ambitious and wanting just to be able to cook and garden. Perhaps it is in the blood, but I think if you work away from family in an office instead of with family, you lose something. The nurturing of plants and putting food you've grown on the table keeps you connected and in turn nurtures your soul. You don't need more and are satisfied with less. Schweitzer's observation about the Russian Germans attitude toward government and politics mirrors my own. I've often thought there must be genetic memory...LOL. I was fascinated at the information that Russia had attracted homesteaders so much earlier than the U.S. This video was quite interesting.

My mother would never tell anyone we were German ( my father was Polish, my mother was German ). Apparently after WWII it was considered more acceptable to be of Polish descent ( even though I could not speak a word of Polish and only a bit of German ).

Interesting that the founder of USA Today said “legal immigrants are welcome “. Would he then be considered a racist by the very people who would buy his paper today?

"without religion a society will fail".....I suggest without God as the head of the Nation, it will fail. Religion is man made ! Catholicism, ( which is not Christianity), Hinduism, ect....

WRONG. Catholicism is Christianity. Who do you think that man on the crucifix is? So ignorant of you to posit your opinion as fact.
