Probably the greatest combat jet ever produced, by any country. The Buccaneer had everything and could do almost anything. Back when Britain knew what it was about!

I made an Airfix Buccaneer back in the early 60s, although I am sure it didn't have the detail yours has. Then in 1966 I started an apprenticeship at Hawker Siddeley Brough, and had a go at building real Buccaneers.

That panel down below, as you call it, was the rear avionics hatch, where lots of the electronic systems were located on the Buccaneer. I think it was not well liked by the avionics tradesmen, and referred to as the hell hole. Tells you all you need to know.

@@ModellingWeekly It is a dialectric panel for the doppler nav system, although it is on a rather large removable panel. The normal access hatch is to the rear of it, between it and the hook mounting. That was a much smaller losenge shaped hatch that you had to lift yourself into to do various maintenance, such as change the LOX bottle, check fin spar bolts, and various other things as well as giving access to various lectrickery, and giving ample room once fully inside for a quick nap. On the ground, it was left open before flight. As for Avionics tradesmen, they never liked getting their hands dirty ;)

Just watched your above build, really great and very informative!!. You seem to have painted all surfaces (for example the cockpit, seats etc) and then glued them paint/paint. What glue did you use please, standard cement normally doesn't glue painted surfaces. Recently switched to Humbrol acrylic paint; these however do not come in the same variety as enamels, Any recommendations for extending the Humbrol acrylic range compatible with another manufacturer; Warhammer has an extensive range but is difficult to find an equivalency chart. To date I've been using brushes, airbrushing seems to use a lot of paint and a lot of effort to clean after each operation, guess the solution would be to build in aircraft batches i.e 4/5 different cockpits at the same time? Again great instructional video, it'll encourage me to go the extra mile (kilometer as I'm living in France) to add some details. krgds William ps looks like your email address doesn't work
@ModellingWeekly
@ModellingWeekly 2 жыл бұрын
Hi! Glad you found the video helpful. Here are answers to your questions: 1. Just normal liquid cement, as airbrushed layers are so thin it just goes straight through them. However, super glue is a good alternative if poly cement isn't working. 2. www.modelshade.com/paint-conversion-chart - online paint conversion table. Hope this helps! 3. Surprisingly airbrushing is actually very paint efficient, especially using Vallejo dropper bottles (no waste) - if you think about it, it makes a lot of sense - airbrushed paint layers are microns thick, whereas handbrushed layers are much thicker thus using more paint. As for cleaning, it's annoying but once you get into a rhythm it's fast and easy. Also helps to have an airbrush with good seals/passages (avoids leaking paint). 4. if you are referring to contact@modellingweekly.co.uk, that's very odd! It should be working fine...what leads you to believe it's faulty? Thanks very much again!

Thanks 😊 I'm afraid so in my case. I'd say the biggest problem was the join between the fuselage mid section and the tail section - there was quite a bit of deformity here, almost as if it was a molding error, but regardless they didn't really match up and I had to use quite a bit of filler

Hi There , would you please let me know what thinner do you use for the oil wash ? I am using AV paint, same as you , and tied Abteilung oil paint with AK extreme thinner and cleaner on tester (without gloss vanish). Oil wash put on fine but when clean up using the same thinner, it break through underline paint. may be it is too strong, as it is thinner /cleaner. I may consider Mig thinner for wash, zippo liquid or white spirit. Not quite sure which one is the best to work with AV paint ? Thanks

Panel lines in scale? Nowhere near to it. Maybe if those were 1/4th width and depth. This is one of the main areas where Airfix must improve. The other is the quite primitive cockpits. The seats just simply underwhelming, but close to reality. Otherwise not a bad kit at all. The paint or the varnish is this gritty?

@@ModellingWeekly Don't get me wront, still a very good looking build. Maybe the camera and the lighting pick up the orangepeel this bad. Despite my problems with some aspects of the kit I will definitely build it. The Buccaneer is a good looking ugly craft. It was strange how that varnish sprayed. Maybe it needs more pressure or dilution. Maybe you should try reflow the clearcote. After clearcoting somewhat clean the airbrush, and fill it with some thinner, and spray the whole clearcoted model with it. It reactivates the clearcote and helps it to level itself, and reduce the orangepeel on it. Most of the time this method is enough against the excessive orangepeel. It works almost every type of clearcote, maybe the "real acrylic" ones are the exception. But with laquers and enamels it works fine. By the way, I thin the enamels with laquer thinner mix, not with white spirit. For reflow it is definitely better. (I don't use "factory" thinners such as Mr. Color Levelling Thinner. I mix it myself from hardware store laquer thinner and IPA, with 1:2 mix, but probably it needs more IPA, and some Tamiya Paint Retarder Laquer Type. "Factory thinners" have a smell much more like IPA, my mix is almost entirely laquer thinner in smell. Those premixes use 1:8 or even higher mixing ratio toward IPA. More IPA means faster drying.) Or if you a bit overdedicated, you can sand and polish it. I did it with my Hobby Boss F9F-3 Panther (1/72), and it turned to be insane. Maybe it's overkill to do with an aircraft, but the result... I used Gunze paint (H-55) and polished it too. Well, I sprayed it in so thin layer that even the Tamiya Finish Polishing Compund removed it in some places. OK, repaint in those places, repolish. After that clearcote (Gunze GX-100 with 1:3 thinning), decals, clearcote. Sanding back the decal film steps and clearcoting again. And then the fun of full wet sanding (Tamiya 1500 and 2000 Sanding Sponges) and polishing with Tamiya Compunds (Fine and Finish). And now it is mirrorlike. Except the scratches... Totally unneccessary for an aircraft in my opinion, but it was fun. I love to experiment. The whole project started with the sanding of the plastic itself. Hobby Boss and Trumpeter kits have a gritty surface, and it's not really appealing, especially if you want to paint it gloss. For an armor kit it's not a problem, but for aircrafts it is.

I'm not so sure its correct to use grey paint to highlight the maintenance access panels. On real aircraft if behind a panel is a 'dry service' then panels are just secured in place with screws etc. If an access panel is to a fuel tank, then the gaps around panels are sometimes sealed with 'PRC' which is a rubber polymer that chemically reacts and dries. It is brown in colour. Even then fuel panels aren't always sealed in this way. Indeed if a panel hasn't been removed or doesn't require regular removal then it will be simply be painted over along with the gap between the panel and the rest of the aircraft structure. Then at best you might get a slightly dark line/shadow, certainly not grey. Ex aircraft engineer
