20:31 The reason there were Nintendo games on CD-i was because Phillips was working with Nintendo on a CD add-on for the Super Nintendo that ended up getting canceled. Part of the deal was that Phillips would be allowed to use Nintendo characters for their own console

This game is lovely! Excited to see you guys playing it. The intro is so perfect, poor Arzette seems like she's aware she's stuck in a janky mysticbabble fantasy story, while everyone else is just perfect expies from the CDI games. The music and aesthetic are spot on, the voices are great. I appreciate they even ran with the duke's punishment of "scrubbing all the floors in Hyrule" as a background point.

Funny story about the conversation at 20:46 , Nintendo and Sony were originally going to work together on a CD system. But Nintendo went back on it and instead did the CDi deal. We all know how that turned out for Nintendo and Phillips. But what happened to Sony? Well actually it was the work they had started doing when planning to collab with Nintendo that led to the original Playstation. So, suffice to say that wasn't Nintendo's brightest move ever.

The wackiest part was that Sony and Nintendo patched up their relationship in ‘92 and the Nintendo PlayStation was almost back on the menu. Ken Kutaragi, who headed the project, convinced the board that Sony would be able to make a better console and bring it to market sooner when working alone and the deal fell through again.

Nintendo gave Philips the rights to make some zelda games because they partnered with philips to try to make a CD attachment for the snes. Also the original PlayStation was going to be a SNES attachment, until Nintendo went behind Sony's back and partnered with philips, only telling Sony they werent partnering with them anymore after publicly announcing the Philips deal. At least one mostly working prototype of the Nintendo PlayStation still exists. The whole story about how Nintendo basically made Sony into a competitor is really interesting.

I genuinely thought this was another CD-i game that they finally got their hands on so they could compare it to the Zelda CD-i games. I was like dang this really shows how bad the zelda ones were because this looks so good! But to learn that this is a new release as a spiritual successor to those games is insane. It's executed so well and faithful to the feeling of those CD-i games but genuinely looks fun and smooth and has bangin music. What a triumph of a game.

I love how they made the actual gameplay not nearly as much of a pain while still keeping the incredibly obtuse story with weird names and the artstyle. This game is great stuff, it's just the CDI games but even better.
