TRANSCRIPT - ABRIDGED:
What is a Goodreads Book Giveaway and how does it work? I recently did a Goodreads Book Giveaway. First off… what is Goodreads?
Goodreads is a social platform that was launched in 2007.
At some point-maybe even from day one, I'm not sure-Goodreads allowed many authors and independent publishers to use the service as well.
Authors can now set up an Author Profile on Goodreads. I have a Goodreads profile and an author profile, so if you're on Goodreads, add me as a friend!
In 2013, Amazon acquired Goodreads. And that connection between Goodreads and Amazon helped make the Goodreads Book Giveaways WAY easier.
Amazon already had a way for authors to self-publish their books to Amazon, BUT doing an ebook giveaway was pretty annoying.
Now that readers and authors exist on Goodreads, and now that Goodreads is OWNED by Amazon… Amazon has oversight of the entire ecosystem.
But, the good news is-for authors and readers-Goodreads now makes it incredibly easy for Goodreads authors to offer the books they've listed on Amazon as a Goodreads Book Giveaway. How does a Goodreads Book Giveaway work? It's actually very easy.
First, you'll need to sign up for a Goodreads account and then set up an author profile. Once that step is complete, all you have to do is purchase a Goodreads Book Giveaway package.
Goodreads Book Giveaway-Kindle or print copies?
If you choose the Kindle option, you can give away up to 100 copies of your book.
The other option is to give away print copies. BUT, just know that if you do, you'll have to handle the fulfillment yourself. Doing a Kindle giveaway costs you nothing extra beyond the cost of the service. Because Amazon owns Goodreads, the winners will get a Kindle copy without you needing to do anything at all.
Offering the Kindle giveaway is a piece of cake, but offering a print version will require extra time and money
And that brings you to the next important choice: the Standard package or the Premium package…
There are only THREE differences between the Standard package and the Premium package as of the recording of this video:
ONE: The Premium package will "feature" your book giveaway in the different categories where your giveaway is listed.
TWO: The premium package allows you to customize the email sent to people who didn't win.
And THREE: The Premium package is almost $500 MORE than the Standard package.
You do have to enter the time frame for when and how long the giveaway will be offered.
One thing I'll note that I didn't know… when you set the start date, Goodreads requires a short 1 to 3 day period so they can review the book giveaway details before the book is officially listed.
Goodreads Book Giveaway Costs:
As of the writing of this video, the Standard package costs $119. The Premium package is currently listed at $599.

Nice! Hopefully, they’re all great books. The authors will be incredibly happy if you read them and review them on Goodreads!

Thank you for the informative video; your explanation was clear and helpful. However, I'm a bit puzzled about the suggestion to avoid hosting a giveaway without first testing the book with an audience. My primary goal in planning a book giveaway is to gather reviews and feedback to gauge the quality of my book, whether positive or negative. Currently, my audience is limited to just my friends. If I can get at least 100 people to read it, I would be in a much better position to assess my book. Do you have any other videos or resources that provide guidance on how to effectively reach and engage an audience to assess if a book has potential or needs improvement?

I love this question. And I really like your idea. If you're going to test your book with an audience who you don't know, then I highly recommend changing the book and creating a new edition once you gather the feedback you need. Why? Because when these strangers review your book, those reviews will be attached to that version of the book. The problem with that is that a lot of people will sign up for book giveaways even if they don't like the genre or type of book they receive. So, your book could get bad reviews. But that's not a problem if you're going to release an updated edition later after you gather feedback. As to how to find readers, that's just a process of reaching out to people who you know like the type of book you're writing and then asking them to read it and provide feedback. You can find people online or through your current connections. Good luck and thanks for watching!
