June 3 (Bloomberg) --- What if if a table or a bridge could build itself? If researchers at the self-assembly lab at MIT have their way, parts will someday put themselves together. Skylar Tibbits shows Bloomberg what a self-assembling future could look like. (Source: Bloomberg)

Perhaps in the future entire cities can be "unpacked" Imagine a colony ship landing on a new planet and the ship unloads hundreds of cube objects and they begin to unpack and assemble into habitats. Within a few weeks or months you have a fully formed city capable of sustaining thousands of people.

Ok let's not get carried away there. The guys have made a tiny tube that folds into simple shapes. Whatever mass is going to exist inside of that city will have to be brought with you into space so the bigger your city is, the more rocket launches you'll need to complete and the heavier your buildings are, the more fuel you'll need to burn to get it into space. So for now, inflatable habitats are definitely the best bet.

I'm guessing these materials use different elements that stretch or shrink at different rates depending on the temperature. Perhaps something which changes as temperature changes would be more useful then construction parts. An example of something that changes with temperature is the amount of cooling needed on machines. Perhaps excessive heat from a machine could open vents until the machine is cooled. Imagine a house with material along the ground that will surround the home if temperatures get too hot. This could be useful in large scale fires. The hotter the fire, the stronger the material would form around the home.

Why not just leave it as a shoe, I could see this being more useful as like a way to tie up Christmas lights or a self folding tent but I'm not going to want a pair of pocket shoes, or a sea monkey for a plane.
