Welcome Gardeners! I think Josephine Nuese said it best: “Anyone who thinks gardening begins in the spring and ends in the fall is missing the best part of the whole year; for gardening begins in January with a dream.” January is a time to hunker down and plan out your gardening season. It’s a time that I can actually get organized, and plan out what I want to do out in the garden. It’s one of my favorite times of the gardening season, and it is the beginning of my excitement for the new garden year to come. 🌸 Enjoy!

Ohhh Janey, I love this so much! One of my favorite gardening tasks is dreaming/nerding out on the upcoming season. Thank you for the printable schedule - its great! Is there any way you can share your Notion calendar with us as well? As a fellow Davis/Zone 9b gardener, it would be super helpful to be able to take guidance from your schedule. Thank you for all of the inspiration you provide to us. Happy New Year!

I can’t believe I’ve never thought to have a gardening calendar! I can be gone 15 hrs a day for 4-5 days in a row for work. Once I’m off, plants are stressed or I forgot to bring something inside on a cold night. This would help me so much. Thanks for the inspiration!

Yeah, when I 1st started gardening 35 yrs ago, I was very organized. Over the years, my obsession with plants threw any planning out the window. Plus knowing what to do with every plant was simple research and I just went from there. I probably should try to get back to some organizing tho. Thanks Janey for the memories.lol.

What a coincidence that the word “plan” is in “plant” 😀. A helpful video, thank you Janey! I really enjoy the scheduling side of gardening. It’s helpful to keep track and look back at all the work that was done and reflect on the evolution of the garden. I do tend to go a little overboard putting stickers on my planner/calendar. I add hummingbird stickers on the days I’m lucky to see one. I add deer stickers every time I’m unlucky and they’ve nibbled my hydrangeas. I’m running out of deer stickers! 🦌🇨🇦

I am so excited and inspired by this session, Janey! I am planning a minor overhaul of my garden this year; sort of a ‘mullet’ strategy! I will expand on ornamentals in the front and natives in the back with a heavy emphasis on pollinators, birds and wildlife support! Your discussion got me jazzed to take down Christmas and start planning not only the new look, but how I will care for it! Thanks!

Definitely far too constricting for my style of gardening, and I know this wouldn’t work for me - I have tried it. However, I can definitely see the value in having some kind of structure when it comes to tackling gardening jobs. I remember watching this youtube channel called ‘Clutterbug’ which deals with home organisation, and taking a test to assess my organisation style.Turns out I’m a Ladybug whereas you seem to be definitely a Cricket. I found it very enlightening and was able to understand why a more free-flowing approach works better for me, in the home as well as the garden. Great video. Greetings from England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Happy New Year! Thank you for sharing how you keep it all organized throughout the year! I have a two acre property and I learned pretty early on that transportation and motion waste will eat up a good chunk of time I have available to spend outside. So I do a combination of zoning and task planning. For zoning I do things like weeding, pruning, dead heading, planting and seasonal fertilizing or spraying. I have a general idea at the point at what time of year to do most tasks (e.g. horticulture spray crab apple trees monthly during the winter months, prune roses when the forsythias bloom, prune spring flowering trees after they bloom, etc.) but if I’m not sure I’ll look something up. For tasks that are more efficient to do the whole property at one time (e.g. weekly fertilization or deer spraying), I have a specific day I do that every week. I don’t do a lot of seeds at this time, if did I would definitely need a calendar.

Lots of good tips here. I am not one to plan and make schedules for myself. I use Google calendar to remind me of gardening tasks. I made a whole new garden last year when I went lawnless. I have some more planting to do, evergreen and low water/maintenance. I have lots of perrenials that add color. So this year is maintenance and grooming. I'm sure I will spend significant time pulling up bermuda grass. The best thing is to get out there often to keep up with it. I am also zone 9b about 3 hours down the 5 from you.

So informative! And thank you for linking us to your garden calendar. I so enjoyed your Zone videos; I am in Zone 10, So. California, and would really like to hear more from those gardeners. Between you (Zone 9) and Laura (Zone 6) I've been both inspired to garden (plants/bushes/cypress) and learned how to keep them alive and thriving. Not organized as you ladies are, but even with just a narrow flower bed surrounding the pool, and 50 various sized potted plants, I am aware they need more than just water! BTW, I love those purple fountain grasses you grew in the zig-zag border; they just "make" that border and the dichondra is also a keeper! Have you considered Gerber daisies. Where I live they are hardy rascals as long as they are watered (in summer) every day. I so look forward to watching your garden develop in 2024!

Hi Janey, happy new year ! I don't think I'm good at planning...usually I get out in the garden and that's then the ideas pop out. But I think I need to get organised on pruning times because I have so many different kind of plants, their pruning seasons are different. I don't really like to fertilise with not natural materials unless the plant is in a pot/container so usually it goes like "oh, it's been some time I didn't do it, I think they might need something", or when the leaves change colour because they lack of something. But my garden is more the size of your previous garden and it's not my job :)

We live on 3 acres, and I have 5 flower gardens, mostly Proven Winners flowers. I have mapped them out in powerpoint, mainly to remember what is planted where. I just use a shape tool to put in the name of the plant, and then shade it the color of the plant. It works fine, but really want something more. What you have described is perfect.
