Neymar's legacy has always resonated with the quote “something better than nothing.” For us football fans ATLEAST we got to live and see him during his Santos and Barca years entertaining us. He was a joy to watch and i bet all of us always have that hope whenever he’s on the pitch or national team that he’s gonna do something crazy. I give him merit for that. Sad news for Ney.

Neymar when he was at his very best he was one of the best players in the world and was already a superstar when he played for Santos for god sake at the age of 19 as a teenager in the Brazilian league he finished top 10 for the Ballon Dor in 2011 outside of a top 5 league in Europe and it tells you just how good he was at the time and all the top teams wanted to sign him. As soon as he made that move to Barcelona in 2013, he enjoyed 4 brilliant seasons there as he was very pivotal in a team that won the treble in 2015 as he was joint top scorer in the champions league and the following season in 2016 he was in impressive form for Barcelona as they won the domestic double and even his last season there he was unstoppable as well. He played the best football of his career at Barcelona as we saw him at his absolute peak there with his goalscoring creativity dribbling ridiculous flair skill and technique he was just that good. Despite his talent it was very obvious that at Barcelona as long as Messi was there Neymar would always be in his shadow and it was gonna be difficult for him to be seen as the best player in the world since at the time he was seen as the heir to Messi and Ronaldo and in the summer of 2017 he made a decision that changed his career and ruined his legacy and the way he’s perceived as a player. The biggest mistake of his career was leaving Barcelona for PSG as he made a move that was just too premature as yes Neymar wanted to get out of Messi’s shadow and have his own team but the reality is in terms of quality and competitiveness Ligue 1 isn’t on the same level as other leagues like La Liga or the premier league and nobody was ever gonna his flowers for his excellent domestic success at PSG no matter how well he played since fans and pundits don’t rate Ligue 1 as a top league. His greatness at PSG was always measured off of his success in the champions league and unfortunately in 6 seasons he’s only played in 1 champions league final which was in 2020 during COVID where PSG didn’t play an elite team until Bayern Munich in the final where they narrowly lost. This loss negativity impacts his legacy and if he had stayed at Barcelona Neymar would win a couple more champions league titles and who knows maybe if he showed more patience he would have a Ballon Dor to his name by now. If PSG had won the Champions League in 2020 we would probably be having a different conversation about Neymar’s career and in the game the margins are just so so small.

I used to be a Big Ney fan back when he played for Santos. The "Copa Libertadores 2011" was epic. He had everything, spped, talent, he could do whatever he wanted to do. His departure to PSG was not a good sign.

The point you have on "playing too much football" is a good one. As an Arsenal fan I do get concerned by how we have relied on Saka so much. I hope we're able to rotate and rest him a bit more by next season.

The fact that he got the numbers he did with the injury record he has speaks volumes. He is a victim of his own playstyle, too much in the defenders face, too agressive, but without the physical robustness to let his body pay the checks his mind was passing. I feel for the dude, but he went far, did a lot. For sure one of, if not the best brazilian player, and as close to the top as anyone in the Messi Ronaldo era got. Hope he comes back for a few more years of good times.

I think people are being too harsh, its the injuries that derailed his career mostly not necessarily his lifestyle, people forget that not all bodies are built the same, neymar is similar to R9 in terms of their injury record, R9 was just lucky enough to have achieved more before the injuries fully ran its course. Has everyone forgotten the first season of neymar at psg he would have won the ballond'or that season had psg no crashed out in the champions league.

I give my perspective about Neymar: Neymar for me is the second best entertainer I’ve ever seen after Ronaldinho. His skills, goals, celebrations, games are just fun & impressive to watch. I remember the national game against Argentina in 2016 when he bodied just everybody from the Argentina squad. Even Messi couldn’t handle him. Like it wasn’t funny to me. My perspective of why he leaved Barça is bcs he wanted to show the ppl that he can be the boss without Messi & Suarez. Bcs he doesn’t wanted to be the shadow of Messi. I feel like ppl are so much impulsive discrediting when ppl forget of what he archived. He was a Top 10 player of the Ballon’dor as a Santos player. He carried the whole Brazil to the 2013 Confed Cup & their first Olympia ever in 2016. He putted PSG for the first in time in a CL Final in 2020. He played in Copa America Final in 2021 & the Argentinas were so fucking dirty to him. And I’m sure ppl wouldn’t say that his career failed if he won the CL with & the Copa while he won already for Brazil. Injuries were his reasons tho. For all ppl saying „He should stay at Barça. He would def win a Ballon’dor“ i say maybe. But only bcs of Suarez & especially Messi. He would be shadowed just like Xavi & Iniesta. Bcs after 2015 Barça couldn’t get it done to win more CL trophies. In terms of „plays“ they’re the best trios but by „success“ no. So in my perspective Neymar‘s career isn’t failed. He’s just discredited bcs he leaved Barça

