Disney California Adventure Park has seen more changes than most parks in the 18 years since it opened, from the spectacular Cars Land to the thematically confusing Pixar Pier. But have all of these changes made California Adventure a fitting second gate for Disneyland?

I wish DCA still had the Aladdin show but at least Broadway has an Aladdin musical. I'm a few months younger than DCA, it's nice that they're making the park better than it was on opening day

Avery the Cuban-American I'd say it's a fair change, Disney needed some way to exploit frozen in their parks and this was the easiest way

What my family of 5 did was buy a 3-day pass, went to both parks. Only used 2 days, went back for a day later. Used a hotel away from the park, made our own food and stored everything in those huge lockers by the bathrooms near the entrances. Went to younger kid's rides so they were happy before heading out to DCA with the teens, so everyone could gave fun...and parked in the Toy Story parking lot to avoid the cluster f%^& of Disney on site parking... BOOM

Am i the only one that loves current dca? Like I think of it as disney IP living in California environments which keeps its feel of it being in California with piers and Hollywood land and redwoods while also having the touch of disney. Examples being what if the pixar characters lived on a california pier. My biggest gripe is the amount of similar ride systems with 3 spinning rides in the exact same corner of the park.

It's still crazy to believe Tokyo Disney Resort is arguably the best Disney Resort in the world yet a day ticket is half the cost of the US based Disney parks. It's probably why we're thinking of going back to Tokyo next year for Beauty and the Beast but won't be back at Disneyland for probably 5 years. - Luke

@rct3isepic
@rct3isepic 4 жыл бұрын
I gotta disagree. Paradise pier even in the second iteration to me always felt like seeing a classic pier in modern times. Pixar Pier to me feels like a time warp to when the pier was in its hay day. I love the more vibrant colors and watching it light up at night is just magical for me. I understand why someone wouldn't like the change, but I personally love it.

It's a super hard question to answer just because DCA is part of the larger Disneyland Resort. Grew up in SoCal. DCA of course was the original parking lot. So much better. Faster and easier to access Disneyland. You got a real sense of excitement walking towards the gate, instead of a ride that takes you right to it. I don't know, it just doesn't feel right. But I digress... DCA never felt right to me, never felt completed. Sure there were some great new attractions, Tower of Terror, , etc. But slowly these have been changed to fit the greater Disney merchandising machine, and things just don't feel right. It doesn't feel like a Disney park to me.

When I first visited this park in 2014, I actually preferred this park over Disneyland. Perhaps the ride collection they had could be the reason for that considering that it has some of my favorite rides that Disney has ever built. For example, Grizzly River Run is my second favorite raft ride out there, Toy Story Mania is my favorite shooting dark ride out there, Radiator Springs Racers is an underrated dark ride, Soarin' never gets old no matter whether you're talking about the original California version or the new Around the World style, Incredicoaster, back when it was California Screamin', was the best roller coaster I had ever ridden and World of Color is my favorite nighttime Disney show.

The last time I went to Disneyland/DCA was just after Cars Land opened up.....it was an awesome experience, just like walking through the movie as you said, haven't been to either park in a long time (which is a bummer because I live 10 minutes away from the park), so I cant say much about Pixar Pier but even if its a bit of a mess/cluster of ideas, as long as you feel immersed in all things Disney I think its fine

Hello Luke from 2019, it's Phil from spring 2020, wondering if the parks will ever open up again... And YES! Phantom Manor would fit in beautifully, and as the exterior is loosely based on the Winchester Mystery House, a quirky roadside attraction in San Jose, it fits right in. Or an indoor water adventure. They already have the rapids ride, so this would be The Jungle Cruise meets a desert people's abandoned temple...If the Colorado river ran through temples. But I have no problem with them cloning rides- either same ride system but different stories and scenery, or duplicates like Ratatouille coming to Epcot. If both US parks didn't have original Pirates, I'd love to have a Shanghai version of that one in Florida or California! I bet DCA could support a modified Pirates. And a western themed log flume.. Kids would love to beg Dad for parkhoppers to be able to ride both Pirates or log flumes. I sure would.

I personally love DCA even as 1.0, although I was a kid so it feels nostalgic to me, people somewhat exaggerate how bad it was, I do agree that DCA 2.0 from 2008-2015 is way better but at this point it's a mishmash of ideas and it all just feels so convoluted. They never should've made tower of terror guardians of the galaxy themed or soaring over California lose its entire identity or even cheaply redo paradise pier into Pixar pier. They had a great thing young for a while where a land just had to be based off California, but didn't have to be its whole identity. Personally I think paradise pier, grizzly peak, cars land, and buena vista street were perfect, but work did need to be down in Hollywood land but they could've done it tastefully, well RIP DCA 2.0

DCA IMO has only gotten better over the years; although, I think the park should be renamed. I would also like to see an expansion to the park. I agree that a Mystic Manor type ride would be good but I would go with more of a Ripley's Believe It or Not type theme/vibe which could also make use of the the leftover ideas for the Museum of the Weird that was originally going to be a side attraction to the Haunted Mansion.

keep it noted the reason it’s probably hard to find California themed merchandise and why the park is not really enhancing the California theme is because it didn’t work the first few years to have a Cali themed park in Cali... so now they’re focused more on the “adventure” part of “California Adventures” instead of the “California” part.

