** TODAY'S PUZZLE **
Two years ago RockyRoer, the American math(s) teacher, created a really beautiful puzzle but we couldn't showcase it because our software wouldn't allow it...! But thanks to Sven, our amazing programmer, this sudoku can now be played and solved (You can support him by buying SudokuPad - the software we use for our videos - at the links below). And very clever it is too.
Play the puzzle at the link below:
app.crackingthecryptic.com/su...
Rules:
Normal sudoku rules apply (fill every row/column/3x3 box with the digits 1-9 once each). Numbers outside the grid (which must be deduced) are the sums of the digits sandwiched between the 1 and the 9 in that row or column. Each purple line contains a set of non-repeating consecutive integers. These integers can appear in any order. An integer is any whole number INCLUDING zero.
▶ SUDOKU PAD - Use Our Software For Your Puzzles ◀
You can input classic sudoku puzzles into our software and help support Sven, the programmer responsible for the wonderful user interface we all use to play these puzzles everyday. The app also comes with 12 handmade puzzles from us:

It's beautiful watching Simon missing the most basic sudoku, and then explaining quantum theory in the same solve. It's a Rollercoaster of emotions. Being impressed, being disappointed, laughing at the 12 clue that's sat there for half the puzzle, then realizing I would have been stuck before the puzzle started. Very humbling, yet simultaneously boosting my own ego. Great solve. Great solve. Edit to say: yall need to stop roasting Simon about the ren ban. He knows

For double digit numbers you could also put letters in instead (as you already have done in other puzzles). And then it is quite convenient that the biggest possible clue is 35, which is also the biggest number that can be written using a single "digit" in Base36, i.e. Z. What a coincidence!
@Silvergrooves42

I'd find it confusing above the first few letters. Thankfully, it wasn't really necessary, since we only end up tracking up to about 12 (C in my notation) and the one pair of large numbers ended up being single-exclusions, so they can be easily tracked by the value of the excluded digit.

Right. Not only that, his "proof" was incorrect. You could put a 1 in the very center (r5c5), with 2-8-9 away from it in one direction and 3-7-9 in the other. As you said, you have the renban line preventing that approach, but that's the only reason.
@jeypi6658
@jeypi6658 Жыл бұрын
@@stevezagieboylo9172 incorrect. If, let's say, you have c5 starting with a 10 and going downwards have 7,9,8,2 & 1, then the last digit of the renban in the middle (going left) would be a 3. Then how can you have the renban in the right of r5 add up to 10 if you also need to have 7,8 & 9 on it and can't use 2 or 3 in r5c6 because they're already in that box?
@owensthebomb9273

@@stevezagieboylo9172 his proof was correct, your idea completely breaks the 3 cell renban in box 5. It either has 1 and 3 on it but no 2, or 1 and 2 on it but no 3.

Another way of getting the conclusion at 36:20 is that none of 2, 3, 5, or 9 can be on the "legs" of the blue area, so they all have to fit in the three cells R6C3, R7C3, and R8C4, which is not possible. This has actually been visible for a long time.

I'm so glad that this puzzle was newly recommended, and that Sven's software has evolved to be able to show this (and so many other wonderful things). I enjoyed your solve, Simon, and (despite the purple line prohibiting there from being repeated 0s or 10s as several people pointed out in comments already, as I am writing this) I am glad that you took the time to demonstrate why it would not work even had there not been a purple line joining two salient cells. It may be that sometimes your proofs could be done more simply, but I feel that I have learned a lot from you because of your thorough and complete logical rigor. So, I would say that you *spent* time showing us that, but not that you *wasted* time. Thanks, as always, for your videos. Though not new to the channel, tonight's lovely vocabulary included "nomenclature," "coterie," and my personal favorite, "bamboozled."

Simon does waste a bit of time trying to see if 10's can be put in across from each other in row and column 5. In the rules it states that the integers will be different so the 13 cell RedBan could not possibly have two 10's on it. It could be Simon was just showing the impossibility so that those watching will know the logic behind it. I think the rule alone is all that is necessary for this logic.

Using letters for numbers (like in the very common hexadecimal system for example) is already supported and much tidier than the overhaul that would be required to allow double digit stuff imo. A in hexidecimal -> 10 in decimal B -> 11 C -> 12 etc.

Surprised by the lack of "not 1 or 9" sandwich coloring, feel like leaving in the largely unnecessary blue shading used at the very start just to indicate that the long line contained all the digits maybe unconsciously kept that off the table where it could have been useful at points as stuff started getting filled or penciled in around the edges...

Simon, sometimes it is really helpful to actually write something in instead of shaking your head in disbelief when you can't see a clue that's several steps away... Also it was a fallacy to conclude that 1 could not be on the center bottom right renban, as 4 in the perimeter can very well repeat between 1 and 9. The location of 1 and 9 on the M followed much earlier from the fact that 1 cannot ever be on the perimeter, hence 0 couldn't be on a renban on the perimeter, hence 1 and 9 could not be adjacent in that M.
@joelstevens5670
@joelstevens5670 Жыл бұрын
Took a rather different approach to Simon around the 36 minute mark. If you study column 5 a little, row 4 column 5 must be at least a 3 and row 4 column 6 can only be 1 or 2 (any number higher than that will break the sandwich total). You can now do geometry on the largest renban to prove that the middle 3 digits are whatever is in rows 5 and 6 column 5 plus the 9. This forces the 3 on the same renban into box 8, which stops the 10 clue from being 3 cells. :)

I think in his head he added the 1 by mistake, since the four digits 1,2,3,4 adding up to ten is something he so often mentions during other solves, that his brain just did this unconsciously.

A useful tool for puzzles like this would be a "comments" pencil mark type, maybe in a different color than normal numerical/letter marks, which could just take any short string of characters -- would simplify writing in a multi-digit number as occasionally comes up in puzzles, and would also also other kinds of useful brief notes...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't he just get lucky with an incorrect assertion at 33:50? He said a single-digit sandwich clue at the bottom of column 6 wouldn't work, but couldn't a 4 go in as the sandwich, with 123 on the renban, the 1 being in r7c6 and 4 being in r6c6 just below the 9?

At 20:00 it is not entirely clear that the 10-both-ways solution won't work if the 1 in blue is in R7C5 instead of R5C3. The orientation with respect to the renban in box 5 is different. I suppose his analysis doesn't actually use this renban so it is valid in this position as well, but it deserves saying.

I don't understand Simon's leap of logic at 33:57. Surely the short renban in box 8, can have 1 at the top, 4 at the bottom ( outside the grid), with a 2-3 pair between, and then a 4 in R6C6? Or have I missed something? EDIT: forget that, he corrects himself less than a minute later.

The version linked in the description had the solution embedded in it. It didn't look like the version Simon was solving did. Once a puzzle has been solved, It's possible to generate a new link that contains that final grid as the solution, from within the settings page. I suspect Simon used that to generate a new link, with the solution, to publish in the description.

The easiest way to see that the middle sandwich clues cannot all be 10 is, once placing the 789 triples, noticing that there is no valid digit immediately for the center square without breaking the M region. The same logic can be applied for middle sandwich clues being all 0.

36:50 This deduction might also have been obvious with a bit more pencilmarking in box 5 earlier in the solve. Bit of shouting at the screen here, if the options for the renban and the 10-sum are so limited, why not put the actual options in the grid?
