Love watching the new life on your homestead!!! The first I watched one of your videos I told my husband that you two are living my lifelong dream, at first he was not so sure. At the time we were living in a neighborhood with very small lots we had a small patio and that was it for a back yard. We have now moved to a house with 1 acre and are growing our first garden and have some chickens. My husband has caught the bug to live on a homestead of our own. Thank you for the inspiration!!! Maybe some day we will be able to have a larger place.

Kevin and Sarah have you ever thought about raising mealworms for your chickens and ducks. I raise them to feed my turtle but I have so many now that I give a lot to my brother for their chickens. I started with ordering 500 mealworms and in the 6 months that I've been raising them I now have thousands of them. You should look into raising them for a cheap protein treat for your chickens and ducks. God bless your family. 🐇🐔🐮🐷🐣🦆🐛

So much excitement! Kevin, don’t refer to your down time as ‘Rest’ it’s ‘Healing’ and healing is hard work for your body!!!! Give your body the time it needs to do it’s job! Every job takes the time it takes, even healing! The new chicks and plants and calves are such a sign of new life! So encouraging, and appropriate for this Easter Season coming up! I just LOVE spring. Great idea dividing the moat! Wish I were closer so I could come to the farmers market for your plants! Thank you for sharing your talents and time!

Love watching baby calves. We have about 80 brood cows and the calves run and play like children. So relaxing to watch! You have helped me so much with your gardening tips. I retired in 2020 and have always loved gardening, but really didn't have time when working. My Mom said she was never closer to God than when on her knees in the garden!

I'm so excited to be getting some Bresse chickens the beginning of April. I took your advice and ordered some too. I got them from a different farm from MS and I ordered some Black Bresse and some Splash Bresse. The Splash Bresse are black and white. They are so pretty. I've never raised chickens before, never homesteaded before. Every since I can remember, I've wanted to. I'm 51 and my husband and I moved to NE this year and our family is renting a little house in the country. We are so excited to start this journey (FINALLY) of raising our own food and having some animals. This year, we are staying with a garden and chickens. I've been watching you guys for about 4 years. Thank you for all that you do. You're an inspiration.

Glad to hear Kevin's ankle isn't broken, although sometimes a bad sprain takes longer and hurts far worse than an actual break. Ice, elevation and time. In my experience it'll always hurt, even after healing, especially in colder climates. Be safe and God Bless! 🙂

Exactly! A sprain can be much worse than a break. (The muscle that is sprained has a lesser blood supply than a bone, and heals slower.)

You both are Right! Thats what I had, sprained ankle (purple foot), hurt the tendons, ligaments & muscles. Drs told me I was better off with a broken bone, and I would have a permanent limp! I did what sports Drs do: nightly epsome soak & 10min massage, keep it wrapped & supported (tight, flat boots) while walking/standing on it. Took a year to fully heal but its been as good as new.

Love seeing the calves. Our area the farmers are finishing up harvesting winter vegetables and burning sugar cane fields. If the weather stays the onions will be harvested in a couple weeks. It so much fun watching the seasons change here.

I am always so happy to hear you explain any changes/improvements you make to your homestead, such as your choice of new chicken breeds. I live in the city and have no hope of getting any chicks, but I appreciate you sharing the knowledge you've acquired through your research. I also found most interesting your explanation of why and how you are dividing the poultry "moat". I've heard a few stories about the avian flu but had no real idea about what you could do to protect your flock. Thank you for this most informative video. Hoping your ankle will continue to heal, Kevin, and you can put all of your pent-up energy into planning even more improvements to the homestead. God bless.

Those cows & calves are so pretty!! God is so awesome!! He made animals where they just do what they do without hospitals or anything else. They have their babies, & then those babies get up & walk & eat without any help!! We humans are whimps 😄😄 I'm thankful you are healing, Kevin. God bless y'all!

18 months to heal a bone, 36 months to fully heal a muscle. As you can tell, a fully functioning ankle is important fkr quality of life. A brace, continued icing, keeping the inflammation down, allowing for the torn and stretched muscles to heal so you dint do undue wear and tear on your bone and other parts, keeping braced and using shoes/ boots fir support so you dint mis-step and do further damage, and when ready walking and strengthen activity. Your 60, 70, and 80+ year old self will thank you.

Glad to hear your ankle is not broken! My daughter is recovering from a broken fibula just above the ankle and soft tissue injuries. The physical therapist said broken bones heal faster than soft tissue injuries, and to expect the swelling to last for months. Elevate and ice are her relief, along with the boot and ankle brace. Take it easy Kevin....I am sure much easier said than done.

I am thinking of doing the same thing. I have milk in my freezer from last year. I have been gradually pulling it out one bag at a time and giving it to the chickens. They LOVE it! So much, that now when I go out to the coop area I have a "following" of chickens. LOL

When my husband started buying Angus cows, I would name them. I started naming them alphabetically (that's how my parents named my siblings and me...the first four anyway; my youngest sister got an A name). After I completed the alphabet, I started naming them after friends, relatives, and tv characters. At one point we had the whole cast of Gunsmoke, which was my husband's fav show! We had a "Fannie."

I love welcoming spring with you on the farm and in the fields with the cows. It was interesting to learn about the avian flu and how it affects ducks and chickens differently. I have seven American Bresse hens and one rooster, and I’ll be adding more this spring as we get moved onto the farm. As chicks, they were little gladiators, and were as heavy as fluffy little anvils. They are fierce, fierce foragers and our hens started laying at 18 weeks. These chickens will NOT be ideal to mix into the average small backyard coop unless you don’t like the birds you already have. The down side with them is that they’re just not good around smaller birds, or younger Bresse. You have to be careful mixing sizes, because the big ones start hunting chickens instead of bugs. Our birds are in a backyard coop for the moment but we are taking them up to our farm in ne mo and getting more, and we’ll be running them in poultry nets and chicken tractors in a pastured system behind cattle. My starter flock is from Greenfire Farms, but I ordered several more boxes of 25 each from Chase Washburn at the Recreational Homestead. He’s putting up some quality information on his channel as well. Good luck, I hope you are as impressed with the Bresse as we are.