One of the biggest complaints about DCA is that they don't have just one cohesive theme. What are they trying to be? California in California? Disney's IP Landfill? Or something else? Some places like Pixar Pier and Avengers Campus seem to take the 'Disney's IP landfill' route, while places like Grizzly Peak and Buena Vista Street seem to take the 'California in California' route.

I love the intro because it completely encompasses my feelings about DCA. When it opened, it was just awful and did not feel like a Disney park. DCA 2.0 was a beautiful way of justifying the California theme, in California, by making it the classic CA from the 1920’s with the entrance and boardwalk, but once they started putting in IP like Pixar Pier and Avengers Campus, it just took away the beauty that they built in 2.0. The gaudiness of Pixar Pier is at least thematically better than when it opened, but is still a bit jarring.

I feel like it's a lot easier to get a "fastpass" for World of Color, I was there in May well before schools were out for the summer, and they were out of fastpasses for the early show within 30 minutes. Having a 3 year old means I'm not waiting until the 10pm show either, now luckily we squeezed into a space near the bridge where Pirates is and had a great viewing experience, but yeah WoC feels more inspirational than Fantasmic which is a lot more boom, kaplow, NOISE!

78 out of 100 sounds like a failure for something that costs as much as Disney does. I feel like some scores were a bit too generous, affordability should have been way lower, and theming should have been lower too. My last trip was a 4 day, 1 park per day, trip with my little one, and we spent 1 day at DCA, because at his height there didn't feel like there was as much to do in the park as across the way at Disneyland.

it's no longer "California" adventure, just a hodgepodge park with odd themes and the ferris wheel is not fun. it starts and stops to let riders on and off and the rolling cars are frightening to say the least. To me, California adventure remains pretty underwhelming. Cars Land is incredible and the Frozen show is surprisingly competent. Other than that, most rides have better versions elsewhere. Even the complete lack of theming for Soarin' is disappointing. The Tokyo Disney Sea versions of Tower of Terror and Soarin' are better in every way.

0:32 the hell is going on here? anyway, DCA is basically a pixar themed strip mall with county fair level rides where you have to pay car payment to get inside. and with $12 churros. what you could do for the same price: drive about an hour to santa monica pier for the same shit AND you get to relax on the bech. hell, if you want rides, go west for 20 minutes from disney and visit Knotts Berry Farm and it'd STILL be much cheaper - almost half of whatever you spend at disney parks. and the churros were 8 bucks iirc.

Only because the kids of today (at least those of the greater Los Angeles variety) generally don't relate to old-school amusement parks (though created in the 1990's, Pacific Park is a throwback to the old Santa Monica/Venice boardwalks of yesteryear) as they were all demolished by the late 1970's (also to a lesser extent in Florida). Only old-timers (not to mention those from the rest of the country/world--who still have respect for history) have any idea of an era before Disneyland, let alone California Adventure.

I think they need to just crush paradise pier and put something there with amazing scenery that blocks the view of outside the park. Maybe that’s why they did a cheap Pixar pier, it’s just temporary until they get rid of it for good. I can only dream haha

You're much too nice on California Adventure park. Unlike Disneyland, it has no real themed "lands" as much as Disneyland anyways. It seems like it's randomly filled with rides that don't fit into any areas that've been dumped wherever -- somewhat like Universal Studios. The Ariels Undersea Adventure "Littlest Mermaid" ride is basically a rip off of The Haunted Mansion transport system from Disneyland. It just seems very unimaginative to use the same transport system of another ride, then scoop out the contents with a movie you want to cash in on. Walt Disney was about innovation. And I see innovation clearly lacking in these attractions or "rides". Switching the "tower of terror" which featured the Twilight Zone into the "Guardians of the Galaxy" IP is another good example. It's like they just take these rides, scoop out the replaceable contents, and voila. It's just highly unimaginative and it just reeks of a cashgrab. Could you imagine Disney scooping out "It's a Small World" ride with some popular movie of the moment and getting rid of the dolls? That's how ridiculous I see this. And they are just pushing their movies and whatever franchises happen to be making them alot of money at the time. Maybe I should be holding my tongue, because when I visited in 2012, Radiator Springs "Cars land" ride was still under construction. But I don't think that would change alot of the feeling I had. I have no problem with random rides side-by-side, but what I see is laziness to innovate.

wakeupscreaming I love how you complain about Ariel’s undersea adventure ripping haunted mansion’s ride vehicle systems considering that haunted mansion’s system was a rip-off from the adventures through inner space ride from 1967 tommorowland

That’s exactly what they’re now gonna do with splash mountain. A scoop out of an original ride, in a land it doesn’t fit in

eh, disneyland isn’t scary. i just dont recommend snow white, any roller coasters, (except gadgets go coaster, it’s super boring) drop rides like guardians of the galaxy, or those spinning rides (also dont go on the ferris wheel) also you can choose not to meet any characters
