Sometimes asking for help, and making the full effort to come back from a state of mind that you are a failure is not easy at all. You have to believe in yourself and seriously want to make changes to get back to where you were before the meltdown. That can often mean opening up, being honest about yourself and others you love etc . Then finding a way forward, and even if it shows 3/5 days here it doesn't happen overnight. Other times it can just be a verbal kick on the right direction to be able to INSPIRE the changes that are needed.

Chiarella’s closed in 2015 due to leasing issues with the building. A year after the show was filmed the reviews got much better and business was up 20%. The owners report that the landlord was pushing them out and that they didn’t want/need to close. Such a shame I was really hoping the best for these owners! As a person that suffers from depression my heart went out to Tommy.

You can easily see that Tommy was anxious and suffering from depression the moment he snapped and said "It's my fault". I felt bad for him when he referred to himself as weak and a failure all his life. Working out and getting ripped is his coping mechanism as well as his escape to at least feel good with himself, to somewhat feel accomplished. Just look at how happy he looked when he said "I'm a chef now" and "I'm the boss". Such a sweet soft guy. We should protect him at all cost

Tommy wasn't irresponsible. He's just sad and he needed help. Gordon saw that depression in his eyes. That's why he wasn't really mad at him. You can just see how many time Tommy shakes his hand, fist bumps and hugs Gordon everytime he got his chance. He's just sad and need a little reassurance that he isn't a failure. I'm glad that Gordon sincerely help him. This is one of the most touching episode and without a doubt one of my favorites. Let's spread the kindness.

Depression is insidious. It drives wedges in relationships even as you stand hand-in-hand. Not only does the sufferer draw away, not wanting to be an inconvenience, or stuck in their own thoughts, so often their friends and family do too, unaware of how to help.

I just wanted to give Tommy a huge hug and be his friend. When he 1st appeared, I thought he'd be an aggressive alpha, threatening to knock out Gordon. But instead he was even too scared to confront the kitchen, which he even admitted to Dina on the spot and the only times he flipped, was on himself. Carrying an inner burden that he's a failure and not good enough to be a husband, father, or run a restaurant. I can imagine him downstairs punching walls, imaging its himself he's hitting. Poor guy. You can tell he's a really nice, humble, genuine fella and probably has no other men in his life he can bond with. Thats why he loved Gordon so much and hugged him tight.

A short, sincere statement like that can make a _massive_ difference for someone who's in a dark, stress-filled place in their life. That, and following up by listening to what they have to say, how they feel, what they need right now in terms of support along the way to feeling better and functioning again. Kindness is a deeply undervalued thing - except by those who've seen how impactful it can be.

Feeling like a failure, even when there’s someone you love giving you evidence that you’re not (his wife during the family meeting telling him he’s not a failure he’s got beautiful kids etc etc) it really hits home because I’ve had the same kind of conversation many many times with my fiancé. I wanna give this man a hug, get him a therapist to talk about all those feelings bc boi you can’t hold all of that on your own. I hope he’s doing better now 💜🫂

" Tommy tends to think he is a waiter. He needs to understand that he isn't a worker, he is the owner". Well, the best restaurant I ever went to ... the owner was serving our table. It one of the more expensive restaurants in a European capital city at that. And afterward, when I found out, I asked why and he said "what better way to know what people really think than to see them eat the food with my own eyes?". Honestly...a very fair point.

I think it's a good thing for owners to be hands on and work alongside their employees but only if they're actually helping, y'know? Like I think her point in saying that was that he tries to act like a worker but isn't actually helping at all. I had a general manager at one of my previous jobs that would try to jump in drive-thru and make all these changes and work beside us. She was trying to act like a worker but was messing everyone up, not helping, making our jobs harder, and increasing the drive-thru time. Our other managers could jump in and make things run smoother and faster, they were helpful, that general manager wasn't and I think that's where the difference lies and whether it's a good idea for an owner to work beside their employees as if they were another worker or not

in USA they really separate the roles, in Europe it is not rare to have an owner cook and/or serve, manage, etc etc. In USA, in service industry and many others each role has one person for it

Plus, actually working alongside their employees might keep the owner humble enough to view them as fellow human beings, and their struggles as valid and relatable. I don't at all agree with the strange statement that some people should just "be owners"... why? What good does that do society, for a few of us to just sit on a high chair and bark orders into a megaphone from time to time? I mean, if the situation is such that it is the most effective approach, I guess, but... a lot of the time, it really isn't.

I don't like how they approached this man and his depression. He was probably completly exhausted and needed professional help from a therapist, but instead they cornered him and just kept telling him to get it together. He only probably agreed to stand up to the challange in that one scene at home cuz he felt like everything is on his shoulders and he started feeling guilty so he just kept going. This could've ended badly. I especially didn't like his wife. Instead of actually helping him she just stood doing basically nothing and just kept telling him to get it together and shouting at him to do something, all the time she only cared about herself and kept telling how she needs his old self to come back. If she really loved him she would've started moving her ass and took his place as an owner for the time being (she was too lazy to even learn and do that) while he is resting and taking care of his mental health with the help of a theraphist. But instead she just did nothing. Depression isn't something that just disappears like that and they approached him horribly imo.

I don't have depression myself (thankfully). But from what I know about it, it seemed almost unrealistic that the would suddenly be cured from one positive episode like in this show, when its usually very hard and takes long time to get out of. But I guess it depends on the cause of your depression, if the cause gets solved then maybe... I wouldn't feel to confident that this guy dont get backlash later, but I hope it went well. I also hope his family dont get mad if he does have a backlash and the whole problem isn't finally solved because they told him they love him (even though that's great and probably gave him comfort)

@@miriamelle864 judgement is a normal human thing to do. To say you’ve never judged your loved one is to say you’ve never objectively looked at them. I have JUDGED that the people I keep close to me are worth any pain that might bring me and I have JUDGED those with blatant disrespect or general condescension aren’t worth keeping around as they take more than they give ( emotionally, mentally etc ) I love my mother, but over the years I’ve JUDGED that she has a bit of an exaggeration problem. You can replace it with noticed, or any other synonym, but ultimately it means that using the information you have at your disposal you came to a decision about something. When someone does something bad, like stealing, and then says “ don’t judge me “ they are literally telling you “ don’t base my character off of this one action “ which is ludicrous because they just stole. Literally everything we do is dictated by our subconscious, and our rational JUDGEMENTS about who we interact with, where we go, what we do, we’ve all judged that the things we do are worth the time spent.
