Thanks for another great video Tamara, I like your delivery and style :-) I've just used both mic's filming wildlife in Africa for the last 6 months. The MKE400 is too noisy unfortunately, the internal ambient noise it produces is quite high. However its auto on/off feature is so awesome! They are both quite robust, they both got dropped/monopod fell over with the camera crushing them and still work fine. I'm switching the MKE 400 out for the Sony ECM-G1 Shotgun Microphone as on my Sony 200-600 lens camera its filming wildlife that doesn't often make much noise, and I'm filming within the cab of a Land Rover, so size of the rig when its mounted is more useful than audio quality of silence ;-) Keep them coming if you can! Wow, you're making my head spin TG! I already have an MKE400 but it's massively different to the one here as it's over 12 years old. I was thinking of getting the Rode Go II but now I shall certainly wait for your comparison review, as the new MKE400 does sound quite a bit better than the 200. Agreed about the whole battery faff, but the 'auto switch on' sounds brilliant. I've tried my ancient 'finger-like' MKE400 with the GoPro on the Media Mod but it gets into shot, and I'd rather just one mic for both the 'big' camera and the action cam. A quality vlog as always - many thanks!
@TamaraGabrielUK
@TamaraGabrielUK Жыл бұрын
I think if you’re wanting it for your GoPro as well, you’d be better off with the MKE 200 as the 400 gets in the shot, especially with the deadcat on. The 200 sounds good with the GoPro, I used it in the recent Bath vlog about the Volta. That’s the mic I always use with my GoPro.

I’ve been using a MKE 200 on a GoPro 10 for some time. I found the sound quite tinny, I then tried the MKE 400 found a huge difference I now sound like The Jolly Green Giant when taking behind the camera & the general quality in front has depth which was missing before. Thanks for your video.

My 66-year old ears could barely hear any difference Tamara. Perhaps if I were to listen on my Mac through studio speakers (KRK Rokit 5s) I could better detect the difference. It goes without saying but I’ll say it anyway - another enjoyable watch! 💜

Oh the MKE-400 finally made me happy about an on-camera mic, its sound quality is wonderful, the deadcat is compact, the back of it doesn't prod into my forehead when I've got my eye to the viewfinder and the auto on/off is very helpful. Need more oomph? Just drop a compressor filter onto the audio.

Your voice is always good to listen to, but there is certainly some improvement with the new mic, although the lack of rechargeable battery is a drawback, I think. Here in New Zealand we've just moved into summer, but that misty day made me feel rather nostalgic for the English winters I used to know.

My goodness. My heart jumped to my mouth when your camera went at the end! I love the mke400. It also has good side rejection. Definitely more full sounding than my mke200. One thing with that high pass filter though is that it seems to affect my voice more than it does yours. It’s not massively different on your voice. When I switch it in, I sound quite thin and tinny. Must be voice.

I would love the MKE400 did it not have one very big flaw. Never have your camera or recorder connected to any mains power supply or your computer. It has a terrible hum. I got two of these mics, Sennheiser confirmed it is how it was designed. So I returned one. I can not use it in a "studio-like" environment. If you only use it on battery operated cameras, it is okay. This is a bummer, because it is a very good sounding and compact size microphone. But that hum is a dealbreaker if you ever want to charge your camera or smartphone while recording. No other mic I have has this issue.

I have a little studio experience with Sennheiser microphones and I'd say, personally, I prefer the 400 over the 200 as you present them. Not having read the specs as I type this, I'd say the 400 has a wider dynamic range given the richness I perceive at my end. The 200 appears to be aimed more at sibilence or higher end of the spectrum. I would personally use the 200 in studio vs the 400 in outdoor-sy environments. 'H' and 'S' sounds seem more bright with the 200 where they're more muted with the 400. But that's me. I prefer the lower end of the spectrum short of 'boom-ey-woom-ey' sounds. So, in short? 200 for action and catch your attention sets and 400 for rich, intimate insightful sets. Sorry to go on like this, but I have an interest in sound...🤔

Nice review! I had some gift cards and went with the ECM-B10, mainly because of the connection with Sony and that's what I use the majority of the time for videos. I like not having to worry about the battery. That being said, the MKE 200 was going to be what I went with if I didn't have the gift cards. Obviously, I'm limited and can't use it with my Action 3 but that's where the Rode Wireless GO II comes into play. At some point I feel like I just keep gathering more and more video/audio equipment because of your reviews, I guess you can never have enough toys! Great review as always!

Tamara there seems to be a lot of sony users saying this mic has a lot of background hiss or noise when shooting in quite environments. I even watched one reviewer demonstrate this in his studio. He said it was fine to use when there was some ambient noise to mask this.
@TamaraGabrielUK
@TamaraGabrielUK 8 ай бұрын
It's not something I've experienced, it will also depend on what audio record level the camera is set to, the higher it is the more the noise floor will be audible. Because there's a +20dB gain on the mic, I have that on and the audio record levels in the camera very low.

I actually prefer the removable batteries, because if I’m filming and the battery dies, I have to wait to recharge the 200 or Rode mics, but with the MKE400 I just drop another set of batteries and keep filming. No waiting for recharge is huge for me when I’m on the go.

Agreed. I am done with internal batteries for my shotgun mics. My Deity D3 Pro battery strength starting getting weak and now takes twice as long to recharge and now my Rode Videomic NTG battery life is starting to lose its potency. For the MKE 400 I just bought some rechargeable AAA batteries and I got a mic that would last a lifetime.

The MKE 400 is the one I use with my A7s III and the MKE 200 is the one I use with smaller cameras when I want to use a shotgun mic with, say, the Sony ZV-1 M2, or in the past the GoPro HERO11. But yeay, the MKE 400 has a slightly richer sound I find.

@TamaraGabrielUK would you choose mke 200 or the rode go II? Here in Canada the mke 200 with small tripod around $120 CAD while the rode go II only is around $140 CAD. I do vlog videos and indoor setup videos usually interview style which one would you recommend for such setup?
@TamaraGabrielUK
@TamaraGabrielUK 5 ай бұрын
@gilbertgk Honestly, either would be a good shout. I guess the Rode GO II has the versatility of being able to plug in via USB-C as well as 3.5mm. Whereas the MKE 200 is only 3.5mm, but it’s my preference because of how much more compact it is.
