This is the long awaited Cavalex class 56. 56 008.
I placed my order something like 5/6 months, to much time has passed to remember and on Friday the 27th January I received an email from Rails Of Sheffield to say it was on it's way. After work on the Friday me and my bro went to train club and opened it for the first time....I was in amazement at it but I couldn't run. Saturday rolled round and I knew what I had to do. The model from top to bottom, left to right and inside to outside is full of eye candle detail just waiting to be looked at and taken in. But I think one of, if not the most important part of this model is when you push F1 on the controller and hear the start motor whirl round to kick start the V16 into life. Trust me it sounds absolutely incredible. We did "off camera and after filming" turn the volume down a little.
After running in 30 minutes each way on a small test track and filming was done at home. I popped down to my bros to getting it pulling some proper freight, in this case 25 PTA wagons in Foster Yeoman, ARC and VTG livery wagon. Just amazing.
The loco is an amazing bit of model machinery and the Loc Sound V5 sound decoder just really tops it off. Hats off and a massive THANK YOU to Cavalex for producing an incredible loco.
Would I recommend getting one if your layout requires one......Hell Ya...Enjoy.

Cavalex went to the trouble of offering prototypical lighting and you then run with the headlight off 🙄 Some people 😄 I have this same model and can't fault it in any way. Amazing miniature engineering and perfect in every way.

Further to my earlier comment, having run in the 56 I have I coupled it up to 4 container wagons- after a lap and a half of my layout it stuttered, there was a nasty burning smell and it stopped. Whilst the motor is working, the haulage capacity is negligible, presumably a gear problem! Waiting to return it for a replacement

Excellent video thanks. I might have to get one of these, now I have seen and 'heard' the review. Seems as though the speaker set up is the same as in Accurascale 55 and 37s. I noticed the truss bridge on your bro's layout. It looks like the Central Valley Model Works 200ft double track truss bridge kit? I built something similar by stitching the single kits together. One month later the double track kit came out! Just wondering where your brother purchased the kit from as there are no stockist in the UK that I am aware of.

Reasonable discount, but then there is postage and duties. I have already built a totally different lattice deck truss bridge by kit bashing using two of these kits plus other parts. Hoping there will be an article in BRM re this build before long? They are great components so such a pity there ar no CVMW retailers in the UK.

I have the same model but non sound fitted. Still to fully test mine but I note it’s not all wheel drive, and the cab door detail isn’t as good as the Hornby 56 which has opening cab doors, which when shut look much more realistic
@mrmartinb1615
@mrmartinb1615 5 ай бұрын
To be honest I thought it would be an issue as well not being all wheel drive, but for my brothers layout (all on one level) and for the one that I want build I don't think I'll have any issues running full length trains either 36+ HAA coal wagons, 20+ PTA wagons or 20+ HYA wagons. Have fun with it.👍

If I recall correctly, the centre wheel set in the bogie is floating (vertically). This is an excellent idea so there is not chance of the bogie rocking on the centre wheels. This happened on my Accurascale 92 which had to be exchanged. Floating means non driven I reckon. Charlie of Chadwick on U tube had the derailment issue on an ACC 37, so I like the Cavalex route.

@mrmartinb1615
@mrmartinb1615 5 ай бұрын
@@coreygreen4645 Most definitely yes. The only problem is the potential size and where to keep it when not in use. put it this way I have 83 container wagons and I want to run several full length trains, anything from 18 up to around the 35 wagon rakes. I think they would be the longest trains ill have as a jumbo train (20 JHA & 20 PTA) would be a little shorter. So my planned layout is 40 ft by 10 ft ish with approx 5 to 5.5 ft radius corners. Its on paper as of the moment so its a start and not just something I'm thinking about in my head. lol