I'm glad Kevin's ankle isn't broken. That being said a soft tissue injury can take a long time to heal. (Ask me how I know!) The Bresse and Maline chickens sound like good breeds for a homestead. And I hope you get mostly heifer calves this year. I can't wait to see the new garden. I am really looking forward to this year's videos. I think you are well on your way to sustainability.

We had bought a heifer years ago who's mother was named Cracker Jack, so we named her Karmel Korn. I always let an animal go nameless for a little while so I can study it and it's traits before I name them. My husband was BBQing one day years ago and had the charcoal bag laying in it's side on the stairs. We had gotten a new kitten and she was still nameless. My son-in-law saw that the kitten was curious and started crawling in and around the charcoal bag. My son-in-law said "I think "Smokie" would be a good name for you." It's almost 15 yrs. later and she has become an "office" kitty! Needless to say, MANY cows, goats, chickens, ducks, geese, pigs, dogs and cats have gotten their names in that manner. Our goat doe Honeysuckle Rose had a doeling we named Ramblin' Rose. Sometimes the "theme" continues. Spring is definitely the "fun" time of the year.

I've NEVER seen a cow/bull or counterparts ever rub as if to spread scent like that cow w/calf was doing coming out of the ditch or creek??? What was she doing??? Congratulations on the baby... what a big boy!!! Yeahhhhh!!!! Take the time you need Kevin, the older we all get the longer it takes to heal and get plain ol better, and IF YOU DON'T TAKE THAT TIME.... you WILL pay later somehow. So please rest, give yourself the time now so the repair doesn't TAKE your time later. Blessings

Everything looks great! So thankful that Kevin's ankle is healing up quickly. 🙌 A quick note. If you keep heifers only from the 1st 2 cycles during the breeding period you will have more fertile cows. Keeping heifers from the 3 cycle & beyond greatly reduces their fertility.

Calves are the sweetest looking little faces on a farm to me, then pigs and wee little ducks. Pigs make me laugh and I love the sound of chickens in the yard . I am not crazy about any of the smells but I got used to it as a kid.

start adding the "duck grass" from your ponds to the milk/feed and this will help reduce amount of feed needed to satisfie the birds. duck weed can also be used to feed the pigs when mixed into their feed.....

So grateful to hear it wasn't broken: prayers answered! As someone with weak ankles and having my share of very bad sprains - I found if I keep a medical boot around, it's been invaluable for quicker healing. You're able to walk with so much less discomfort too (it's a full boot that goes almost up to the knee, with straps). The doctor doesn't usually give it to you, but years ago a doctor gave one to my friend - it's been a godsend since! All the best!

Congrats on the non-break. As someone who's been there, done that, RICE! Rest as much as possible, keep up on the antiinflammatories, and follow doctor's orders. 💜 Wish I was closer to y'all because Michigan is kinda a hike, but those plants look beautiful! God bless you all!

Good to hear you are getting better, Kevin. I think a sprain takes longer to heal. I know it's not easy, but the secret to healing a sprain is getting off it, elevating and heat or ice. A few years ago , I had a bad fall in a grocery store and had to be transported to the ER by ambulance. Take as much time as you are able to heal for the future and your family. Of course, I didn't have a farm to run with my family. The calfs are so cute. I love how they bring life and renewal to everything 🙏 ❤

Glad to hear that you didn't break your foot. I have done that,and it seems to have NEVER healed even after 3 surgeries. I prayed you had NOT broken it and that it heals completely! 🙂 OH MY GOODNESS

Thank u Kevin and Sarah for sharing your lives but also for being so thorough and careful with the information u give/teach us. I can’t even count the number of things I’ve learned from watching ur channel and I need u to know that I appreciate u! Take time to heal Kevin, this way u won’t have as much trouble with that ankle down the road. So very glad it is not broken… u will be back on ur feet in no time if u stay off of it. Prop it on a couple pillows every night w some ice on it. Take a Motrin or some anti inflammatory. Ugh I know… worst time of year to be down w an injury. I’m so sorry but remember, like u said… it could’ve been much worse. Thank god!! U guys rock! Cya next vid! Take care!

worked with my Uncle for a year some 50 years ago, milking herd around 120, heifers around 18, dry run around 30, and 18 calves. All had names and he knew them all by sight. 3 bulls also.

I noticed #9's "high tail" when you first showed her...interesting, but can't wait till you give her a name on video. My Portuguese step-dad grew up raising dairy cows in California, he and his sister always talked lovingly about their"white-faced" calves! It makes me happy to see your farm and animals, love the chickens too! The geese, well they do taste good, but a bit meaner than chickens, I was excited to remember your previous chicken video about French Bresse and how you were planning your new flock...I was looking for their blue legs even before you showed them, you are both good educators! I am living proof of that! My cousins live out that way, I hope they go to see you at the farmer's market! Thank you for all your videos, I need the diversion..

So glad your ankle isn't broken! I broke mine in 5 places and it's taken an entire year to heal. This has meant a year of my wonderful husband having to carry almost all of the weight of taking care of our little farm. Until I broke my ankle he'd never done anything with our meat rabbits other than go in and pet them on occasion. So, needless to say my biggest fear was that we'd lose them all lol He did good though! With the exception of accidentally letting one of our males get out so we had about 8 unexpected litters, everything went smoothly 🤣. Thank you again for your wonderful videos!! God bless y'all!! 🥰🙏🙏