Pogba was off that list years ago, in my opinion. That first spell at Juve, he was immense. But that ended in 2016. Everything from that point has been fairly average, especially considering his ability. Neymar, Messi, Ronaldo and Hazard were / are a levels above. Totally see what you mean though. He should have been one of the best. Still a world cup winner though at least :)

You see where I'm going here Brazil's highest position in the World Cup is 4th in the last 5 world Cups since their win in 2002. Not a single title, runner up or third place, just 4th.

As a Juve fan, i think of Federico Chiesa's ACL tear & when he came back a year later he still wasn't himself for the rest of that season & needed a few months to return to great form. Even now he struggles with muscle fatigue & pain with reports he might miss the bench vs. Milan this weekend after not playing for the last 2 weeks & not playing for the Azzurri. Alessandro Del Piero suffered an ACL tear early in his career too but luckily things turned out the way they did for him. I also remember Nicolo Zaniolo when he was at Roma, he was rushed back too soon, didn't feel 100%, was compensating with a lack of trust in the knee & tore his OTHER ACL as he tore BOTH ACL's within the SAME calendar year. These injuries you DON NOT rush someone back prematurely. I think Brazil playing Neymar in Copa America is inevitable but I think it will be an awful decision & I have a bad feeling he will REALLY hurt himself even more if he does play when he's not 100%. A shame for Neymar & I wouldn't be surprised if he may consider retiring early like Eden Hazard bc of this

I do think footballers play too much football. There is constant tweeking of the game to try to manage this, such as the 5 sub rule, but league seasons are long, multiple cup games and then almost constant international games. However, that said, the ever increasing wages of top level players only pushes the clubs to get more games to get more revenue. Solutions?

I think the biggest reason Neymar shouldn’t be judged as much for his national team not winning a world cup, is the obvious fact that this is the worst Brazilian squad we have ever seen… Neymar didn’t have 2-3 greats playing with him like a Rivaldo, Ronaldo & Ronaldinho had, or Pele with Garrincha; his attacking support was Richarlison, Coutinho, Hulk, Gabi Jesus…

The problem is not that he didn't live up to his full potential, I understand he never had to be the next Messi but the only Neymar, it was hard to be on Messi's shadow and leaving Barcelona for PSG was a good decision if he wanted to step up to n°1. From that moment it was a 50/50 and he knew it - he made the right decision with what he knew at that moment. Personally I found it hard to support him because of his histrionics and dirty tactics, and then it became harder the further he progressed into becoming a PR machine with little results to back it up. It's not really a sad story by looking at his wallet but it's the perfect example of footballers who were so, so ready, but it's a combination of chance and choice.

One aspect that I thing the move for PSG was bad, was that his behavior looked worse after the move. In the first games on the national team, I had the impression of him playing in a more sellfish way, keeping the ball to himself a lot without being very productive. Not only that, but some problems off the field he had in PSG, that I don't remember he having in Barcelona. To crown everything, he could have left PSG last year, but decided to sign a new contract, only to leave in the way he left 1 year later. Sadly, we will always ask what would have been if he never left Barcelona.

Another awesome video. You're right, though - there's always a 'but' with Neymar. An absolute baller of a player, genuinely world class and a guy who could do things on the pitch that would just make your jaw drop. It feels wrong to criticise him but that move to PSG was madness - he was far too good for that league. Surely he could have played at the very top level for longer before the move to the sports wash, too. Feels stupid to say his career was underwhelming but for how good he was, a part of me still thinks it. To be that good and only have one champions league medal just feels like an injustice to me. I'm sure his bank balance offers him some comfort, though. But damn, what a player!