RULE 1 !!!!! It's seriously not advisable to run model locomotives on the floor. Because the 12v DC motor generates a static field around the locomotive which "sucks in" any loose fibres, hair, dirt, dust, cookie crumbles ! etc etc.... THREE FEET or greater, above the floor is far safer, and will reduce the necessity of dismantling the model to clean the inside of the bogies and locomotive mechanism frequently !! COUPLINGS ! The standard (British) tension lock coupling revealed, tells us the model is fitted with European standard "NEM" coupling pockets. Which means ANY European manufacturers OO/HO couplings can be used, whether Marklin, Fleischmann, Roco, Piko, Lilliput, Hornby, Lima, Rivarossi, Bachmann, etc..etc... If you try and use the alternative "screw link" couplings, to actually haul trains, the problem is that as they are "scale size" so they will greatly reduce the gap between vehicles. Requiring probably curves no less that 4 to 5ft RADIUS, or the buffers will lock/jam in any curve that's tighter, causing derailments !!! WHEEL ARRANGEMENT NOTE: The wheel arrangement stated in the instruction book (A1A-A1A) relates to the model. Which is not clever as this means only four of the six axles are powered. With heavy loads on unrealistically sharp model railway curves (anything less than 4ft 6in) wheel spinning to some degree will occur, which will reduce the life expectantcy of the motor to an increasing degree !!! In real life the Class 56 locos being a heavy freight type, were Co-Co wheel arrangement. Meaning each of the six axles had a traction motor of 550hp. (Total 3,300hp). TRACK RADII Your Kato track measurement of 3ft 6in is the DIAMETER (width across a circle) !!! So the RADIUS is HALF that width, which is 1ft 9in (or around 520mm). So over the 438mm (Radius 2) minimum required. RUNNING - FLYWHEEL RUN ON TEST As this new model has a 5 pole skew armature motor & double flywheels ! It would have been nice to see a "Flywheel Run On" test. This is done by running the locomotive alone, at full speed. Then cutting the power supply completely & instantly, to see how far the model will "coast" thanks to the benefit of the flywheels. Depending on the diameter & weight of these flywheels it may be possible to "coast" for at least a couple of feet, before the loco stops !!!
@mrmartinb1615
@mrmartinb1615 5 ай бұрын
Really interesting again the loco picking up dust, cheers 👍👍. As of the moment I don't have my own layout, but the planned radius curve is around the 5 to 5.5ft. Hopefully meaning I could get away with using the screw link coupling if they could actually pull a full length train. I love that most (if not all wagons and locos) come with that option now. When I first heard about the center wheel not being powered I did have my doubts about it, I think they did this approach to "cater" for people with not so "smooth" track work. The be fair with a weight of over 600 grams and as of the moment, I've had zero issues running full length PTA's trains even running round my bros small layout. There is someone on KZfaq with 4 Cavalex class 56's and he runs a helix and his 56 pulled 40 plus HAA wagons up it with a standing start. I think the channel is Wessex & West. Thank you for all the great info.

@@mrmartinb1615 EXCELLENT NEWS: If you can keep above 5ft radius, then a whole load of other realistic benefits come your way ! You can reduce the gap between tenders & loco to real life (just 1mm gap needed). You can virtually abolish the unrealistic gaps between carriages, so corridor connections almost touch (again just 1mm gap required). Especially with modern coach models fitted with "Flexi-Coupling" plates, and sprung buffers. And of course the larger the radius of a curve means ALL your locos effectively become a LOT more powerful. Because they are no longer fighting the curve which gobbles up as much as 50% of the motors power ! CARRIAGE COUPLINGS: 10 second solution. Pull out the toy coupling & replace it with a real life type "Buckeye" magnetic coupling. Made by KADEE. This company make couplings suited to NEM pockets, so just clip in. These couplings are numbered 17; 18; 19; & 20. Where 17 has the shortest shank, & 20 the longest shank. Being magnetic you can insert invisible Kadee under track magnets, or their above track magnets. If you stop Kadee fitted vehicles above the magnet, & release the tension, then these couplings uncouple automatically. They also work in "delayed" uncoupling mode. Allowing you to propel uncoupled vehicles, without them re-coupling !!! Kadee are stocked by "Gaugemaster/The Engine shed" Model shop, & one or two other model shops. SCREWLINK COUPLINGS: Further the "screwlink" type couplings you mentioned are also made as accessories by Romford in metal, and come with a hidden "spring tensioner" to reduced "snatching". Available from "Wizard Models" and other specialist shops. CLASS 56: 4 wheel Drive system, makes it simpler to produce the bogies & avoid some "gears". With 600g+ of weight it should still pull very well unless you have gradients !! LOADS OF PICS TO HELP YOU ! Pictures & Details of all the above & LOTS more, can be found on my Blogsite. Just type "Basingstoke in OO" which should bring up the site (posted by Blogger). This will reveal my Mk1 version of Basingstoke Station on a 65ft x 30ft layout in the loft of house in Germany - Built between 2008-13. There's pages & pages, with loads of construction details of things like scratchbuilt pointwork & modern 3 aspect signalling. HORNBY UK Type in "Basingstoke 1958-67" & this should bring up my Mk2 Exhibition version layout 87ft x 25ft (Posted on the Hornby Club site). You may have to be a member for full access. But this site shows a load more photos & pics of this version of the layout built in Spain between 2016-20. That lot should keep you happy for days, and you can also use it as Reference material. as there's loads of "How I scratchbuilt it info". Happy modelling.

@@railwaymechanicalengineer4587Ya if I can keep it above 5 ft radius curve I'll be happy and have them tilted aswell. I think the advantage for most people they'll never encounter that problem with tight curves and losing power. Thats really great to know about the Kadee and the carriages. 👍 As and then I start messing around with the screw link couplings I'll find out how strong they really are. I'm thunk the heaviest train physically would be more than likely the jumbo train, I have 17 JHA Foster Yoeman wagons then put 20 Accurascale PTAs on that. If I remember rightly each JHA wagon was about 260 grams or so. So heavy. Lol. Ya I don't think I'll ever have a trouble pulling anything I throw at it and like you say it's heavy enough and it's simpler to produce. 👍 Wow thankyou so much for all the extra info. What's the Web site for your pictures etc. Thank you again. Great help. 👍👍...
